I reckon there are many many ancient sites still buried in soil and forest throughout Nigeria and West Africa, unexplored. Likely cities, monuments etc. We've really not begun to explore this region. Nice one op.

Yes indeed.

It is a shame that our wealthy folks do not bother about such things. Rather we wait for oyinbos to come and explore then exploit our CULTURAL heritage.
Quite sad!

History ke? first of all, after JSS 3, we are divided into 3 different categories- art, commercial and sciences. the sciences do not study any history past the history they read in primary 4 and 5 in macmillian 4 and 5 about dan-fodio which is Arab (white) connection. and the excursion we had from primary school through final years of secondary school was that of slavery and colonization and a few about how independence came about(systematically giving glory to the whites), and about murtala black bullet sprayed benz.
At the university level too, its all about slavery most of the time, and latin american stuffs etc. Nothing about the beginning of the black race is ever taught, nothing. except what the nollywood people are showed us which is properly screened from above.
The african schooling system is dictated by the colonialists till today.

It was removed from the curriculum sometime last year with the excuse that there aren't enough trained history teachers. Can you imagine that rubbish? Is that enough reason to remove such an important subject?!?

In my secondary school we didn't have a history teacher, but I would make my way to the library and read all the history books I could lay my hands on.

MANY, MANY, likes to you and this post. This is a part of history and culture that should be preserved and used to enrich society today.

On a slightly related point. I once saw the first ever Bible translated into Yoruba. It was in a glass case in the first Two Stories house in Nigeria at Badagry.

That Bible is a part of Nigerian history on a religious, cultural and indeed tribal level and should be much better preserved and indeed promoted. IMHO it was not given anywhere near the prominence or preservation that such a unique 'artifact' deserves!

They can't teach you the real thing, they teach you things that keeps you mesmerised and indecisive. What you learn is oyinbo curriculum, his stated version of the past and how they want you to think of yourself.

There is nothing new under sun, what is happening now has happened thousands of years ago,but indifferent forms and shapes

Chei, Nigeria is breeding a generation that will not know jack about their identity. I remember the Benin Empire, Oyo Empire, Kanuri etc that we were thought. This was in the mid 1980's...

No wonder there are so many vacuous young folks these days...
It's an absolute disgrace and a scandal. I wonder why the likes of Soyinka are silent on this. A nation that doesn't teach its children their history is a dead, lost nation.

Maybe the problem might be "packaging"? Maybe we have to get creative on how to pass this history along. Just thinking out loud... smiley

I think we need to appreciate the value of history in the first place. Especially these buffoons who pose as our leaders. The very idea of removing history from the school curriculum is shocking and revolting. If ever a group of people needed to learn/relearn their history, it is Africans, following our long record of foreign invasions, slavery and colonisation. And here we are banning its study!

If he understands the intricacies if building magnificent structures,he will think twice about living in filth, dust and slums like so many Nigerians are doing in the 21st century. He will think twice about why the present Africans are destroying their own things rather than building. Why a mathematician should become a passive pastor rather than practising the magics of applied maths.

I quite agree, a total disgrace! Sadly the world over History is seen as a second class subject and of lesser importance than maths, science etc etc. And I do certainly appreciate (and agree) that to earn a living in todays world Maths and science and technological subjects are vitally important! HOWEVER after I have earned my LIVING I need to LIVE!

I work to live NOT I live to work.

To enjoy my own life and society I need to appreciate my culture and indeed the culture of the people/places where I travel. This knowledge enriches the lives of us all and is an INTEGRAL PART OF ANY FULLY 'ROUNDED' EDUCATION.

Nigeria should address this issue!

The question you most probably looking for is "what then happened?" it simply self-forgetfulness, as the same way way we forgot our history. It is now time for self-remembrance which will lead to self ressurection. Then GOD will celebrate it with a powerful sunflare depending on the level of ressurection(joke). sunflare can't kill us if we eat properly.
self-forgetfulness took us 50,000 years to become complete bolo, mumu and stupid as you have described.

The economic importance of the Pyramid? Pyramids were constructed for ritualistic and religious reasons in many cultures across the globe (Egypt, East & West Africa, Central & parts of Southern America, Asia etc).

Today there is an economic benefit where tourism is developed but I don't understand the question really. Does the question imply that we ignore things that are not of direct economic benefit? What a miserable life we all have if that were the case.

I have many Nigerian friends in Belfast. In fact it is fair to say my best friend here is an Igbo guy. I am also involved with the Nigerian community though friends and a community group. While there are cultural differences they are generally well thought of. It is very funny though when I meet a Nigerian here for the first time and greet them in Yoruba or Igbo and they are amazed that an oyinbo can do this. The Nigerian community in Dublin is even larger than that in Belfast!

Ancient Igbo civilization was a great one, and evidence like this points to a very early period of origin in the history of man.

Who would have been entombed in such a structure?
I have been made believe very few Igbo communities have imperial thrones

The early Igbo pyramids seem to have been designated as a residence for a God not the remains of any human.

While this is at odds with the Egyptian motivation for building them it is certainly in keeping with the pyramid building motivation of other cultures (Central American)
