The House of Representatives may ban the use of Hiace buses for commercial transportation pending the outcome of an investigation into the road worthiness of the buses.Following incidence of incessant accidents associated with such buses in the country. The House of Reps on February 19, Thursday, mandated its Committee on Land Transport to investigate the use of Hiace buses for commercial transportation. The investigation became imperative after an accident involving 11 female supporters of Nigeria’s first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan who lost their lives in a ghastly auto crash thatoccurred on Saturday night, February 14.http://www.naij.com/389279-house-of-reps-move-to-ban-hiace-buses-over-bayelsa-auto-crash.html |

This is overly irrational and petty The said house forgot so easily that the said brand of commuter bus is predominantly use in Nigeria in commuting its citizens to and fro therefore is more likely to be the model to involve in an eccident The said law makers forgot so easily like my mentor living in London do say if he visit Nigeria "you don't speed with Belgium and obsolete autos" whenever he sees old vehicle speeding ; that 80% percent of those hiace buses are pretty much old, a law is needed to pull them off our road Instead of banning them Prominency playing a role why a whole house will start now to investigate cum ban such a menace I cry for my country 25 Likes 2 Shares |

Our LaW makers are so fund of rubbing their idleness in our faces. They have just tried to tell us now that millions of ordinary Nigerians that die on our death traps called roads are not relevant. It has to take the death of closer aids before they wake up. Banning the buses would not do any good when our roads are terrible, unmarked and narrow, not to talk about street lamps...... 16 Likes 2 Shares |

You see what I usually say? These men don't know why they are in the house of reps. So they could not decode that if banning a brand of vehicle because it's involved in road mishap has been the rule, we would not have any vehicle left in Nigeria, 12 Likes |

The way we shoot down good ideas sha. . Just read the posts above and you would think that the House of Reps are just blind but the opposite is the case. That thing is nothing but a flying coffin. This is a very very good idea. Hiace buses and their equivalents should be used to carry goods ONLY! THERE IS NO OTHER SERIOUS COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHRE SMALL HIACE BUSES ARE USED FOR LONG DISTANCE JOURNEYS. It is only here. That bus is mainly used to carry goods. Not to pack humans like sardines from Lagos to Aba. That bus has been responsible for thousands of deaths on Nigerian roads. I lost one of my friends who flew into this country and tried going to the east from Lagos with that brand called "Hummer". They perished somewhre near Ore. It should be banned totally. It is small. It is speedy. And the small interior forces passengers into very uncomfortable positions leaving them with no room to negotiate an escape once there is an impact.. For inter city travels, we should either be using the 'luxurious' buses, or the one we call "civilians" or something like ANAMCOs "14-14". . They are a bit bigger, less speedy, more comfortable and more amenable to Nigerian roads. 44 Likes 2 Shares |

Clueless and Senseless people. ... If we continue to ban any brand of car involved in auto accident here in Nigeria, soon no car will ply our road. We should apply proactive measures and get things done right. Not fire brigade approach. 1 Like 1 Share |

Okay, I hate those buses but you don't have to ban them. Rather, enforce road worthiness requirements and carry out random tests even on the highway. (The full road worthiness test takes a while but an expedited version could be carried out more frequently). You are stopped on the road, they check your tyre thread and expiry date (from the manufacture date), your lights (brake, reverse, headlamps, indicators, hazard), brakes etc. Shouldn't take more than 10 mins. Plus I'd really like to see all the road traffic agencies and units merged into one. Call them the road traffic police or something. That includes the FRSC, VIO and the Federal Highway Patrol unit of the police. However, that'd only work if it is decentralized from the federal structure else there'd be complications. Eg. The VIO collects revenue for the state government rather than the federal, through the internal revenue board. So the mainstream police stop you and ask for your license and registration (which is done purely to find out if the car is stolen) while the road traffic body does everything else. In countries like the UK they even test for alcohol intoxication levels of the driver. 1 Like |

So every time there is a crash will they ban the type of vehicles involved? Why not just ban road travel totally na? Have they even taken the time to investigate the accident to determine the actual cause of the crash? |

When Daina Air crashed and kill alot of Nigerians, people called for the ban of that commercial airline but the federal government did little or nothing about the issues. Now a commercial bus had an accident with prominent politicians and they want to spoil another man's garri. Let them find something better to Legislate then wasting time on baseless issues. 1 Like |

izuch:My point is banning a brand of vehicle because of road accident is not a good step in accident prevention unless investigation has confirmed such suspicion. What about looking at the causes in areas like bad roads, drunk driving, over speeding, reduced vision of some drivers, ensuring that those issued driving license have been adequately tested, overloading, making calls when driving. Talking about banning Hiace is selfish and lame. |

menesheh: I will speculate that it is the Press that engineered the ban aspect of the report. Investigations by the legislature into consumer goods gone wrong has a long and chequered history worldwide and Toyota appearing before legislature is no new thing. Committees usually handle these matters so it doesn't bog the Houses' down and yes personal bills and consumer protection oversight is important. |
