The leadership of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) has
dismissed the on-going controversy
dogging its presidential candidate for
the February 14 general election,
General Muhammadu Buhari,
describing it as “contentious of our
military institution”.

Buhari had submitted affidavit
documents instead of photocopies of
his academic certificates, claiming
that the originals are with the Army
authorities.

A weekly newspaper (name withheld)
yesterday published a story where
the military authorities claimed
ignorance of the location of the
certificates in question.

But if what APC spokesman, Lai
Mohammed, told LEADERSHIP Sunday
last night is anything to go by, there
is nothing to be worried about on the
matter, since Buhari had been using
court affidavit papers to contest
previous presidential polls in 2003,
2007 and 2011.

The full text of his reaction reads as
follows, “What precisely is the
controversy all about? Is anyone
insinuating that General Muhammadu
Buhari has not the requisite
academic qualifications to stand as
the presidential candidate of the
APC?” Mohammed said, adding that
“the facts on the issue of General
Buhari are as follows; that General
Muhammadu Buhari was in detention
for over three years; that while in
detention, captors raided his
residence and vandalised his
property including certificates and
diplomas; and that consequently,
after his release, whenever the
General asked about his academic
qualifications, he would refer such
bodies to the Military Command, who
has his service records including his
academic certificates.”

Continuing further, he said, “this was
the case in 2003, 2007 and 2011,
when General Buhari contested for
President under the platform of the
defunct ANPP and CPC and INEC was
quite satisfied with the procedure.”
According to Lai Mohammed, “this
year, General Buhari adopted the
same approach by swearing to an
affidavit that all his certificates had
been lost while he was in detention
and that the Army Command has his
service records, including records of
his academic qualifications”, and that
“INEC to the best of our knowledge
has not expressed dissatisfaction
with the situation, as this was exactly
the approach in years 2003, 2007
and 2011 when General Buhari
contested for President.”

The APC spokesperson further
queried, “Why is anyone trying to
question General Buhari’s
qualifications” saying it “is
contentious of our military institution.
Is the person saying a man who rose
to become a General in the Nigerian
Army does not have the equivalent of
a secondary school?”

LEADERSHIP Sunday recalls that
similar situation arose in 1979 when
some presidential candidates could
not present their three-year tax
clearance certificates, but after the
initial hues and cries, the then
electoral commission, Federal
Electoral Commission, gave them a
waiver which doused the tension in
the land.

I've been opportuned to do an affidavit for a missing document.

In the affidavit, you state in details that you got the document, and the date and contents... you state what happened to the document.

With the affidavit and maybe police report, you can request for copies of the document signed by the issuing body or a letter of introduction stating your qualification.

The military has stated that copies of documents it has are readily provided to personnel at request. Following stated down procedures.

Why can't Mr. "Change" stop arrogantly referring inec to "the secretary of military board" and follow the procedures to get the copies of his documents and an affidavit to show that the originals are missing. Which is what I believe the VP did and submit same to inec.

The constitution requires a minimum of WAEC....I believe just submitting your WAEC cert qualifies you.



My take:

I believe the problem GMB has is that his WAEC result was woeful, and if he shows it, questions will arise on how he used it to advance. Which will kill all the integrity being preached by APC.

Think about this: only a person sure of his credentials will refer you his alma mater to get the credentials..... a person who wants to forge or has forged will rather tender the certificates himself......

This was exactly what I told a friend. I insisted that the army led by IBB had tampered with the properties of muhammadu buhari after the IBB-led coup that toppled his government. There is no controversy here, whoever that is not satisfied should petition the army or go to court. Simple

Well thank God, the Army is also a public institutions...... and it practically sponsored most of GMB's education..
....so INEC can easily write the Army to confirm. And the army itself without being asked can also do the needful to absolve one of its own, a General and former head of state for that matter.

Ordinarily, in this kind of matter, the army would only be too eager to clear the air, buy it's obvious they've been compromised because they want to please the ruling party.


Also a very important question posed by Lai Mohammed: Instead of people just making so much noise that amounts to much-ado-about-nothing, why not just state what exactly is in contention here? IS THAT GENERAL BUHARI DOES NOT HAVE THEE NECESSARY ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION TO CONTEST FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF NIGERIA?!!

But no one will come out and say that because they know they will just sound ridiculous and stupid.

So he used his affidavit on three different occasions and was endorsed by INEC. Why is it that there is no one persecuting INEC about this? If really the original must be submitted, why did they endorse him before and now they are screaming 'bring your result'? Mtcheeew! there is no truth is this country at all. I hv sworn an affidavit. Most of us have.
In mine, I stated my school,d year I passed out and even my principal then.

Let him do that. It's very simple.
Then they can take it to d ministry of education for varification.

This is what I hv been saying about d north.
They r everywhere with quota.

When I served in records nepa abuja, I saw nwii.
These guys don't go to school.
We even beg them(old folks) to go and register for gce and pay somebody to write for them.
