Doctors in.Nigeria work under terrible conditions financially and otherwise.

Worst part of it all, some of the people.went into.medicine for prestige, money or dictates of their family. There is no.passion. I interviewed a couple of them that work in some hospitals in FCT and all I could do was shake my head. I walked a.few through the algorithms of ACLS and you could see the astonishing and overwhelmed looks in their faces. It was then that it finally dawned on me why politicians run to foreign countries for medical check. I don't want to go into the gory details of what I saw when I visited UNTH.

You folks think the average roadside clinic can handle a gun shot wound or accident victim.

They can't help the patients much even if they wanted to,they don't have the necessary equipment needed to do that, neither do they have the expertise for the most part.
Even here in the USA ,severe trauma and gun shot patients don't just end up at the nearest hospital and even when they do it's just for stabilization before they are taken by mediflight to trauma centers equipped to handle such.

You folks are demanding too much from people who have no knowledge,no experience and no training in handling things like this.

Most of these doctors probably just have an MBBS and nothing more

The facilities have no in house labs,X-ray or scan machines,no blood bank let alone more sophisticated equipment needed to stabilize such patients and certainly cannot perform the life saving surgeries these patients need.

They operate with much limitation, truth be told

Most are actually glorified dispensaries

The police report is just a way to send them away to go die elsewhere and not in their facility

The most they can do is put a drip in the patients arm if they can find a visible vein and watch him die

The average Nigerian so-called hospital can't do much for you beyond malaria and appendicitis if you're lucky

Let us remember the plight of DJDOLA ,two months in a Lagos hospital and millions of naira and they couldn't even give a definitive diagnosis and used our friend for experiment ,treating him for everything else and making up diagnosis along the way while billing the patient and smiling to the bank.

That should be an eye opener

.
And what is your conclusion?

I lost 2 of my family friend to gas explosion unfortunately @ the time the doctors went striking. We had no option that to take them to a private clinic where they did little or nothing to salvage them. The Doctors and Nurses where non-chalant. A female Doctoor even made a statement as wicked as " whether they survive or not, that her salaries must be paid". They allowed the burns to get septic and both mother and teenage dota died! embarassed

Some Nigerians are so experienced in pouring out jargons from their blocked head. In a country where President is clueless, Fayose is a governor, Doyin Okupe is involved in public affairs, Obanikoro is just appointed a minister, and Bode George receives a medal, and so on and so forth. Doctors in Nigeria are generally heartless
They care nothing about their patients, human lives mean nothing to them and their nurses
The reception has a standing order not to let anyone without the stipulated thousands get past the outpatient department no matter how sick
All they are after is how much they milk from the ignorant helpless citizens
A nigerian doctor will keep a patient for weeks and pour infusion ( drip) down their arms endlessly without a diagnosis
Diagnosing your illness is not a priority, many don't care about that, they are after the payment of the bills
That's why a patient with a treatable ailment will walk in with both legs and leave in a casket
Butchers many of them

In all my years living and working in the USA I have never heard of a single woman I know or a woman known by anyone I know die while having a baby but in Nigeria it's a minute by minute occurrence.
People with normal uncomplicated pregnancies die daily at childbirth in nigerian hospitals due to negligence and malpractice and the families have no recourse.

Ever wonder why these folks don't let patients in on what is ailing them?
Ever wonder why they scratch off the names on the medication bottles they give you?
Ever wonder why they get angry when a concerned doctor calls to chat about a patient in their care and course of treatment?

The same corruption, heartlessness and greed that has permeated every sector of Nigeria is also rife in the hospitals
Why should anyone be surprised?
I think you are stereotyped in thinking.... how can you just say all Nigerian Doctors... I am really disappointed in your way of thinking... I thought you were more intelligent than this

----Any doctor trained in a nigerian teaching hospital knows how things are done in the teaching hospitals. We know how the resident doctors, medical officers and house officers do their work tirelessly. We know about 30 day calls,we know abt no-nonsense senior colleagues,we know about queries,we know about extra calls,we know all about doing more than your very best even in the face of our under - equipped hospitals.......
----Many patients/their relatives see doctors as wicked or lazy or whatever bc we cannot always meet all their expectations with what we have at our disposal.....A patient does not understand that the little blood in d blood bank is strictly for emergency cases (life or death situations),that there may truly not be any more bed space for his admission in a federal teaching hospital, that a medical officer in the emergency room of a govt.hospital may not be able to do much for him unless he makes a deposit bc he is simply following instructions laid down by the same government, that he may need to go somewhere else for certain investigations/tests cos the govt has not made provisions for such in some of their hospitals.....etc
-----I understand all these,i understand patients'/their relatives' frustrations cos they may not know how things really are.
---- What i do not understand is how someone who claims to be a doctor, who might actually have graduated from one of the medical schools in nigeria, someone who is not one of the uninformed, will make allegations as unfounded as what the OP made.
----I was in medical school for six years, did housemanship for one year, then came back for residency after NYSC...8 years altogether(in the same teaching hospital),i have witnessed/heard of only one maternal death,a case of eclampsia, brought in from a maternity home after patient had had several episodes of seizures...and i still remember how solemn the handing-over round was in O/G dept the next morning. The CMAC was even around...
----Nobody ever buys blood from outside d hospital if on admission in a teaching hospital. ...you are only asked to bring a donor who is screened n bled right in the hospital's lab.
----An emergency case is never turned away in a teaching hospital,be it a criminal/gunshot case. All you need to do is report to the necessary authority even as you are resuscitating.
----I can not speak for private hospitals, cos my experience there is quite limited, but i find it hard to believe that all these callousness/malpractice abound there
----I know there are some bad/uncaring doctors, just like there are bad eggs amongst every group of professionals anywhere in the world, what i dont understand is the generalisation.
---- I lost my mum in my teenage years due to what i believe was a doctor's carelessness, but even then,as a young girl,i was not stupid enough to conclude that all doctors were monsters just cos of that...
---I rest my case.....

