Bro, I had an on-again, off-again for six years and a half. It was a hard one but I was gonna take it anyway because I loved the hell out of her. Things went south because she was all set and I was still sorting my life out. No blames on her. We had difficulties in our relationship but as far as I was concerned, as long as we shared the same faith and loved each other we'd make it. It ended and I was scared when it did because it wasn't supposed to. I'd already gotten "older" and I had no idea how to do this whole "adult" dating thing everyone did. I dated my "growing-up" friends, people I had a connection with, not fine strangers I didn't know from Adam.

Then I fell for someone and, bro, I could do without the pain. I thought to ignore romance until I'm all set economically. But we all know that it's not easier then. And I found a perfect complement so why postpone? But, ehn, at present, lifelong celibacy is very appealing. I only feel bad because I can already taste the cynicism in the back of my throat.
I get you bruh. I guess I had it delivered on a platter. All hope isn't lost though, He doesn't leave His own without a witness.

Also, cynicism would only reflect poorly on you. Now you know the truth, all you need do is play it to your advantage. wink

carefreewannabe:

The quantity is not the problem, the quality is.

Before I met my boyfriend, I dated and dated and I met a lot of "strange" people who I could not go on a second date with, not to think of having a relationship with. Some were really strange, others were ok but I felt that they were not meant for me. I believe that it SOMETIMES can be very difficult to find the right one. It also depends on the person, of course.
I agree with quantity vs quality, I literally went through quantity before I came to my senses and sealed it with the missus.

I don't get you.

You've found somebody that complements you, and yet you toy with the idea of celibacy because you're afraid of getting hurt?

If not, then where's the cynicism coming from, Ihe?

Timbuktou, yes. The cynicism is not here to stay. It's not even a welcome visitor. It's a nuisance, if anything at all. It's just the result of disappointment. And, yes, I know the truth. I will be alright.

Over the phone..we met through his cousin who was my very good male friend (more like an adopted bro).He was in a different city but we started talking over the phone and just hit it off.We kept saying we should actually see but I can be quite conservative about some things I never offered to travel down even though his schedule was tighter than mine. He decided to hop on the train and came down to London a few weeks after we started talking.

So physically, we met at Walthamstow station grin grin grin Fortunately we were both not disappointed grin. After so many more train rides and plane journeys ( i went back to Nigeria) we got married 3 years later.

I apologize if I'm calling you out a bit, but I have benign intentions.... The question is this, does one need to go through a number of "Miss-shots" /Miss-fires"(relationship - wise) before you settle down to find "the one".

I'm asking this because quite frankly, chronologically I'm at a stage in my life where I should be getting ready to get married next year.... But I don't even have a relationship presently.... I've not had any for almost 6years, and apart from other reasons, I've not just found "the one", I've had several opportunities to randomly date ladies, good looking ones, but I chose not to, because I didn't feel that "She's the one vibe" and I didn't want to start jumping from relationship to relationship

So the question again is.

-Was I wrong by staying away from those random relationships
-Do I have a chance of meeting the one, without having had any relationships in such a long while.

Allow me to answer too.

Every human being has his own individual life story. Some people find their spouses easily and quickly, others need to have patience.

If you want to find someone, be open minded, date as many girls as possible as long as you are single until you feel the vibe but give them a fair chance. Sometimes feelings take time. Sometimes you need to really get to know someone to fall in love.

My contribution. Sorry for interfering without being asked.

My "the one" vibe is the one that ended after six and a half very difficult years.

Not saying "the vibe" doesn't work. Just that mine didn't. But I learned what to look for in a woman and how to find it. That's why I feel like fish on a hook right now. I found it.

I don't know that anyone needs to go through several relationships to find what they need. There are many "first loves" that worked extremely well. I think it is a question of having a clear vision for your life and a readiness to commit to working it out no matter what with someone who buys that vision too.

Oh, one thing I'm definitely completely unafraid of is getting hurt. Being in a difficult relationship hurts. A lot. But that can be handled. Loving someone the way men can love women and ending up without her is a nightmare best imagined than experienced. I'd rather be celibate than risk that even once. And I'm already risking it.

C'mon Ihe.

I'm sure you know in your heart of hearts that you can't go through lift tip-toeing on egg shells. So you had one (or a couple) of bad relationships. So what? Life goes on. Infact sometimes we need to be knocked off our horses so we get stronger and wiser. It's not about feeling sorry for yourself when you hit the ground, but about getting up, dusting yourself and moving on.

Life's too short for regrets. Grab it with both hands while you can.

Erm, I couldn't categorically say one or the other, because the experience is dependent on knowledge. If you know what to look for and how to look for it, you shouldn't have difficulty finding if you get my drift. In my case, I was left to my devices, my mom was too religious to broach the subject, my dad was too busy working to even consider that I could find women attractive and we had no relatives young or old around, I was on my own, so it was really trial and error.

That said, not having a relationship is quite worrisome for someone your age. It need not lead to marriage, in fact, you shouldn't be thinking of marriage too early into a relationship as it could lead to making judgement errors. Get into the relationship and let it develop organically, if it's not working out as envisioned you can always quit and move on. Better to try and fail than not try at all. wink

PS: I'm not sure there's such a thing as "the one", so while fortune might smile on you and hand you a really compatible female on short notice, you still have to go through the rigour of verifying suitability.
