Nairamode, exactly what happened to me in warri last year October.

In my own case they (about 9 policemen, including 2females) tried all means to handcuff my 2 hands for saying they should take it easy and not push us out of the bus. I fought so had to resist them. They were only able to handcuff my left hand, forced me in a tricycle (keke) and took me to the Enerhen Police station, Effurun Delta state. I immediately called my family lawyer on our way to the station. At the station, I told them I was a barrister to be in November same year and that I'll take up the matter personally. The lawyer called me back when I was at the police station to inform that he had sent 2 lawyers to me and that I should exercise patience. During the call, I place my phone on speaker to their hearing. Immediately after the call, they politely asked me that it has not gotten to the extent of calling my lawyer and that I shouldn't obstruct a policeman on duty.
At that moment, I knew I had won the fight. Some minutes later, they asked me to go without any further delay.

What kept bothering me about that issue till now is, what if they had guns with them? I didn't see any gun with them that day.

Also always learn to give them official compliment before making an appeal. Like coming to attention and using phrase like 'shun for officer' you will never have problem with them.

Hi Guys,

I personally felt things would improve with the Nigerian police but apparently things are getting worse daily.
I have been threatened and intimidated severally myself at gun point and only I can explain how fearful I was that night.

At gun point, I was told to move away from the scene simply because I challenged the logicality of what the police did to the innocent and helpless commuter bus driver.

It was at Ojota and a police man had appeared in the bus magically. The driver was at the designated bus stop without any sign saying otherwise. He was about closing the door when I suppose the police man entered and barking at the driver to go and park at their spot... I was amazed.

We the passengers were trying to ask him what happened to have warranted him wanting to arrest us but he gave no explanation.

We were half way to our destination and all they felt was honourable was to order all of us (both young and old) to get down from the bus and find our way. I had moved closer and said these words: "Sir, can you kindly tell me what happened and what was the offence of this gentle man".

He became irritated and started asking me who I was... Demanded my ID and pointed the gun at me to disappear. I was dazed.

On many occasions have I being sprayed pepper spray in the eyes in a commuter bus (Lord I need my vehicle).

This morning, I read how a young man who was a banker with FCMB was reportedly shot dead by the accounts of eye witness by the police at Gombe state.

I also remember how an on-line friend of mine claimed he was shot at Ikorodu for refusing to give the police N100.

These are the things I feel we should do if we do not want to find ourselves in a deadly situation with our police men. God saves us.

1) Do not argue with the police.

2) Obey all instructions given by the police.

3) Do not over-speed through road blocks.

4) Compromise on the bribe if asked.

5) Send text messages immediately if arrested.

6) Always have an identification card.

7) Lastly, have lawyer friends.

When i did not have a ride of my own. I avoided any confrontation with the police.

1: Do not carry a Laptop without a receipt or a cover letter
2: Always carry an ID Card or a Drivers License .. ensure that it has not expired and ensure that your ID is not labelled with an CONCEPT or VENTURES or ALABA & Sons Co.
3: Always keep small change (N5, N10, N20) in your pocket. it should total N200 outside your bus fare. this is for any unplanned encounter with the Police
4: Never Challenge an Illiterate Policeman with questions - the Educated ones will argue with you but the illiterate ones only know how to cock their guns - Please note
5: Never argue with the ones who wear reflective clothing that covers their TAGS.. beware, they are out for one thing only.. illegal extortion (there is legal extortion FYI)
6: After 11:00PM Weekdays/Weekends you are on your own.

Start demanding for your civil rights as you wake up tommorow and see if you won't be shot dead before 10AM. The hypocrisy of democracy in nigeria is just too much. These same citizens who are treated as slaves in their own country go to foreign countries and start demanding for civil rigts from people who's parents fought for their rights. We are realy pathetic.

Op,i think the tips you gave are good to go with.
Those Ejigbo police are criminals at night .. They forced a taxi carrying a woman on labour to stop because of 100 naira and the poor woman ended up giving birth Ryt inside the taxi. Its a crazy world

An average police man you see on the road also refer to as " road masters" has similar triats. They are group of frustrated people who are generally the rank and file, either they have been denied promotion for long or stagnated in a particular rank for a time or they have gone to school and the force has refused to upgrade them meanwhile they recruit senior cadets who are mostly younger people of their age to be their senior. Most have been denied lucrative postings or transfer to where their families are or are been posted to a particular place as punishments ground, while some are made redundants by retaining them in a particular command or division for long. The risk they take can't be measured by the salary, these are people who have family to feed and many people looks up to them. When you come across them be calm and respectfulan don't show them you knw the work better than them or your life is so comfortable than them. Being diplomatic and humble is just the key.

Well Said OP...These people are destiny terminators....I could recall vividly in 2012 I was goin home Iba(LASU area)..this was how these Policemen stopped the commercial bus nd asked the driver to either park or settle them....I guess the driver himself just smoked weed prior to that incident coz he was just misbehaving and was trying to lock the policeman in his words"I no go give u any money, come do anything u wan do"both of them arguing and locking each other...This was how another COP,his colleague came from no where and shot towards where I was siting and the windscreen broke into pieces...OMG,Jesus Christ...I was shocked/I was gone!!!...Thank God for my Late Father in heaven that day..I didn't know how I wasn't hit by the bullet coz I was sitng just next to the door...didn't know how My God preserved me that day..anytime I remember,I just keep thanking God for sparing my life up until this very moment...This has been a memorable day for me so far..since that day,any commercial bus I board and at any point is having an issue with the driver of the bus,I'll rather give the policeman money from my purse...ratherthan just allowing the driver arguing of speeding off...They are destiny killers..

Na true talk.

The Nigerian Police is a total reflection of the governance we run in this country.

They demand bride at gun points in front of everyone like it is their rights. The oga in the station is even worst than those mofos on the roads.

If you refuse to give the mofo 200naira on the road and follow him to the station, his boss will demand 2,000 naira.
