First tin to note is dt the game of addiction dosen't just start,its a mind game and should be tackled in such regards...it is virtually impossible to change people.."virtually"...and is always best that d zeal for change dosen't spring up 4rm dose around us but frm within..we don't necessarily have to hate who we currently are..we only af to see d good in wt we ar changing into for sustained change..the best possible way to put off bad habits is to feed on good habits...if u are attracted to sometin,u are invariably distracted from another thing..to distract him from smoking habits,u should attract him to not-smoking habits....d act of monitoring him,checkin his pockets for weeds,restricting his financial base and access to these things(weeds) only serve as reminders to him and increases his desire for more...if u tink u changed him,u only made him up 4 high service..u changed him 4 urself...so he probably wouldn't do it around u...dosen't mean that is same wen u are absent...all u need do is always feed him wit less talks about wat he is doing(i.e smoking),y he shuldnt be doing them and more of what he actually should be doing (such as whr his peers are,his nearest and farthest future plans,his dreams nd goals.e.t.c...it is on this note assumed that u know thhis person very well)...all this would help steer that indepth man outta him..these actions will though not directly stop him from smoking but could serve as distractons from it..(that is,attracting him more to his "fons et origo"source and origin..who he always wanted to be b4 he started smoking)...thru all this...always remember that "the chances of changing people are slim because we all have 'will'..but we can help dem see reasons to change and assist them in the road walk"

First if all, this made me laugh... Quite hilarious! Secondly, I must commend your attention and keen interest in making sure he stops smoking. Either Igbo, Skunk cigarette etc... They're all BAD and very addictive. I also believe there is one spirit that controls this evil addiction, most people who gave up smoking had already caused a long term damages to their health - unless they stopped earlier enough and I strongly believe that the root of this bad habit is the kinds of company he keeps. Mind you, people who smokes are most likely to as well abuse alcohol and some other bad habits. Sit him down, explain to him how much he means to you, his kids, his families and how much he's still very much needed around. Constantly remind him about the effects of smoking as I am sure he's also aware that smokers are liable to die young. Try as much as possible to know how he spends his leisure times and importantly who he hangs out with. I'm sure you're vigilant enough to have caught him in the act, if he refuses to give up this bad habit, threaten to report him to his parents and see his reactions. Most importantly, pray to God to open his eyes and give him the will power to overcome the temptations.

To all the smokers reading this, give up smoking today and your lungs with thank you. I lived in the ghetto where smoking is seen as the norm and I've seen so many lives cut short due to this evil addiction and a countless are no longer sane.

Secondly, I am not in anyway addicted to weed. I smoke passively and socially not habitually.. I have been smoking for over 12 years now. At some point, I smoked regularly, then I grew up, graduated from school, got a job, took on more responsibility and so the time I have for cannabis reduced greatly. But I still smoke when I want to.

Finally, weed does not carry any permanent psychological effect because the active compound in Cannabis which is Tetrahydrocannabinol a.k.a THC wears off after a short while. Meaning the highness caused by weed does wear off after a short while. The active side effects of weed remains; Happy, Hungry, Sleepy, and Red eyes..

Let’s talk about weed. A real talk, not one of those weed-is-evil-and-no-one you-know-has-ever-used and if you do it’s only a matter of time before you’re living under a bridge pushing a shopping cart (which, I will point out, would be incredibly difficult for you given the amount of clothing and other detritus you seem to have accumulated.)

I want to write you the truth because you already know the “no one has ever used” speech is crap and if I leave you to figure everything out on your own you’ll just ask your friends -- whose sum of information comes from only slightly less clueless older brothers and sisters or the internet – which is a three car garage stuffed by hoarders. There may be some truth buried in the internet about weed, but you’d have to clean off ferret droppings to find it. Why I, or any other parent, would leave on your own to think this through is beyond me because you lack the resources to get real information. So here goes. Just say no. Just kidding. Ha ha. Little parental humor for you there.

Anyway, a doctor/writer friend of some renown pointed out to me once that it’s completely natural to want to change your mental state. He asked, “why do you think little kids spin around or swing or jump around? They want to play with cognition, it’s completely normal.” He has a point. That he said this to me while he was, himself, at the moment, intoxicated is not relevant.

So it’s not crazy to want to experiment with your cognitive state.

And I know you’re curious – you told me you’ve already seen a few kids get booted from college and your old school for smoking weedand getting caught. So you’re probably thinking, “why would they risk getting kicked out of school unless that weed thing is fun?”

And you already know I wrote a book with “marijuana” in the title, so you’re aware that I’ve inhaled.

So here’s the bottom line.

There are three kinds of marijuana smokers.

Visitors. There are the ones that smoke occasionally and for whom it’s a visit to a strange place. They may spend time giggling, and likely eat too much food, and end up a bit paranoid. Maybe even “wicked” paranoid, as we used to say. They may have fun physical sensations and get disoriented about time – but nothing too far beyond their experience to be frightening, and then, the next day they probably feel wiped out, kind of down and have minor memory issues. They may even say to themselves, “that’s what all the excitement is about?”

Then there’s the Regulars. These tend to be folks for whom weed is an anti-anxiety medication. It soothes their worries, they see the world differently when they smoke, and they maintain function. They smoke all the time – they may even “wake an bake” which means smoking first thing in the morning instead of coffee. With the exception of the smoker’s hack – a cough -- and their crappy memory-- you can’t usually tell who these people are because they are entirely functional. I’ve known hikers and small plane pilots and teachers who smoke regularly and seem to pull it off (though I wish I’d never met the pilot because I wasn’t trustworthy even with a popcorn popper when stoned but that story is for some other time).

