TOPIC: How to Analyze a Poem.

Today's topic is divided into two facets and one will be discussed tonight.

We solemnly and humbly welcome everyone (students and observers) to our class.

To begin, what does analysing a poem mean?

Analyzing a poem means revealing the "essential" meaning of the poem, the message of the poet or what the poem itself conveys and constitutes. Poets do not just write, they write because they have something to say, thoughts to express, feelings and emotions to fill the blank sheets of papers. However, they do not only write their thoughts and feelings, they select words to do so. Those words are what spur the ordinary words from the dead of white paper into life, that we begin to see them, have mental pictures of them. We begin to feel the mood and tone that it can change mood as well or notion about a particular subject.

Poetry is a string of 'carefully selected' words which distincts it out from all other genres of literature. Those use of words are powerful enough that some people find it difficult to understand. Meanwhile, with practice and passion every work of a poet becomes a piece of cake to devour and a loose thread to unravel. You begin to read poems and absorb the aesthetic pleasure of the different ideas and images that the words evoke. The pleasure derived from deciphering a poem is enormous to a keen lover of poetry.

Now the question is how do we achieve this skill?

UNDERSTANDING THE LITERARY MEANINGS OF POEMS AND THEMES :

Hello class! Nice to meet you all.

So we will be discussing how to use literary terms to understand poems . I will also explain how themes serve thier purpose in analysing a poem.

Poetry is a compact language that expresses complex emotions. Before poems multiple meanings can be understood, the poem being read must be closely examined , from the words and phrasing, to its sounds, images, and implied meanings.

One way to make this easy is to know the literary devices used to understand the poems. I shall list some of these literary devices and also provide a few examples for better understanding.

Analysing a poem has to do with taking all its characteristics into consideration. Everything, from tone, the title, diction , to structure , language, imagery and others must be properly attended to......please take note of this.

LITERARY TERMS USED IN POEM ANALYSIS:

ALLITERATION : This is the repetition of initial consonant sounds ...mostly used to make a sort of pattern.

ALLUSION: A direct or indirect reference to a family figure, place, or event from history.

APOSTROPHE : A figure of speech in which a person not present is adressed.

ASSONANCE : A close repetition of similar vowel sounds , usually in stressed syllables .

ATMOSPHERE/MOOD : The prevailing feeling that is created in a story or poem.

CACOPHONY: Harsh sounds introduced for poetic effect.

CLICHE : An overused expression that has lost its intended force or novelty.

TONE: A poems tone is the attitude that it's style implies. The tone in a poem of praise is approval. In a satire you may feel irony. So tones can be humorous, happy , regretful .........and it can change the poem goes along.

First step to analysing a poem is READ.

Read the poem all the way through at least twice. Read it aloud. Listen to it. Poetry is related to music, so the sound is important. You listen to your favorite song many times; the principle is the same. It takes time to fully understand and appreciate a work of art. Make a note of your first impressions or immediate responses, both positive and negative. You may change your mind about the poem later, but the first ideas are worth recording.

Okay class , time is almost up, but I would like to say that there are many other literary devices than the ones I've listed......and my assignment to you all is to research and find these others. List four more literary devices that I haven't mentioned and use one of them in a poem of not more than five lines. I will definitely explain with examples in my next class, but for now, I must say it's been a pleasure teaching you all smiley
