URGENT PLS!!! Toyota Camry 04 Tyre/rim Increase by drcynthia(f): 9:31am On Jan 19, 2015
Hi! gurus in the house!
Pls i drive a toyota camry 2004 LE.
It came with 15" tyre/rim.
I want to increase it to 16" or 17".
My questions are:
Which is better interms of stability of the car or the best option generally.
Cos I heard the car vibrates on some tyres and also affects the shocks.
215/60/16 that's what I have in mind.
Also Pls explain what the figure means. 215/60/16 (height, width etc).
Primary reason of increase is d bad roads, nd that loud sound when passing speed bumps.
I am sorry o! So many questions at d same time.
Guys over to you!

Just to mention a few!
God bless u

What tyre size do you currently have on your car?

Note that weak shocks are also a good reason for your car's nearness to the ground.

Be careful when going for larger tire sizes on the Camry. During tight turns, bigger tires will rub on plastic lining of the inner wheel well and damage it giving your beloved car an unsightly look. Secondly, bigger tires and rims will weigh heavier and will wear down your suspension components faster e.g shocks, ball joints, tie rods and lower arm bushings. With bigger tires and rims, it won't be long before you start hearing the famous "thunk thunk thunk" from your shocks and stabilizers. You can try 16 inch rims with 215/60/16 tires but this won't give you the increase in height you are looking for. 215 stands for the width of the tire in millimeters, sixty is the height from the ground to the lip of the rim and 16 is the rim size in inches. The Camry isn't a beauty so lifting it will make it look worse. Your current tire setting which i believe is 205/65/15 is okay with regards to stability and handling. The loud sound your hear might be your suspension telling you it due for a change. Please also check and make sure your tire pressure is as recommended by the car manufacturer. Over inflated tires can make you hear that loud thumping sound when you go over bumps. Also I hope you do slow down at bumps and at bad road sections too. It's not an SUV you know. If you want a car with a higher ground clearance, you are probably better off with an SUV.

Well said.

I'm still waiting to know if its the factory recommended tyre size she using at the moment, before I can emphatically tell her to replace her shocks not with tokunbo but OEM.

The 04 camry has a good factory reset ground clearance. So, with its suspension components in good condition and the right tyre size, the OP would not experience issues associated with low ride height.

By OEM he means Original Equipment Manufacturer. And before you take any action i would advice you observe whether it is the base of your car that scratches or the "silenser." Those model of camry are notorious for having the silenser low. I believe there is a rubber hanger that holds it up which does wear over time. Have this checked as a starting point. But if you are most certain it is a sound and not scratch then it is most likely ur shock absorbers. My "2 cents."

Tanks so much.
It's d base... D silencer rubbers r intact. I checkd myself at a petrols station pit.
So in conclusion i should change the shocks and not the rims?
But the shocks rnt giving me any signs of being bad.

If possible, a pic of a tyre in its wheel well wld do

If the entrance to your house has a significant slope, then your exhaust in the mid section of the car will most likely scrape on the ground when going in. The camry is a fairly long car so such things happen. there are two ways you can help the situation.
1. Lighten your load before climbing the slope
2. Climb the slope at an angle such that the tires diagonally opposite make contact with the slope almost at the same time.
As for the thump when you are climbing bumps, check your sway bars and its bushing as well.
I think there are 205/70/15 tires you can fit. That can give you some lift.

That's "dangerful" oh.

If she's going the tyre route, Its better she goes with a wider rim and a lower tyre profile like a 205/50/16 to get about one inch or more higher off the ground.

Note that the higher you go, there's an increase in rollover risk of your car while driving.

Your shocks might not be bad but cld be weak thereby allowing ur car sag so low even when it doesn't have much load in it.

Pls drcynthia, If the roads you have to drive on are so bad that you need some more ride height, get yourself an SUV instead of doing something that will compromise your motoring safety and that of other road users.

Cheers.

Yes o! SUV in view IJN.
Currently it's on 205/65/15 rim
Wld increase to 215/60/16 or 215/65/16

Decotech! Tanks o! How was ur day?
Sry u said 205/50/16
Why? Won't it be still low? What about 215/60/16 or 215/65/16
Since u said the "middle" no is the height .
Also 215 is wider than 205 since u said the "first no" is the width....

I had the same issue with my 2009 camry. My tyres were 215/60/16 and I increased to 225/60/16 after much consultation with "my ogas" here which solved my issues. I concure with Decotech and don't subscribe to the increase in tyre height cos it compromises a lot of factors. However if I must gain height I had rather increase the springs instead.....but I had still be careful on this route!

Like ur hubby needs the swag of larger wheels.. Sadly the swag works on the immediate past model and the next model of this car, but wn't look good on this. This car was meant for clergies and doctors like you that wanna be cool like that.

Well spoken guys, if you increase to 17" you will have to get a 1 -1.5" body lift which will cost a bit but will make the car safe to drive. I think you should check your shocks, then get tires that are a bit higher..

Had the same issue when I got my camry.. Seems the Goodyear (though 205/65/15)that came with it is naturally low.. I bought new tires with the same dimension 205/65/15 and the issue was resolved....

My advice, Buy brand new tires with the same dimensions.. It worked for me...

Please, oh!
60 is the percentage the tyre height is of the width. That is to say, for a tyre rated 215/60/16, the width is 215mm, the height from tread to the rim is 60% of 215mm and the rim diameter is 16 inches.
