THE COELACANTH Daubed "the living fossil" because of its relative lack of evolution over 400 million years, scientists are desperately now trying to back-pedal. A creature with such lack of diversity and evolution over 400 million years deals a body blow to the Theory of Evolution. (I await some halfwit to try to explain, with their infant school biology skills.) https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/nathist.museum/images/coelacanth.jpg 2 Likes

Exactly. Because an organism seems not to be evolving. That means evolution is invalid. Henceforth I renounce evolution. I think spirits created diversity. That's a more reasonable explanation. 3 Likes |

Enough of the red herrings! It is the coelacanth we are talking about. Explain how a process of RANDOM MUTATIONS can slow down to a trickle or stop for 400 million years. |

Longstride: As I have often mentioned, what you are really saying is that your belief in the Theory of Evolution is no more than refuge from your belief in god. You see the irony? You believe in "god". That is why you and Dapo are mentioning "god" instead of facing the question. |
Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by Longstride: 12:37pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
sinequanon: even if I tell you that there was no unfavorable condition for it to be better adapted to, hence natural selection trickled down, you'll say I'm halfwit with infant biology skills..so let me not go there. let's agree that evolution cannot explain that yet, that makes evolution wrong ..right? Wait, I've got an idea ...it was created in twenty four hours along side all the diversity of animals... That's a better theory 5 Likes |

sinequanon: if I wanted to go deeper ...I'd have given you this. https://ecologicablog./2013/08/24/coelacanths-are-not-living-fossils/
you seem to have a terrible misconception. Evolution has nothing to do with my disbelief in gods I did not believe in god long before I learnt of evolution. If the theory of evolution crumbles to pieces ..the god belief will still be irrational. An atheist is not necessarily an evolutionist. I have friends that have little or no knowledge of science ...they still don't believe in god. You think that the theory of evolution is a "refuge" for atheists and if it crumbles, they will run to church That's very illogical. 6 Likes |

Longstride: Longstride: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/bies.201200145/full They do not live in an environment that suggests unusual pressure to improve molecular mechanisms, such as DNA replication and repair, resulting in a very low mutation rate This doesn't "go deeper". It refutes your explanation, point blank. Well done, starting with a lie. EDIT: On second reading, their double negative may be a form of what you were saying. It is rubbish. Mutation rates are random and not a response to selective pressure. The idea that an environment could select for high mutation rates, when most mutations are deleterious, is a pathetic excuse. Longstride: Most will. Their propensity for swallowing and regurgitating even the weakest explanations in Theory of Evolution is evidence that it is acting as a refuge. The article you quoted shamelessly tries the "blame the journalist" strategy... That’s how the story goes at least, and ever since it’s discovery journalists have talked about the fish that has been “left behind by evolution”. ...but, if you follow the link, it's not the fault of journalists... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/the-living-fossil-coelacanth-fish-left-behind-by-evolution-8577129.html It is one of the few species to have hardly changed in tens of millions of years and now scientists believe this physical stability is mirrored in the coelacanth’s genome – the 3 billion “letters” of its DNA code. The article also cites research "claiming slow molecular evolution in these species" -- so enough of the blame the journalists argument. They pick and choose when to hide behind journalists. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23382020 Bioessays. 2013 Apr A "series of recent studies" can't be blamed on journalists. The research cited by your article gives little evidence for normal rate of molecular or morphological evolution. It mainly criticizes the research that concludes slow evolution, and it does it very badly. For example, it says... No fossil is available either for extant coelacanth species or for the genus Latimeria itself 3. This suggests that palaeontologists – even those that are convinced that coelacanths are ‘living fossils’ – have considered morphological differences between extant and fossil coelacanths to be so extensive that they should be grouped in separate genera This is senseless. They'd just said there were no fossils available! The rate of molecular evolution in a lineage, the substitution rate, depends on the mutation rate and the rate of fixation of new variants, which itself depends on the selective values of these new variants and genetic drift 6. The mutation rate depends on environmental factors and on replication and repair mechanisms that are under selective pressure. The mutation rate is the result of a trade-off between the need for new variants to adapt to environmental changes and selection for a reduced mutation rate because mutations are more often deleterious than advantageous 15. The substitution rate depends chiefly on fixation of neutral and slightly deleterious mutations 16 and it is thus positively correlated with mutation rate and negatively correlated with population size because selection is more efficient in large populations 17. An unexpectedly low substitution rate could thus be the result of a peculiarly low mutation rate and/or an especially strong selection against deleterious mutations 16, 17. Here, they are not disputing reduced morphological and molecular differences, but are trying to explain them away as 'not necessarily' due to reduced mutation rate. This is a fallacy. The whole point is that the mutations are random. Their explanation does not say why beneficial mutations should be any less for coelacanths. 1 Like |

