| Should I Leave? (please Help) by CaptainAmerica(op): 11:08am On Mar 07, 2015 |
I'm in a state of dilemma.. Here's my story. I'm currently in my 400L studying Medicine and Surgery in a Nigerian University. For some time now, my parents have been working our papers to leave the country. Recently, everything clicked into place. Considering the fact that this Is a "once in a life time opportunity, Should I leave and start afresh? Or should I stay and complete my course of study? (Though we're having some duration issues) Thanks |

With my own shikini opinion,I'll advise u 2 stay and finish cos d four years u used alredi no be beans,u'll jst further wen u get there.....or you travell and roll in for another course which takes lesser years compared to medicine.ur getting old and time waits 4 nobadi |

I think you should consider finishing up your course since you are almost done with it. I personally don't have a good reason to say so anyways. You should listen to your inner heart. But I think it's wise to get done with this one. |

In the original post, I stated that my school is having duration issues.. What I mean is that: my expected year if graduation is 2017 but at the moment, it doesn't look likely for my set to graduate 2017. 'Cos we have a lot of sets before us that haven't graduated. And we are having accreditation issues. Cc: Buccal tattooboy abduletudaye W3naija Thanks |

CaptainAmerica:what course are you interested to study in the states. That would give us better idea of your dilemma because medicine night be far more profitable than the course in mind. Plus considering you won't graduate at the right time which is 2017. That means between now and 2019 when you might graduate, you would already be a graduate of an American institution. Hmmm great thing. But which is better. A graduate of an American institution or a Nigerian raised medical doctor. I think your passion should be the key here. |

| Re: Should I Leave? (please Help) by Nobody: 3:13pm On Mar 07, 2015 |
CaptainAmerica:I thought medicine and Surgery in the states is pursued as a post graduate programme. Like you apply with a degree In biology, chemistry or any other degree related to health. Medicine and surgery in the states is damn expensive for foreigners and unless there are scholarships or financial wavers for it, then you must be a son of a wealthy man probably politician. Anyways Goodluck. If it were me medicine in the states is surer than medicine in 9ja simply because practising doctors in the states are millionaires meanwhile doctors in Nigeria merely live average lives . And you know you can't practise medicine in the states as a medical graduate from a Nigerian institution. MBBS is inferior to MD- doctor of medicine. (degree awarded to successful doctors in the states) |

Vessi:That's not true Armed with your MBBS, you can practice in the States if you pass United States Medical Licensing Examination ® (USMLE) Get your facts straight bro ![]() |

decode55:oh I see. Good news to the OP. However passing the USLME is one step towards the right direction. There still are many hurdles to jump over. |

My personal opinion is that you and your family should seize the opportunity! If everything is in place, I would assume that you are only a flight away. Anyway, you may not be behind and may actually graduate before your time. For everyone who is saying that you are too old to start over, there is no such thing as being too old for college or schooling in America. Becoming a medical doctor here requires a lot of testing and boards, but the benefits that you will reap will be great for yourself and your family. Nothing in life comes easy and we have to work hard for everything anyways, no matter where we are. I would leave a not so good place for a better place in the sake of a better life any day. I'm not positive, but I'm sure there are a lot of people in your country that would love to be in your shoes. I'd say pack your bags and take a chance! ![]() |

I believe it is better you finish and have a certificate in your hand before you go. You ll just have to use the certificate to advance when you go over there. Education is quite expensive abroad and except your parents are rich, starting all over might not be so easy. So just get your first degree and if you have to advance your studies, it ll just be postgraduate which is shorter in duration and thus cheaper than pursuing a first degree. |
