I agree with you and this is what I keep saying, how can I ship a car of N5M and I dont have money to clear it, what rubish

Things happen to people all the time.
One can ship a car expecting to pay for it timely and then run out of funds. It happens all the time.

Ok customs can seize it. Does it give them the authority to auction it to themselves ??
Make the auction transparent. Government is loosing billions through this secret auctions designed to enrich custom officers and their friends.

Why can we demand that all government auction be transparent??
Say no to corruption

I dunno if you had shipped a container B4, the rules are very clear,if you pass ur free time it goes on Auction. The reason being the fees must have reached a stage whereby its not worth clearing.

The rules are clear on what

As I speak I have a container in Tin can. It has been there since Dec 4. The rules are not clear nothing. As any clearing agent. Customs keep changing the goal post to collect money from Nigerians.

Ask anybody. This process is the most corrupt process in Nigeria. Worse than police

Im saying for these to happen it must be a fault of the shipper. If you dont give avenue for these wolves they wont eat you/.

Why must our government agencies be wolves eating poor Nigerians.
Am not against customs seizing his container, but the process of auction is my problem.
Make it a transparent process for all. Government will earn more money in the process.

Well I agree with you on that ground,Me I stopped selling cars a year ago, I find it exhausting and holds down ur capital.I trade with china these days, less stress and U get to put anything in ur container. However I try to be on the side of the law so I dont have to beg anybody or see anybody at the port, that way Im in charge at all time.As a principle, I always have the clearing fees min 2M before I ship,if I cant raise it I dont ship.I dont want to fall prey to those wolves.

First thing first, before shipping any consignment, one should ensure that the fund for clearing it is available.

People do this all the time. They ship goods and have no concrete contingent plan to clear the goods. In some cases where the containers are consolidated, some will not come up with their clearance fund thereby incurring demurrage on goods that otherwise should have been cleared in a few days.

The people that are highly connected and profit from the stupidity of such importers usually pray for such amateurs to ship their goods.

You my friend is not far from the truth, as a shipper if you cant afford your own container, check the background of those you are shipping with or be sure your Agent can clear the whole container by themselves and you go to his warehouse to pick up ur goods.

How can ssomeone ship N33m worth of goods and not have funds available to clear them?
The goods shouldn't have left Europe if he wasn't sure of the clearance. He played himself.

Nigeria may be corrupt but one does not have tocreate an easy avenue for the profiteers. And that is exactly what he did.

Truth is, in as much as the NCS may be corrupt, you can't wholly absolve the importer of any blame. Some people just bring in goods for bringing in sake without any knowledge of the rudiments to import trade. Seaports are not airports, containers are not parcels.
It's advisable to budget at least 10 - 30% of the CIF value of the goods for clearance. Many importers fail to budget for this and they run into dire problems with excess demurrage trying to raise funds for clearance. more planning ought to be done as regards landing costs prior to import.

It is a jungle out there and you have to follow up with whatever goods you are shipping till it gets to your warehouse. Starting from the activities of some agents who will tell you a different amount to clear your goods just to get you committed to using them, to the officials at the port. Some times you end up paying twice the initial amount. Even the wharf rats who are there to steal your goods at every slightest opportunity. The off-loaders are not different, leave them for a minute and they divert your goods.

That's the mistake a lot of Nigerians living in Europe and America make. They ship all manner of items down to naija, with the hope that they'd have raised the clearing fee before it gets here. When the container or vehicles land and they haven't been able to raise the fees, the containers/vehicles starts to accrue demurrage and sometimes once it stays for 90 days,it becomes govt property and would be sold for peanuts. But the truth is that, this particular container wasn't sold for 250k. 250k is what would be paid to the govt but trust me on this one,the officers involved in this transaction from top to bottom, must have collected real cash. A rough estimate of what the final allotee would pay, would be in the range of around 5m. If you must import anything to Nigeria, make sure you have your clearing fees at hand before it lands. Any other option is what I'd like to call "sorry". The fact is that, there are people who wait for containers and vehicles,to enter overtime and once they get the info, they start working on how to get it out. While you're busy sending letter from one dept to the other, they are busy crediting one account or the other and getting their goods. You can't blame nobody.

This tragedy resulted from a mixture of ignorance on the part of the man and pure wickedness on the part of the ports authority. There could have been mitigating circumstances as well. All of the people here shouting why didn't he have clearing money I don't think you have done business a day in your lives. Sometimes you make plans and financial arrangements and sometimes unforeseen circumstances crop up and either tie up your money or make you go overboard. It's a fact of life.

Also consider that the ports authorities have resident valuers who estimate value prior to bill and prior to auctions. Knowing the true value of the man's goods there is no way on earth they would have sold it for that price unless they were the ones secretly buying it.
