More Road Projects Awarded in The Great City of ONITSHA=>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Governor Willie Obiano has declared the resolve of his administration to restore the lost glory of Onitsha and transform it into one of the major cities in Nigeria and the entire Sub-Saharan Africa. The governor made this declaration during the flag off of some inner city road projects in Onitsha.
The roads are Ajasa, Allen, Ezenwaand Saineez streets. The projects were awarded to the Army Corps of Engineers at the contract sum of N1.1 billion with a completion period of three months. A breakdown of this cost shows that Ajasa and Allen streets were awarded at the cost of six hundred million naira while Ezenwa and Saineez Streets were awarded at the cost of N500 million.
The governor expressed confidence that the Army Corps of Engineers would deliver a quality work and assured that streetlights and other road infrastructure would be installed on the roads while the reconstruction work would be extended to other roads in the vicinity. He therefore urged the residents of the area to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse inside drainages and other acts that could threaten the lifespan of the roads.
In his own remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Sir Callistus Ilozumba said the state government had embarked on massive upgrading of infrastructure in Onitsha and environs and further noted that 90% of roads in the city were constructed by APGA government. Sir Ilozumba enjoined the people to give the contractor the necessary support to enable it deliver the roads on schedule.
Responding, the Commander, Engineering Corps of the Nigerian Army, Major General John Davies said they had enjoyed the privilege of working for Anambra State Government having just completed the internal roads at the Army Barracks, Onitsha.
Major General Davies urged the people to give Governor Obiano total support as he had good intentions and a commitment to uplift the state. He assured that they would deliver quality work while looking forward to greater partnership with the state government.
Also speaking at the event, the Director General of APGA Campaign Organization, Senator AlphonsusIgbeke implored the people to support Governor Obiano’s commitment to good governance by voting massively for APGA candidates in the coming elections.

Even my old woman calls me onye Omenani. Well,it a shame that a modern Igbo isn't proud to speak their language and sometimes feel ashamed unlike the Chinese,Mexicans,Ethiopians and the Arabs but I swear the first language my children will speak is Igbo and speak it very fluently in core Umuoji lect. My children must be raised in my deep culture;I will instill it in them right from the very day they are born. When I was in Naija I went to see my elder sister and her kids were speaking English and I felt irritated and disappointed. I see people who aren't proud of their culture as inferior...I look down and talk down on such people, especially the Igbo ones. My bloodline will rule over them and enslave their foolish mind!

Its easier said than done. It depends mainly on the environment your kids grow up at. If they are in a place where they cant find igbo speakers, in the schools, churches or playgroups, you are daydreaming, unless you have no work and will be around them most of the time. Talking from experience..

Awka — EFFORTS by Dr. Willie Obiano to advance status of the health sector in Anambra State is yielding fruits following the revelation that government is set to initiate exchange program for high level manpower with United Kingdom.

The State Commissioner for health, Dr Joe Akabuike made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in his office, Awka yesterday after a marathon meeting of all heads of general hospitals across the state aimed at revamping the hospitals.

Dr Akabuike explained that the health sector remains topmost priority on Governor Obiano's development policy aimed at realizing the Millennium Development Goods (MDG), adding, "We are here to address problems of all General hospitals... with the hope of making them function maximally and delivering the expected results.

"The problems of our hospitals vary, when we have visited all the health institutions, we then address such specific problems. I know we need more doctors, nurses etc. to make the healthcare delivery system work very well", adding that whatever remains would be looked into.

He explained that Anambra hospitals are not for profit making, but humanitarian purpose, arguing that the hospital management should generate some funds to ensure they function regularly.

The commissioner praised Governor Obiano for signing the Anambra Primary Healthcare Development Agency bill into law, which he said has made it possible to establish the Board that brings the management of all PHC centers under one roof, adding that, "There is training and retraining, plans to encourage exchange training program with United Kingdom and continuous medical education programs.

"Government has concluded arrangement for special incentives for hospital staff posted to riverrine communities, welfare for the housemasters, midwives among others", as he observed that the number of hospital staff presently especially doctors are not enough and some have retired.

Also speaking to the Guardian, the hospitals Administrator, Dr. Emmanuel A, Akpati said the hospital management board has intensified activities to ensure that every staff not only attends to duty but remains in his or her duty post.

He pointed out that government is addressing issue of welfare while efforts are made to ensure the smooth running of all hospitals, especially the state of laboratory, availability and dispention of drugs, infrastructure etc.

In his remark, the Chief Medical Director, Umunze General hospital, Dr. Okoh H, Ikechukwu said the meeting would go a long way to advance and reposition all the hospitals, just as he commended Governor Obiano for providing basic infracture like hospital wards, mortuary, borehole etc.

While promising that the Governor Obiano administration has assured to improve the general health condition of Anambra citizens, he called for the increase of manpower to help the hospital meet with its current demands in services.

Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) requires no introduction. He steered the ship of Nigeria’s telecom revolution, and sign-posted Nigeria’s image across the globe with his transparent management of the nation’s telecom resources. He democratized mobile phone services and put mobile phones in the hands of almost every Nigerian.

In advanced societies where performance, integrity, commitment to selfless service and other sterling virtues guide people’s choice for effective representation in the upper chamber of parliament, Engr. Ndukwe’s aspiration to represent Anambra South Senatorial Zone under APGA, would have been declared a no-contest in his favour!

Even in a clear contest where citizens of this senatorial zone are allowed to vote in an open, fair and transparent manner, Ndukwe towers above any contestant to the senate, irrespective of party affiliation. But elections in this zone are always mired in controversies with major allegations being that results of elections come from the blues even when ballots are not cast.

