[True that. While applying for the financial analyst position in my current place of work, I included on my resume that I loved playing scrabble, chess and reading books. The main interviewer who happens to be a big chess fan noticed it and started questioning me on it. Asked me why I love playing chess and some other basic questions about the game. I don't know what rubbish I was saying but he seemed to be really impressed because I saw him smiling for the first time during the interview.
cry

After getting the job, I advised all my friends to do pay more attention to the hobby aspect of their Cv. My friend who is fancies ludo like crazy did the same by writing playing ludo and draupht as his hobby on his CV. We don't know why but he is still at home looking for a job up till this moment despite the fact that he made 2.1 in school.

FriedPlantain
hahahaha.
What kind of human being is he @Ludo/draught.

He should have funkyfied it to....lets say, Monopoly and Chess.

I remember failing an interview because I love Crime/Detective Novels...hahaha
__I also remember passing one because I play chess. So, I agree with you. wink

The problem is, Nairalanders keep clamouring for CHANGE, now this is thread that would help (potential) job-seekers tailor their CV properly. They won't comment.

I'm goint to update my CV now. I learn something new everyday.

Yeah this is noted but op can l add sleeping as one of my hobbies
Nice write up. thanks
What impression will the prospective employer have of you after reading that you sleep as a hobby? It means that every opportunity you get, you will like to sleep on the job.

One of the most neglected parts of a resume is “Hobbies” it is usually located before the reference. Experience and observation have shown that graduates don’t understand what a hobby is or that they don’t know how to apply it in their resume or curriculum vitae.

Like other section in a resume, hobby has a crucial part as it helps to create a spider web link to one of the sections in a resume most specially the skills and ability section.
Hobby section deserves the same time devoted when writing other section. Many resume as failed because of this section. The question is how?

1. Your hobby above other things, tell your recruiter more about your social life.
2. What you do when you’re not working
3. How you manage your time
4. How you use your skills and ability in an informal settings
5. Your availability for team work.

With this 5 point, you can see a gap in your resume when you neglect the place of hobby.
No recruiters would want to employ a robot as employee. Hobby gives your recruiter a clearer picture of you. One of the benefit of hobby in a resume is that is can create an atmosphere for discussion with your recruiters during the job interview.
Now that you know the important of hobby, you should be careful not to lie or list all the hobbies you can think of. Three to four is enough. You might want to ask why.

If you list all the hobbies you can think about, then your recruiter might be force to think that you might never have time to do any formal work outside the work environment.
So what are you waiting for, start editing your resume if you have one already.
And remember, except you are writing a general resume (fresh graduate), try to tailor your hobby to match your job specification and not just that, make sure there is a linking or connection with your skills and ability or other section in the resume.
Example
If you write internet research as one of your skills then there should be reading or writing in your hobby... there is a link between internet research and writing/reading. This is just a sample. There can be other things which can link each other in a resume apart from the example above and below.
Creative thinking can link chess/Sudoku/scrabble game

I appreciate the fact that you've drawn intending applicants attention to the need to take this aspect seriously but I totally disagree with the bold statement in green. According to standard practice, an employee is not expected to take a job out of the work environment except he has a selfish motive to breach a popular clause often referred to as "conflict of interest"

Advise your friend to remove the draft (did I get the spelling right?) aspect. People who play such games are viewed as lazy individuals.

This one of the reasons why employers recruit the wrong employees cos people lie to secure a job slot, why should I lie about what I do for leisure? Loving clubbing and partying doesn't make to party at the office if employed. #FakePeopleEverywhere
Re: How Hobbies Can Make You Have A Bad Resume by fandango: 5:19pm On Feb 19, 2015
Even some ppl wil not study and undstand the industry before submiting thier resumé. E.g you are going for Navy,Army,SSS or NNPC recruitment,in hubby segment ppl will write singing, dancing, worshiping God and playing wt children. Instead of writting playing handball, swimming, tenis even cooking with these qualities your recruiter will kn dat you have a sound mind.

My dear, I totally get your point...

@OP, I totally understand what you mean but why can't we be honest about our hobby at least?
Re: How Hobbies Can Make You Have A Bad Resume by bodeoni: 5:33pm On Feb 19, 2015
Nice one OP but instead of hobbies, I would rather a young graduate state his/her intrests. Intrests like Volunteering, Teaching, Gathering info etc.

Just my opinion tho

OP nice one! Tailoring Tailoring and Tailoring!!! This and many more have been emphasized over again. I've come to realize that every section of our individual CVs is as important as your degree/grade; and as well should be taken serious. Some still doubt how relevant our hobbies are to a specified job. Significantly, many of us are blessed/gifted with a lot of relevant and irrelevant (fun) hobbies. But all these are for us to selectively pick the ones that connects positively to the job in question; and pls be sincere about it. If you don't have, I feel its better you leave it. NB: You remember the movie 'Ben Carson' when he went for an interview? One of his hobbies that created a good rapport with his recruiter was: his love for classical music (G.F Handel) even as a surgeon. Seems we share the same hobby. In summary, Just be Real and tailor your CV well. We are still learning. Kind regards

I feel all the above almost everybody has been saying only applies to those who don't know anybody when they want to get employed.

Nepotism is the 'in thing' in Nigeria now, while many will strive to get that attractive C.V, those who are well connected don't need to bother themselves with having an awesome C.V.

I've seen many who got employed by virtue of the power of nepotism, even having a third class degree. For me, I've learned to apply the Nigerian mentality of almost all I do, because if you want to catch a thief, you must think like a thief!.
