^^^ I would like to know how many table size fish those could handle . . . . Also, the guard was done by a welder?

I think anything above 150 "table size" fishes is too much.

...Plus the iron guard comes with the tank... you buy it that way.

cheers bros.

MARKETING YOUR CATFISH
At the fourth month my fish had attained an average of 1kg and 0.9 kg.. I was so fufilled because of the size and weight of the fishes.. I started contacting buyers and eatries and joints some adviced to sell at that time but I had a time of 5month.. Now, some farmers wait till harvest before they contact buyers and this is wrong because when the time of harvest has elapsed they keep feeding the fish and some may have depleted their money to feed the fished thereby allowing the fish to loose weight..

Some fish buyers " iya eleja" are gold diggers.. They are very smart people that what to reap where they did not sow.. Most fish farmers have fallen prey to there heinous act..

I have had some bad experince with these exploiters.. Years back when they come to buy some of them bring charms (JUJU) along with them.. It sounds rediculous but that's some hidden truth..
To be continued

I also attest to this, a man also narrated his ordeal with them and decided to start processing the fishes using local oven, which he will then market at a convenient time, I was really impressed with his method

robonski15:
Now if you don't feed your fish regularly they will not grow .. And u should know the size of feed you give to them at the right time.. Feeding should be three times a day but at the third month feed them twice a day while ate the last month u full feed once a day..

At the third month farmers tend to switch to local feed and they sort for a good local feed... Back then I used local feed, I had a good combination but I found out that most of the ingredient are adultarated, especially the fish meal.. And fish meal is the main ingredient to produce a good feed and for rapid growth.. Some farmers include blood meal but I bet that majority of the so called blood meal are not they are sometimes burnt tyre.. I know right now u may be wandering but yes that's the truth..Pardon me to use broken english abeg "dis my leg don waka because of this feed formulation wetin I see na only God know" Am not saying there aint no good ingredient out there but most of them are fake, and u feed your fish and realise that they don't grow as expected..

So I stopped using local feed and
I deviced a method that after three month I switch to VITAL feed.. If u compare the cost of vital feed and the local feed we spend time and energy on its not that big.. And truthfully vital feed is not an imported feed it is made here in nigeria so to me vital feed is also a local feed.. Some farmers may say we do local feed to reduce cost and I laugh at their ignorance.. It is better to go straight to the point than cutting corners and whereby you may still be cheated on the local feed.. When u have a good fish its better you feed them with quality to harvest quality..

CHANGE YOUR WATER
I have been to farms where the water is so polluted and stinks.. I wonder how such farmers reason.. Its just like putting 20 people in a single room and u shut the door and window what do u think will happen over time..

If u don't change the water as at when due the enviroment of the fishes will be too polluted to encourage good feeding.. The fishes urine, faeces and dissolve excess feed pollute the water and they wount eat well or digest the food because of polluted enviroment..

Do you need to drain water in dug earthen pond? What is the importance of pond fertilization? Is it a must that the water in pond become green? I learnt a farm rear pigs to feed cat fish

The answer is yes.

The guy who introduced me into fish in herited his father's 6 rooms "face me I face you" house. He started by setting tiny ponds around the fence, graduated to creating pond at the only available space at the back yard. In January this year he evicted a tenant and converted the room to a pond (about 10 ft by 10ft). In July he evicted another tenant and constructed another pond in the room space. In September he evicted the 3rd tenant and did broilers. He occupies 2 rooms and have a tenant. Do you the that tenant will survive next year in that house?

His reasons:

His tenants pay N2,000 a month and its not regular
2000 *12 = 24,000.

He stocks 1000 table size and sells at about 2kg within 6 months makes about 150,000
150,000 * 2 cycles =N300,000.

According to him he makes about N300,000 for the same space.

I hope that answers your inquiry.

Warning: this is a live scenerio but I won't encourage you to evict your tenants for fish oo.

Merry Christmas all

Dis must be a serious joke, an empty room as fish pond? You are calling for tsunami, serious leakage will arise from room to room

FISH FARMING WITHOUT TEARS

-Liaise with other farmers and try to get as many contacts as possible of fish buyers before harvest time.

-Different fish buyers have different sizes of fish they buy. Get the contacts of buyers for all the sizes.

-Do not drain water completely in your fish pond before negotiation with ur buyers.

-Be friendly with your fish buyers but at the same time strict. It's a business you are running and not a charitable organisation.

- Even if you are desperate to sell off your fishes, pretend you are not desperate to sell. Your body language tells a lot, so comport yourself in the presence of your buyers.

- Always have some fish feed on stand-by (enough feed to feed your fishes for a week) during harvest because your buyers might disappoint you and you will need to keep feeding your fishes till you get another serious buyer.

-Do not be intimidated by the prices the buyers are offering... Its your fish and if you decide you don't want to sell at the price the buyers offer, they won't kill you.

-About a week to sales, decide on the prices of your fishes and stick at that price during negotiations.

-As a guide, do not sell fishes above 1kg for less than N500 per kilo (prices can fluctuate but try not to go below this).

-Always use your own weighing scale when selling. The fish buyer can confirm with their own scale if they want.

-Do not sell on credit, but partial credit can be given to long time customer who has a guaranteed reputation with you and you know the person's shop or market stall.

-Your eyes must be on the weighing scale at all times; you cannot be the one packing the fish from the pond and at the dame time watching and recording the weight on scale.

-Get at least one other person to assist you during sales. Do not ever be alone when making sales in large quantity. The fish buyers have a natural tendency to cheat.

-If your sales are going to run into hundreds of thousands of naira, encourage payment into your account rather than deal with cash... It would be sad if the senior ogas of the night come and take their share.
It means that you should have an idea of your expected harvest in kg & price range.

-Even if you don't sell hundreds of thousands, try not to be in the habit keeping large sums of money in the house after sales.

Happy sales my people and a very wonderful New Year. - - BELEXY

Happy new year to all. Here is a picture i took in 2009 when i began my journey as a fish farmer. I had three wooden vat which was constructed by our very own Micky fish, and surprisingly the vats are still being used today but converted to a spawning vat.

For those of us that just ventured into fish farming always remember that from small beginnings come great thing. Risk more than what people think is safe and dream more than others think is practical.

cheers

[size=15pt]High Guys, starded following this thread and its quite interesting. I really want to go into fish farming and i need first hand training. I want to visit the songhai farms in benin just to learn fish farming, feed processing and hatchery. These are my areas of interest.

OBJECTIVES
1, to be able to hatch the fish myself
2, to raise the feed in my pond
3, to produce feed for fish and other animals
4, learn and apply various smoking techniques

QUESTIONS FOR THE HOUSE.

Has anyone attended training in fish farming in Songhai farms, if yes whats the fee like and the experience.

Can i acquire enough knowledge to start mine in 2 months

How much will i spend on food and water to raise 2000 fishes to market size . assuming i am not close to running water.

or dt u have been on honeymoon since cos d disappearance started shortly after you got married.

Anyway, i noticed that your earthen ponds have water in and out. how often do u change water in an earthen pond? Can one use borehole as source of water for earthen pond?

My friend is moving into his house. It is a very big plot and he intends to start his fish pond latest by feb. How wil he solve the challenge of drainage for the pond? The land is sloped inward- to the inside. The area has no drainage constructed and cos of the sloppy terain, he is scared dt water may spoilt ppl's property if he sends it outside.

Kindly assist with solution.
