Arysexy:Sweet roads. One fear about roads without gutter to gutter tarring is that they quickly breakdown after a few rainy seasons due to our soil type that tends to retain water longer. Although gutters on both sides of the road are expensive to install, they have been proven to preserve the roads to last longer and mitigate against soil erosion. |

Crisis looms in Anambra community, as youths allege illegal oil deal By Nwabueze Okonkwo ONITSHA-The ongoing misunderstanding between the youths and stakeholders of Umerike na Umia village of Umolum in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State would have degenerated into a full blown communal crisis, last weekend, but for the quick intervention of Governor Willie Obiano. The youths had embarked on a demonstration against what they described as a grand conspiracy between a priest and a retired headmaster in the area to strike an illegal oil deal with Orient Petroleum Plc without the consent of elders and youths in the area. The youths, numbering up to 100, gathered at Nwoye Junction, from where they embarked on the protest that took them to Shell Road and reserved Oil wells at the Otu Umolum water side in search of Orient Petroleum workers. While the demonstration lasted, the youths accused the Catholic priest and the ex-headmaster (names withheld) of inviting some people believed to be workers of Orient Petroleum to the site earlier in the month for possible oil exploration, without their consent and that of the elders. When the youths could not trace the whereabouts of the oil workers, they also matched to the priest's residence where they demanded to know about the visitors, who they were and the purpose of their visit. Spokesman of the youth group, Comrade Mocha Anierobi, said their demonstration stemmed from the fact that they could no longer trust the priest because of the manner with which he represented the community in previous dealings with other oil companies in the area. He alleged that the N9 million royalty paid by Shell Development Corporation to the villages of Amikwe, Ikenga and Umerike na Umia through the Rev. Father since January 22, 2010, was yet to be released to the villagers or accounted for by the priest till date. He said the youths had cancelled any agreement reached between the priest and Shell, Cetrap, Elf or Orient Petroleum on behalf of the villages, either in part or in full without the consent of the elders and the youths in the area. The protesting youth called on Governor Obiano to urgently wade into the matter and call the priest and his allies to order, to prevent the situation from escalating into communal crises capable of leading to a total breakdown of law and order However, in a reply, priest addressed the protesters in a subtle manner, telling them that the people that came into the area were not workers of Orient Petroleum, adding that they were there to install a power generating plant that will supply electricity to Orient Petroleum Refinery at Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area. He assured that Orient Petroleum workers would still come to do meet the yearnings of the villages at the appropriate time. http://nigeriaworld.com/cgi-bin/axs/ax.pl?http://odili.net/news/source/2015/jan/20/303.html ****** ****** ****** This post raises a number of questions for those of us not kept abreast of happenings in Anambra as regards Orient Petroleum and oil exploration generally! Can anyone help with these questions: * Has Orient Petroleum started exploration, exploitation and exporting/refining of crude oil? * Are Shell, Cetrap and Elf also operating in the state? ![]() * If answers to the above questions are in the afirmative, how come the Senate had problems with Senator Andy Ubahs' proposal to make Anambra a member of the NDDC? * Does Orient Petroleum have a refinery in Nsugbe; as it was stated in the report that a generator was installed at their refinery there? * Have they finished delineating the boundary between Anambra and Kogi that we were told would be concluded by december last year? Thanks! |

IGBOSON1:They are fighting us very hard but one thing they did not realized is that both drilling and exploiting going on more than half of the funds are going straight back to anambra state treasury, this is the same reason why the state government is not announcing the huge reserve gas we have in the river basin which is the one of the biggest in oil producing states. We are not fools the music is on we will dance till the last man drop ![]() |

Anambra targets N2.5bn IGR as FDI rises to $1.7bn 0 BY OUR REPORTER ON JANUARY 21, 2015 BUSINESS Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has said his administration attracted a whopping $1.7 billion worth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over the last seven months, following new set of incentives that have turned the zone into an investment destination of choice. A breakdown of the inflow, according to the governor, shows that agricultural projects accounted for $560 million, industry, trade and commerce drew about $400 million while oil/gas and hospitality industries accounted for $320 million and $38 million respectively. Speaking shortly before the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the management of Richbon Group Limited at the governor’s lodge in Awka, Obiano said the huge inflow was attributable to some of the innovative policies of his government designed to improve the business climate and escalate its development aspirations in the face of dwindling oil revenue of the Federal Government. He assured that the state was working towards doubling the amount over the next few months. The governor urged well-meaning individuals to come over to the state and utilise the many incentives available for investors to boost employment generation for Nigerians. He further assured that as soon as the various projects, which, he said, are in line with the state’s four-point development agenda fully come on stream, its internally generated revenue will grow to over N2.5 billion monthly from the current N1 billion income, while thousands of jobs would be created for the citizens. According to him, the state stands to gain in several ways including its holding of 10 per cent equity, 2 per cent equity for the host communities in addition to enhancing IGR generation and creating employment and economic empowerment to the citizens of the state. Meanwhile, as part of measures to improve the state’s investment climate, Obiano said his government has already signed an MoU with Orient Petrochemicals Industries and Falcon Power for 85MW power project and gas supply to the new industrial projects to ensure steady power supply to the projects. Also speaking, Chairman and Chief Executive of Richbon Group, Chief CJ Muonagolu, said he was delighted to see that Anambra has become the first state in the country to host indigenous construction equipment industry. He promised that his company would also invest in agriculture and other sectors that would facilitate the state’s economic development. Muonagolu said products from the factory would rank among the best in the world given the track record of its technical partners, XGMA of China which is rated third in the world. He said the firm would be producing heavy duty equipment for agriculture, commercial buses and light trucks. The Richbon boss also commended the management of the Anambra State Investment Promotion Agency for the role it has played in making the project a reality. |

Though I'm not fully on ground - in Anambra, but the little I could gather from my visit to my home state last Christmas is a testament that Obiano is really working hard to make Anambra state a better place. I believe if we give the governor the needed support he will succeed. I think the lack of support shown by Nigerians to her leaders is the bane of poor leadership. And it is my wish that my brothers and sisters in Anambra state will learn to appreciate her leaders. However, I will plead with the state govt to give priority attention to water issue in the state and also make every effort to depopulate Onitsha. If Obiano can achieve 70% of his master plan, no doubt Anambra will be the toast of Africa. |