But the trio of Uba brothers, Senators Ugochukwu and Andy, and now Chief Chris Uba, propped up by then President Olusegun Obasanjo ahead of former Vice President of Nigeria, Chief Alex Ekwueme, has made it clear that the Senate seat belongs to the family. Chief Chris Ubah at a recent press conference asserted that two of his brothers have taken their turns, and that 2015 is his turn. The refusal of Senator Andy to allow him is now a subject in court while both are currently in the field campaigning for the seat under the PDP.

It may sound ridiculous but it is widely believed that the disposition, whims and caprices of the Ubah brothers have become the rule on who gets elected to any office in the zone. Close to any general elections since 2003, no politician eyeing the State Assembly, House of Reps or the Senate under the PDP, has succeeded without the approval of the Ubah brothers, especially, Chief Chris Ubah. In most of the cases, nominations have become very controversial, and since 2003, there has never been an election in the zone without the PDP having a set of three candidates campaigning for each of the seats from the state to the National Assembly. Even in the most unusual circumstances, the Ubah brothers have prevailed against any opposition.

The Ubah brothers have broken the national record in uncommon domination of the political space within their carved empire. That empire is the Anambra South Senatorial Zone which they have held since 1999. When they began in 1999 with the appointment of Senator Andy Ubah as the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Olusegun Obasanjo, he ensured that the controversy surrounding the nomination of his senior brother, Ugochukwu, to the Senate, was resolved in their favour. Curiously, the two other senators whose elections were contested on the PDP platform under same platform and under similar circumstances of party nomination, lost their seats at the courts.

With their dominance of the political scene of the area, the Ubah brothers began to push up the ante. On the 10th of July, 2003,there was the attempted abduction of the sitting Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige.

This was to follow in 2007 with the forceful swearing-in of Dr. Andy Ubah on May 29, 2007, after purportedly winning in an election in which the number of votes cast were more than the number of people registered in the entire state. It took the Supreme Court to reverse this in favour of Mr. Peter Obi, as the duly elected governor of the state.

Going into the 2015 elections, Senator Andy and his aides have told all those who cared to listen that his vintage position in the Senate will come to bear sooner than later. Chief Chris Ubah, on his part, is a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP. The self-acclaimed godfather of Anambra State PDP, who is now battling his brother for the seat, currently plays court to other aspirants in other elective positions in the state. In the Anambra South zone, all the citizens, including politicians are mere spectators while the Ubah brothers are playing, refereeing, and scoring the goals.

Ironically, while the Ubah brothers have completely emasculated the political space in Anambra South zone, and indeed, across the state, they are finding it difficult to share the spoils of the war among themselves. This is why Dr. Andy Ubah and Chief Chris Ubah are now pitted against each other over the Anambra South Senate seat.

While INEC has published the name of the later, with a notation of a court order forcing them to so do, Dr. Andy Ubah is also campaigning as the heir to this political throne, and the Appeal Court last week ruled in his favour. In the different comic campaign trails of the brothers, no serious subjects are raised. Boasts about their wealth and political connections are the key subjects.

Notwithstanding that for all the years that the Ubah brothers have held sway, dividends of democracy for the people in the zone have remained a mirage, and in fact, are hardly a subject of discussions. For all their connections, the two Federal Roads within the zone – Nnewi – Ekwulobia– Oko-Umunze-Okigwe Road, and Nnewi – Uga – Okigwe Road, extending across the Ubah brothers residences, have not received any government attention.

Their presence at the corridors of power is read on the pages of newspapers like fiction stories. The electorate in the zone are only privileged to see the brothers once in four years – during electioneering campaigns when they engage in salutary interactions with political and opinion leaders in the zone.

In all, it is the fear of the political connections of the Ubah brothers to the Presidency, and INEC, that is assumed the biggest threat to Ndukwe’s aspiration. Whether real or imagined, past experiences have shown that the Ubah brothers have put their connections to maximum use. It is only a credible and formidable opposition like Ndukwe that has the potentials and the capacity to challenge the brothers.

Perhaps, Engr. Ndukwe’s emergence under APGA may break the cycle of inaccessible representation of the people of the South Senatorial zone of Anambra State.

But the question is: Will Professor Jega’s men in INEC muster the courage to conduct free, fair and transparent election in the zone and let the people decide who would represent them?

.Emenike writes from Ekwulobia, Aguata LGA of Anambra State.

The Commissioner for Ag
riculture in Anambra State, Mr Nnamdi Mekoh, has said that the agricultural sector in the state had attracted more than $1 billion investment in 2014.
Fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the commissioner said the investments were made in rice and cassava farming, poultry and fisheries.
“We have attracted more than one billion dollar investment in rice, cassava, poultry and fishery in the past one year and in the next two years, we are going to sign in more investors,” he said.
Nnamdi said the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme of the Federal Government was working effectively in the state and they do not want it stopped.
The commissioner, however, said areas of improvement were being worked out, including a legal frame work to consolidate the scheme for a better delivery system. He also said that there were other state-based programmes for farmers to access fertiliser, improved seeds and access to heavy farm machinery.
“The GES scheme is a technology which is being used to drive the Agricultural Transformation Agenda of the Federal Government with the aim of repositioning the sector and produce 20 million tonnes of additional food in four years.
“The scheme allows registered farmers to access farm inputs like seeds, fertilisers and agro chemicals at subsidised rate via mobile phones.” He said the scheme was being expanded to include access to loans, insurance, heavy farm machinery and extension services.