They do not live in an environment that suggests unusual pressure to improve molecular mechanisms, such as DNA replication and repair, resulting in a very low mutation rate sinequanon says the two quotes above contradict eachother. Yada yada yada ........This is a fallacy. The whole point is that the mutations are random. Their explanation does not say why beneficial mutations should be any less for coelacanths. okay you're right, evolution is wrong. What does this prove? |

Even if evolution fails to explain sexes and sexual reproduction, and some fish filling that gap with some spirits or GOD is nothing but intellectual laziness. That's what science is all about. It's all about finding answers Sinequanon I am not sure you know that,So I am restating it. Science doesn't claim to answer all questions,it's good if loopholes are found in scientific theories they would help us improve our scientific knowledge, Sinequanon is doing a great job in exposing scientific loopholes, that would enable scientists to work on their theories, but what Sinequanon thinks is that he is damaging science while in fact he is of great help in improving science by identifying faults.keep up the good work man. That's the beauty of science. A Yoruba adage says that a tick thinks it's killing the dog while it's actually killing itself. 3 Likes |
Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by Longstride: 3:48pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
sinequanon: LOL Funny guy
you seem to not understand the concept of natural selection. You need unfavorable conditions for natural selection. For example: Mama sinequanon gives birth to twenty sinequanons. Out of those twenty sinequanons, due to RANDOM MUTATION, 2 have thick fur, 16 have normal fur and 2 have light fur... If the climate of that region begins to get cold, and only the 2 with thick covering are able to survive, NATURAL SELECTION has just occurred and only the fittest survived the UNFAVORABLE CONDITION. UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR RANDOM MUTATION TO TAKE PLACE. BUT NATURAL SELECTION, OCCURS IN UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS, AS I HAVE SHOWN.
Evolution is wrong, okay, I agree... So what is right? 3 Likes |

Longstride: It helps to demonstrate that most followers of the theory are RELIGIOUS. Their belief in the HYPOTHESIS as being proven is based on FAITH. This accounts for most atheists. |

Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by sinequanon: 3:58pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
Longstride: Can't your read? You don't need "unfavorable conditions" for RANDOM mutations. You are confusing natural selection and mutation. If you have mutations and no natural selection, then you would end up with the BIGGEST DIVERSITY of individuals, because natural selection is not culling the "weaker" ones. Instead, we have the opposite with the coelacanth. Now, take your kindergarten explanation of evolution back to the drawing board and try to think it through. |
Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by sinequanon: 4:02pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
Longstride: Why are you preoccupied with deities? Next you'll be asking me "does that mean Germany will retain the World Cup?" Neither appears in the OP. What I have been interested in is why people DENY they have faith in science and follow it in a religious way. |

sinequanon: They do not live in an environment that suggests unusual pressure to improve molecular mechanisms, such as DNA replication and repair, resulting in a very low mutation rate. That's why they seem to have changed only slightly. and by the way, the evolution theory has not been able to explain everything..that's why it's said to have gaps. LOL! They should be telling us what is UNUSUAL, not what is "not unusual". We want to know what SPECIAL things the coelacanth is doing differently from almost every other species, lol! You can just see from the spin and double negatives that they are trying to be clever and obfuscate the argument. Longstride: What you are called obsession is known as "critical thinking". Try it, you may like it. It may even |
Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by Nobody: 4:42pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
I am wondering why the Op is not diverting his critical thinking into creating a theory superior to evolution. Sincerely Op why are you wasting your talent on talking about a useless theory as evolution, why don't you divert your critical thinking into creating a superior theory, So that we can live a more better life than we are living now. That's what a reasonable person should do. Sincerely if Sinequanon doesn't create a better theory than evolution, then he has failed humanity for wasting his talent. Who knows maybe it's ur theory that would lead to the cure of HIV and cancer, and other diseases yet to be cured. Please for the sake of humanity bring up a better theory, if you bury your knowledge, it's as good as not knowing anything in the first place. Sincerely I will celebrate with you if you find a theory superior to evolution. 4 Likes |

Re: Body Blow For The Theory Of Evolution by sinequanon: 5:36pm On Dec 17, 2014 |
Longstride: Critical thinking is applicable in many fields. For example, when longstride reads the following, trips and falls into the coelacanth net, that is not critical thinking... They do not live in an environment that suggests unusual pressure to improve molecular mechanisms, such as DNA replication and repair, resulting in a very low mutation rate. Critical thinking helps you to read through BS. They are saying that 'nothing unusual' is the reason for an unusually low mutation rate. They have slipped in a couple of negatives and fooled you. It is a link from your own article. Longstride: I have my line of work. You can join Dapo, who prefers to spend his 'productive' life asking rhetorical questions for "effect", stashing his hard drive with cartoons and remaining duped. |
