I guess too much diphthongs in ur language, made u jealous, some do form but cwiously most of us just catch up dt right from the preschool days, by the way English is our official language, if I speak it beta than d brits aint forming, it's just me, dt's wat I learnt to speak...so polishing my accent to make me more presentable aint a crime, cos I know my real value is deep within..so speaking the sexiest accent coupled with a great personality is just a compliment...pple shud just be themselves though.. ![]() |

Brandnew2:I just did and watched a video of him for 3mins. I don't know what accent he has but definitely not Brit. May be you can help out |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:23pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif:I don't understand this post at all ![]() you will soon come and say that Chuka Umunna's accent isn't british or that Chiwetel Ejiofor fakes his accent I have seen videos of Wole Soyinka a couple of times and yes his words have connections to the british accent.. Copy cats?? I wouldn't say that cause there is no way you would spend much years with people and wouldn't get a hint or rather learn their language, this doesn't apply to the british accent alone.. You were in the east for four years and learnt how to speak their Igbo, so how is this different for someone who has been in the united kingdom for four years and wouldn't grab the accent ![]() |

faradexs09:I take it that was referred to me. Jealous of people's accent? That's a new one. True one can brush up their accent to whatever standard, that's fine, their life of course. People can brush up their accent to be even better than the Brits, that's also fine too. But my argument has been that of the British accent. The examples of people given by many of the debaters is in completely difference from the Brit accent I know and hear daily on the streets and at which my colleagues and friends speak. Please this is a debate, not a brawl, so be civil. |

ronald4lif:That's a fine example of a perfect Nigerian accent..That's almost the way Wole Soyinka sounds. That's pure English devoid of our local languages and to me that sounds way better than the so called fake british accents you're yapping about. Who wants to start Quacking like a duck... I for one don't fancy that. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 10:26pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Just check how Alex Ferguson speaks and compare that to Wole Soyinka. Who do you prefer? |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:27pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Wole Soyinka speaks plain English yess, and he sometimes infuses the brits, does that mean he is faking it?? |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:28pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
dechandel:Your examples of Chuka Umanna and Chiwetel falls in line with my argument. They were born and/or grew up in the UK. I would never cite such examples as a reference to this debate. Learning a language is different from having an accent. I said I lived in the East and learnt Igbo, and I also said I don't have the igbotic accent. There's a difference between learning a language and adopting an accent. Or you could correct me if I am wrong. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:32pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Brandnew2:Brilliant. I can't say British accent is better than that of Soyinka's. If he speaks plain english (whatever that means) then I want to believe you're saying his english is not of British accent. To be honest, I like the way he speaks than the way the Brits speaks. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:34pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Brandnew2:I prefer Soyinka's. Alex Ferguson has Scottish accent and to me that's the worse I can bear. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by faradexs09(m): 10:35pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif:uhm just my opinion though.. why is it forming if he chooses to sound more foreign to get an attraction, if d magic works for him, then dt's a lucky catch,it should ve nothing to do with whether he is poor or nt, I'll be concerned only if he wants to fit in and the turnout end up being awkward than he been normal.why u may dislike dt, I fink it's just d adaptionist method of doing anything to be socially accepted as long as the reward is fast and pretty impressive. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:38pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif:Chiwetel Ejiofor came down to Nigeria at the age of 9 and left again at the age of 13, he was in Enugu at that time.. And also during one of his interviews, he said his parents made sure he was being brought up with his language, this was in answer to how he could speak Igbo that much.. Now you stay with some certain peeps with different language and certain differences, biko will there be a change or not?? this is not adopting accents or whatever, but its the natural law and answer my question o |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 10:38pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif:Now we're getting somewhere. His type of English is what I'd call Nigerian Queens English. That's the way his generation and that of our fathers were thought in school.. I'd suggest you should adopt that kind of English and don't try to copy the British. Let them discriminate all they want. At some point even the whites around you won't help but notice how fine you speak when you adopt the proper Nigerian Queens English. ![]() |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:39pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
dechandel:It doesn't necessarily mean he's faking it. If he infuses just few words while speaking, he doesn't have Brit accent then. Of course Professor Soyinka lived and studied in the UK for years and it's normal he should know how to pronounce many words or make a short speech with Brit accent. Note that for one to be said to have an accent, they must (or should) be able to make a long speech with their adopted accent, not just to infuse few words and that's it. I stand to be corrected. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:45pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Brandnew2:Another brilliant one. I am not interested in knowing Brit accent. I stay to my roots always. But what my argument has been is that Soyinka doesn't have Brit accent why many others here countered me on that. When Soyinka speak even an 11year old kid in Nigeria will tell whatever he said, but when a Brit speak many Nigerian young kids would find it hard to grasp. That was why I told others here to listen to Soyinka speak and tell if it's same when Brits speak; like the footballers and co Brits. I will opt for Soyinka's accent any day to that of the Brit, but I still maintain he doesn't speak like a Brit. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:51pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
dechandel:Lol! At the age of 9 and 13 one is still a teen, and that was still what I said at the onset, that unless you were born or spent your teen or youthful years in the UK, you can hardly adopt the Brit accent. Only 2 in 10 does so successfully in their early adult years like I also pointed out in my earlier comment. There are many Nigerian born kids, especially Yorubas, whose parents sent them to Nigeria to live for some years before they come back to Britain. They learnt Yoruba and Nigerian pidgin during their stay in Nigeria. But they never lost touch of their Brit accent, because they were born in the UK and that was the ever first language they adopted in life. I hope this answer the question. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 10:55pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Nobody says Wole Soyinka speaks exactly like the British. What I believe Dechandel is trying to say is that he's got a fusion of british in the way he speaks and she's right. That's why they call it Queens English. They thought us and we blended it with out own natural tongue to produce that unique type of English. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 10:57pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
faradexs09:Everyone has the right to speak in whatever way they want, I don't have a problem with that, and no one should too. My point is, their adopted accent is not same with that of Britain. Theirs could even be better than that of the Brits, but doesn't mean it's same. I may have used the wrong word fake, but I was only trying to drive home my point that Soyinka accent is different to that of Brits, I don't see the semblance after watching videos of him again to be sure. |

| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 11:07pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Bottomline is, it all has to do with the individuals background. Some people also work towards acquiring their desired accent either by exposure or environment. #My 2kobo |

Brandnew2:You know i had to check references to back up my point and this accent wahala isn't even british. what the normal Londoner speak is pure english this is what i just saw on an "English website" They claim the main brits accent is welsh, Scottish and the rest of them.. And they said the most simple accent to adopt is the English accent of which many peeps concurred to this!! Do you get my point?? |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by ronald4lif(m): 11:11pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
dechandel:Sorry, I may have missed your point there. I thought you were trying to say that for the fact that Chiwetel lived in the East and his parents taught them their language while growing up, he should have equally adopted the Igbo accent just like he did adopt that of Britain. Or you may want to rephrase your question again, sorry. |
| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 11:13pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
eddysernal:This is only a cheap generalization. Firstly, Not every one that speaks with a foreign accent is 'forming' as you asserted. I for one, don't feel too comfortable speaking with the Nigerian accent - this doesn't make me less of a patriot. I tend to express myself more when I switch to my prefered British accent. You don't have to blame me for this really. As a lad, I attended a seminary school that had English folks as teachers. At a very tender age, I was encouraged to speak the British way by the school. It was hardly boring and I so much loved the experience. Secondly, one doesn't necessarily have to travel out of the country to acquire a foreign accent. If this is some kind of notion, then it has to be dismissed. You can learn a foreign accent by mere watching foreign movies, attending a Nigerian school that recognises a foreign curriculum, engaging in conversations with foreigners etc. It's that simple. |

ronald4lif:You know its actually funny how the brits think their English accent is quite easy to pick up with. And somewhere in the world, someone else thinks one need to be born in the uk for him/her to get the english accent ![]() |

| Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 11:19pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
dechandel:Sure I do. I already explained this with a simple analogy about how an Hausa man and someone from the East would speak English as compared to a Lagosian. Same thing also applies to the Londoner and people from other parts of England. Their English is definately different. Haven't been to London myself so I can't judge but from what I gather from my brothers experience, he says the Scots speak the worst type of English cuz he went to Stratclyde. We all know the proper Londoner's English is quiet similar to what we speak. So Ronalds exposure now depends on what part of England he lives in. |
