EverestdeBliu:
Still another way to write acrostic poems is to use vertical words instead of letters, like this: Take a proverb or saying and put each word on a separate line. For example use the phrase: "Have a nice day” as your vertical words and then write your poem:

Have fun with a walk in the woods,
A light breeze whispering in your ears.
Nice thoughts dancing behind your eyes.
Day after day will write poems on your heart.

Again, you have a simple poem about ways in which you can “have a nice day.” As with acrostics that use letters, you can also write more complicated word acrostics, using ending words or middle words for your poem. Or you can use two or more combinations of vertical words.

wow..thats gud

So far, we've talked about sound effects, and visual effects. Others have talked about structural effects. Another important part of creating a poem is deciding on its content, or what the poem is actually saying. In the our next class we'll look at how writing a poem can, in many ways, be similar to writing a story.

.

Challenge:
1) Try writing some more difficult acrostic poems.

2) The Minute Poem -also called Traditional Minute poem is rhyming verse form consisting of 12 lines of 60 syllables written in strict iambic meter. The poem is formatted into 3 stanzas of 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4 syllables. The rhyme scheme is as follows: aabb, ccdd, eeff.

3) or choose a prompt and write a poem using any of the lessons you've learned so far from any teacher. Be sure to tag that teacher and any others you would like to review it.

texanomaly:
Other ways poems can make use of visual elements are by using fancy lettering, like calligraphy, or by including pictures on the page with the poem. Sometimes, the illustration enhances the meaning of the poem. One modern poet, Shel Silverstein, included illustrations with almost all of his poems. Sometimes, the poem itself could be vague or difficult to understand without looking at the picture that goes along with it. With some poems, however, the illustrations may just be ornamental.
Good, you guys are so great! Please teach up!

....... GREATNESS........

'Tis not aloofness and contempt
Nor the mind that live for self alone;
'Tis not the vanity of power
Nor the giant use of might;
'Tis not the cloak of worldly gain
Nor the gleam of gold and precious stones.
'Tis simple faith in the goodness of Right,
'Tis the humble thoughts of a balanced mind,
'Tis the heart to do the greatest good,
To help the poor and fight for the weak;
Tis the painful patience to forebear
And see the other's better side;
Such is true greatness,such the goal to which the noble heart aspires.

I just realized there are no prompts to choose from on 3.

Here they are:

Poetry Prompt - Write a poem that starts with a one word title, two words in the first line, three in the next, and continues by adding one word per line.

Poetry Prompt - Write a poem that describes a walk through a house from the perspective of a child.

Poetry Prompt - Write a poem concerning the "absence" of something. Consider the absence as a positive, or a negative.

Poetry Prompt - Write a poem that begins with a description of an event, telling what appears to be happening. Then give a description of what is really occurring.
