Lesgupnigeria:

Plantain is not a biennial crop, plantain farm.can last for more than a decade depending on the level of management.

Please read my post from the start to have a good knowledge of everything you need to know on plantain farming.
Okay.
Please clarify something for me here.
How long does it take from planting to harvest?
How many plots make an acre?

For agropreneurs that will be cultivating one crop or the other,i will be showing you the best time to start cultivation of crops ranging from plantain-watermelon- cucumber-tomato-corn etc.later in the day. (For those whose plan is to sell at the market after harvest).
This will help you to beat the flunctuation of price due to flunctuation in supply of agro-products in the market
...Stay tuned.

This is a veteran and an insightful post@Op. Have been following with keen interest cum the comments. Well, I just have few questions to ask.
1. Doesn't plantain require manure because you didn't mention such? If YES to using manure, how often do one apply it (give the range of weeks or months)
2. Should it be planted in a row or scattered form?
3. Please like how much will it cost from procurement, operational cost(s) et'al to harvesting excluding land (Ekiti precisely)?
4. What is the present market price for a dozen of plantain using Lagos and Abuja as a case study. I can be reached via adekanmi_adewumi@yahoo.com. Thanks

Plantain require manure and the best is the poultry manure.
if you use tissue cultured suckers, you have to apply poultry dung 2months after planting for maximum yield.

If you apply a good quantity of manure once, you dont need to apply again.

if you plant them in a scattered form, management of the farm will be difficult from ease of weeding, fertilizing. You will not also be able to determine accurately the numbers of suckers on the land.

Cost of production differs from location to location.i may not be able to give you accurately the cost of production in Ekiti.

In the market, plantain are sold per bunch.
#800-#1000/bunch.

Hi bro, you've been doing a great job

I have a question. How many bunches on the average can one expect to harvest per acre?

If you make use of the tissue cultured hybrid suckers, you can be assured of having 100% survival rate and then 100% harvest.
At least 1000 suckers can plant 1 acre of land.
By the end of 10months,you can have all the 1000 bunches.

Below is the tissue cultured sucker i am talking about.

Just stumbled on this thread. My mum has a plantain farm. 400 suckers was planted on an acre last yr dec. and a well was dug because the land is kindda a dry land. But after a yr,(i.e this month) we found nt up to twenty suckers n the ones we saw didnt grow at all although i dont knw about the watering and weeding process. Wot advice do you have. Thanks
Sorry to say,you might likely need to re-establish the farm,a year old plantain can't be corrected,it might likely not pick up again.
Just clear everything and start it all over with good sucker and irrigation

If you are not using tissue cultured suckers, you may never make profit from your plantain farm.
That may be wrong.

That may be wrong.
If you use the wrong sucker, your farm is prone to disease outbreak.
If you plantain did not fruit at the same time, you will likely make loss.
calculate the transportation cost, the labour cost you will incurred every time you come to harvest plantain probably every 2months and you will see that the costs will overshoot the revenue.
Its advisable to use a tissued suckers for a uniform seedling, fruiting and harvesting

This is the best time to get land if you will be starting or expanding your agricultural business.
Farming business is time sensitive,if you miss it now,you might have to wait for another 1year.

Early land preparation is very important, you need to start now to reach the right market.

Looking for land to establish your farm in any state of the south-west,kindly contact me.
