I'm not saying he doesn't have a right not to mention his school, for what its worth, the person that asked that question is dim because telling him the school wont change anything as most funding is done by department and not the graduate school per se but still all this equivocation doesn't help our cause really.

Witches and wizards. Loool, Nigeria will never change. Same thing here, collected my visa today. Can u believe that my folks asked me to stop going out or visiting people and should never talk about my visa success because of the same witches and principalities nd powers. Its well. Truly, the reality of our nation has made us over-sensitive to 'inconsequential' things. But abeg o, aye wa o. cheesy

Brother, we are sons and daughters of different worlds. Our backgrounds differ. Not everyone will subscribe to a spill-it-all view, you know? And that is exactly my point. How your side na?

I'm not even slightly superstitious at all. I explained my reasons for withholding that information, but it appears the reasons are unfounded. Well I'm new here, so I'm glad there are people like Walspring in this forum who can amiably tell people why they believe they are in error. One never needs to be disagreeable to register a disagreement.

The name of the school is the University of Notre Dame, in Indiana. (As I said, the school itself is not the "unique" reason I didn't want to mention its name, and you've probably heard of the school before). This school generally fully funds all their Ph.D. admitted students, though their yearly intake is small.

Caveat: the school is Catholic in foundation so they are a bit conservative on some issues (e.g. LGBT), but none of these should be any problem for most Nigerians. People of various religions are able to study and research without any interference.

Other information that might be helpful: my chances were probably not so much about the school per se, but rather the particular program I'm applying to, which tallies with my work background of about 6 years, the GRE subject test I took (I did this because I'm changing disciplines. My BSc was in another discipline so I had to prove I can do something else), the independent research that I did for someone at a UK university, my research interests that tallied with the Notre Dame faculty research interests (I actually discussed back and forth on their research interests with them even before I applied), and most of all the grace of God.

I hope this information has been useful in any way whatsoever.

Cheers

Hey.
Relax man.
It's not that serious.
You have your reasons that's fine. It may not sit well with everyone but it's cool.

Move on and talk about other things.

For example, how you're going to survive on a student income for the next 4-5 years. Lol. Especially if you have a greedy girlfriend grin

Boss, you just have to be professional with it. The idea is that you should emphasize what the fund/grant can do to advancing your quest for excellence while at the same time foregrounding your qualities and qualifications that make you feel you should be considered for the fund. Be polite and never sound desperate. Professionalism matters.

The only sure easy I have written that is similar to this na my Fulbright application essay. Na mystiqme, slimmy05, ebdib, msnas and biggie sure pass on this.

Ripleus, I applied to Notre Dame too, but fear no gree me finish the application, plus their application fee was damn expensive, I think it was a $100 or so. Anyway goodluck(not Jonathan) to everyone awaiting admissions and funding decision. Cornell gave me conditional admissions no funding(my mathematics is not strong enough WTF), waiting to hear from Universities of Alaska, Wyoming and Oklahoma. I took Slimmy's advice and applied to East TN yesterday. Man must be funded. Let me revert to my ghost mode. #votenotfight...

you are a pained he-goat. who cares if you got a Phd position . the school aint even an ivy league. dont ever quote me again. go back to the beginning of this whole issh. you are the most mischievous for thinking people will spoil your chance of getting a visa. you nutter
dont you know hundreds of nigerians will be going to the embassy to get visa for Phd? how on earth will a VO identify you. You need help
lastly, i do not care about your school, i was only puzzled when u said people will spoil your chances undecided
ripleus:

You're either a mischievous person or you just like to misinterpret what people say. With your deduction above, I'm rather surprised that you say you're currently in school. I said I was told that I am the only Nigerian accepted for my PhD program this year, and each year they only accept about 2 to 3 people all over the world. I never said I was the only Nigerian who applied, or even that I was the only Nigerian accepted to any of the school's programs whatsoever.

How foolish does one have to be, to think that someone else believes he is the only Nigerian who applied to a school in a particular year? Out of the millions of Nigerians on earth? undecided undecided

From the start, this was about being identified by a VO based on all the personal details I have posted here, which I will also repeat to a VO on my interview day.

And I already clearly said it, it has nothing to do with the school or its name, the way you've all made a big deal out of it, but rather my personal details that will be revealed along with such information. You people will never let a matter rest.

Madam go and rest, and face your studies.

I will quote anybody whenever I like. It's not against Nairaland rules. It's you who needs to stop bullying people online.

With all your expletives, it is amusing to hear that you're educated to any extent. I'd expect such language from immature secondary school students grappling with expressions.

I wish you all the best! You can try and search for schools with late deadlines in your program of interest, and try to apply before April 1st if possible. Most final waitlists are fulfilled starting from April 1st (in preparation for the April 15 financial consideration decision deadline).

I'll strive to do that, but with the dollarization of everything, no be beans lol and the stress of going to OAU for transcript and bros i don search. Applied to four schools previously I'm adding two more schools. I'm searching for coded, generous school and slimmy was a big help. God bless our hustles and we'll all get to the top. My sincere gratitude to Ms Nas, Slimmy, SirRiddy(greatest gba gba) and a whole lot of other people that keep this thread working.

If you were truly in a graduate program, you'd know that the reputation of the program is what matters, and never even the name of the school. For my research interest, it is ranked third in the US, only after Brown University and Princeton.

Oh, I am broke ass and I am proud of it because I chose to do research rather than take a job (in case you haven't been told, money is not everything, at a point in time). And it is already opening doors for me. My future will tell about my choice. As for you, you should face your own future as well.