But some of them convert to a third type.

Stoners. These are folks whose lives have slowed, and then stopped. For them, smoking weed results in gravity turning up -- it takes enormous effort for them to do anything, so they don’t. Ambition – even once fierce ambition -- evaporates and a creeping sadness replaces it. They sleep too much, hygiene sucks, they can’t remember what they did yesterday even though it’s exactly the same as what their doing today -- and they begin to look like a BEFORE photograph in some twisted makeover reality show.

Oh yeah, Bus-Riders. Okay, right, there’s a fourth type too -- for a small number of people, weed is just a bus stop on the quick road to harder, more immediately dangerous stuff, but you and I aren’t talking about heroin or cocaine or PCP or their latest derivatives because it’s the same as jumping in front of a car, only slightly less efficient. Oh, by the way, if I catch you with that stuff – or prescriptions – I’ll take you to the police myself, and when you get out you will find that I’ve taken everything out of your room including your door and bed – and you’ll slowly earn them back over the next year with meetings and drug tests. Doubt. Me Not.

OOooops, sorry, I got lost there in my own horrid little parental fantasy. Where were we? Oh yeah. Weed.

Unfortunately, before you inhale from your first joint, it’s impossible to know which group you’ll be in. Everyone thinks they’ll be a visitor the first time, but you never know. You’ll notice I haven’t even mentioned getting kicked out of school, driving when stoned, or other legal outcomes – just pay attention in your own world and you’ll notice the consequences yourself.

But of course, no matter what you decide. I’ll be here. If you ever need me, you just call and I’ll come get you, no matter where you are or how high you are.

And I’ll try to remember not to tweak you out by taking advantage of your paranoia when I get there.

A week ago, I smelled something like cigarette on him though I wasn't sure because I've never seen him smoke and he doent look like someone that smokes. As in, no trace of it in him. The smell was so strong that I was forced to ask him.

Me: Did you smoke?
Dele: No, why?
Me: Are you sure?
Dele: No I didn't
Me: But I smell something like cigarette in you

I was so convinced that he smoked but I had no strong evidence to prove that he smoked. The next day, in the afternoon precisely, I perceived that same smell on him which wasn't so in the morning. I was forced to ask again.

Me: You smoked today again. Don't even deny it.
Dele: *Speechless*
Me: I knew you smoked yesterday but I wasn't so sure of what I smelled in you. Today that same smell is on you and its so strong. So tell me, Do you smoke?
Dele: Yes but not cigarette.
Me: What?
Dele: Skunk (don't know if I got the spelling right)
Me: What's Skunk?
Dele: He explained though I didn't understand any of his explanation since I was hearing it for the first time.
Me: For how long have you been smoking Skunk?
Dele: For years. I wasn't like that before not until some circumstances pushed me into the street. Mumsy and everyone doesn't know I smoke. No one knows.

I was so happy that I thought it was that easy to stop. Right there I believed he had stopped smoking skunk. A day after our discussion, I saw him with something that looked like grinded grass or dry leaf wrapped in a small white nylon. I was so curious to know what it was, so I asked.

Me: What's this?
Dele: Thyme
Me: what kind of thyme is this?
Dele: Its Thailand Thyme. Its used in cooking soup and its also medicinal. When you use it to cook, you will like it.
Me: wow, I will like to try it. Can I have some?
Dele: (This time around, laughing out), its weed ooo.
Me: you mean Igbo?
Dele: Yes Igbo. Its also called Weed.
Me: (Not suspecting he smokes weed too) is it the same Igbo that is being mixed in hair creams?
Dele: Yes but not this one. If you want that one, I will get it for you. This one is being put into tea or chewed. Its medicinal.

Dele explained the medical benefits of taking weed (In tea or chewing). I never knew he smokes weed not until a day he went out with his friends, his eyes was bleeding blood like he was given blow in the eyes. His eye balls were out and scaring. This time around, I walked up to him and asked if he had been smoking and he said Yes. I was furious. He promised to stop smoking skunk but I was surprised when he told me it wasn't skunk this time around but weed. I was so down. He promised to stop again.

Just yesterday, I caught him smoking. He didn't know I was coming. I saw him smoking the white paper. I was heart broken. I was speechless. I ran inside. He came in, he knew I was angry but he didn't know what to say. Not long, he slept off. I searched d whole house. I found wraps of weed in a nylon. I also found some in the varandah under a chair. I threw them into the water closet and flushed them. I placed the wrapper closed to where he will see them. He woke up and saw the wrappers emptied. He asked and I told him I ate them all. He didn't believe but I insisted that I ate them all since that's what he likes doing too. Ever since then, I've been keeping to myself.

I want to help him stop his smoking habit. I don't want him to damage his health due to excessive smoking. I'm afraid if he continues this way, something bad might happen to his health.

Please fellow Nairalanders, I need him to quit smoking, how do I help him stop. Matured advice only.

To be honest I have never smoked skunk but I do know that it smells just like a skunk, hence the word SKUNK. They say it is a mello high, like a few glasses of wine, no hardcore stuff, which means it is the *good quality* unlaced with chemicals and other hardcore drugs. Your man is ok.