Most naija doctors are just after money. I am diabetic and the doctor who was managing the condition was dare DEVIL, I almost died and I developed neuropathy because of his useless advise and treatment not until I met an old family friend who is a gynea that God used in bringing me back to life and still having foot pains. a doctor who could not tell me to get a common glucose meter to be checking my sugar level always, instead he will say come to the hospital for your test always.

hhmm, i really wonder d purpose of this thread. Nt everything u ve said s true. Its nt news dat nigeria health system lacks adequate funding. Yet drs still try to work under dese adverse conditions. Bushdoc addressed most of d points u raised well.
Ur posts are very disappointing coming frm a person like u. U wont talk of d ignorance factor dat leads to late presentation in nig hospitals. Patients visit native drs and prayer houses b4 presenting to d hospital and u expect d dr to perform a magic ba?ok.
If d facts in all ur posts were all true, then there wont b any living being in nig.
U wont talk of d successfl ivfs dat are going on in nigerian hospitals, or u havent heard of any? Thankfully there s a thread in Nl whr u can check it out.
Biko all dese hatefl comments abt d nig dr are nt necessary. The system s bad, yess, bt drs in nig re trying. I dont think u ll b able to practise in d condition under wch dese drs practise.
what condition are you talking about exactly? Have you really been to standard Nigerian hospital lately? Some of the hospitals are state of the art... But most Nigerian doctors just simply suck. Most goes into the profession for prestige and not exactly for passion. No research, nothing nothing... They can only handle small sickness like malaria... The surgeons are the suckest.. If Nigeria surgeon operates on 10 patients, there is probability that 5 would die.. Go to general hospitals and see something yourself.

OP are referring to private or public hospitals? Cos I heard there is much difference in the treatment...no?
Re: The Real Reason Nigerian Hospitals Ask For Police Report In Trauma Patients by Ochek: 7:12pm On Mar 11, 2015
bushdoc9919:

Not all of them...but some of them.

I once worked in a rural hospital(private)...where the doc in charge(my boss) removed a bullet from the thigh of a patient. Saved it for the police, who came in shortly after the op(My boss and the local police were on good terms).

Which is why we need to have an Emergency Medicine Residency Programme in this country....and why we need to train more trauma surgeons, and build more teaching-level hospitals. And it starts with increasing funding for health.

Again, more reason why funding for health has to be increased. And we probably need more public private facilities. Maybe on a Build-Operate-Transfer policy..

Not exactly. Sometimes the Police accompanies the patient, sometimes, they are just a call away. And sometimes....a police report is necessary.

Depends. Many Nigerian teaching hospitals can handle multiply injured patients well. Where the problem starts is how the patients get to the hospital(no effective ambulance and paramedic service which means that patients are transported in private vehicles...wrongly)..and whether the patients can afford care.Even at govt subsidized prices....many patients cannot afford care.

I work at an average Nigerian hospital....and have worked in rural medicine....and I have treated many more cases than just Malaria and appendicitis. I have treated botched abortions(not the most pleasant bit of my career), diabetics, hypertensives, respiratory illnesses, HIV AIDS illnesses, diarrhea, cholera, skin diseases....viral, fungal and bacterial, the odd case of chicken pox, and many other conditions. And even working at hospitals in the rural areas that were not ''standard''.

Yes....largely because....zero facilities. And as someone has said here earlier elsewhere...the way we train docs in this country needs to be reformed syllabus wise.

Definitely a matured response from a well trained Dr. Some local medical thugs would have rained abuses on the fellow for that.
Bless you bro! May God think through your brain and work through your hands.

To me. This police reports stuff doesn't make much sense. What stops the doctor from continuing with the treatment of the injured person while the nearest police station is contacted ? Due diligence can be done whilst the endangered life is being saved...

Very simple process.. my bosses will say, Use your head

Silly thread from an ignorant fellow.
Running down Drs, quoting cases she knows nothing about just because there are the usual gullible people ready to jump on the. 'Drs are bad' bandwagon.
just to disprove one of ur 'examples', women on an average register in 2 hospitals for antenatal. one private and one gov't, just so they have options, so they can have a choice in their delivery(which private hospitals tend to give) and also , considering the wonderful transport situation, for convenient transportation. Every hospital has their policies and anyone who registers there has To abide by those policies, same as all over the world.
Imagine you making noise about gunshot cases.. if Nigerians with all the limitations you talked about still pullout medical miracles, without resorting to a plethora of investigations because they're lazy to reason, then maybe it's time u stfu .

sometimes I watch foreign medical shows and laugh.
Heard someone using Dr House as an example, I laughed...if a Dr were to operate like that here, he'll lose >60% of his patient...Truth.

The problem with Nigerian health care is 60% the patient who in his/her ignorance chooses to do things his/her way.

Finally, fyi,
DOCTORS ASK FOR POLICE REPORT SO THEY DON'T END UP TREATING AND DISCHARGING CRIMINALS BY MISTAKE.
I HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN TIME &TIME AGAIN.
also,
IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW.
