I Envy The Yoruba Tribe! by OPCNAIRALAND(op): 2:19am On Apr 07, 2015
I envy the Yoruba tribe. Should there be a second coming to this world and there is an opportunity to ask God which tribe to belong, I will choose to come as a Yoruba. They are self-assured and hold themselves in high esteem. They believe they are wonderfully made and there is none like them. They are convinced they are the repository of the best decisions and judgments.  In their estimation, they are the ultimate reality, a trait psychologists call solipsism. All these manifest in their deportment and carriage.
However, loquacious and detestable is the PDP campaign organization spokesperson, Femi Fani – Kayode, we cannot but agree with him that amongst the tribes in Nigeria, the Yoruba is the most sophisticated. Sophistication here is defined in terms of western education and civilization. Femi once said that his late father, Chief Remi Fani-Kayode, who was born in 1920 and was called to the English Bar in 1945, was born in London when his grandfather was studying law in England. He further said his great grandfather left The University of Durham  in 1885 with a Masters of Arts degree. He was right. Abeokuta Grammar School, Abeokuta, founded in 1908 is the first secondary school in Yoruba land outside Lagos.
Its foundation principal was Mr. W. B. Kuye, a Yoruba University graduate. Bishop Alexander Akinyele, a Yoruba, who passed out from Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, in 1912 founded Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan, in 1913. Rev. Cannon  Moses Adeyemi, another Yoruba, graduated from Fourah Bay in 1911 and founded Ondo Boys High School, Ondo, in 1919. Whereas, few years ago in some parts of Nigeria it was difficult getting University graduates to teach in secondary schools. The Yoruba had lawyers before 1900 and have been litigants in regular courts since then.
They dominated the professions: Law, Medicine, Engineering, Teaching, Accounting, Surveying, Architecture, Insurance, Information Technology, Public Relations etc. They are deft in the political game and for this reason they have benefited from all governments whether they are in support of the government or not. Hidden under their frail mien are energy and an unflagging zeal to actualize their interests. Those who say the Yoruba are cowards should be informed that the Yoruba are cowards that win wars. They fought the government to a standstill after the June, 1993 annulment of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s victory without firing a gun. They had Chief Ernest Shonekan and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as Heads of State to the bargain. Only the cunningness of the Yoruba could loosen the grip of the Hausa-Fulani on power.
They gave in to Chief Obasanjo’s deception that he was their friend not knowing that he was their greatest enemy.  Within the twinkling of an eye he had made then effeminate. A Yoruba, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, with his craftiness has succeeded in forging a coalition of parties to present the most formidable opposition party in Nigeria’s history.  In the area of diplomacy and genuflection the Yoruba stand tall.
That is why they are at the head of almost all the mega churches in Nigeria. For example, Ajayi Crowder, Orimolade, Babalola, Ositelu,  Oschoffa (Yoruba in Benin Republic), Kumuyi, Akindayomi, Adeboye, Oyedepo, Ashimolowo, Odukoya, Joshua and Adefarasin are Yoruba. It is difficult to hold on to such large congregations for a long period without the Yoruba character. The Yoruba live harmoniously irrespective of differences in religion. Religious fanaticism and insurgency are alien in Yoruba communities. Yoruba Muslims and the Muslims in Ghana are the most peaceful in the world. Since Islam is peace they are thus the best Muslims in the world.  It is unwise to walk behind the Yoruba too closely. Two former presidential candidates, Abubakar Atiku and Ribadu, who did that, mourned their indiscretion afterwards. The Yoruba in their parties voted for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan flying the flag of a different party.
Among the Yoruba we have the sophisticated and the stereotype. The sophisticated will stand for truth and justice at all times and they aren’t given to tribal and religious considerations. The stereotype is the run – of – the – mill with a parochial disposition.
The self-righteousness of the Yoruba can therefore be partly understood from their background. It was, therefore, not surprising that Dr. Christopher Kolade, Nigeria’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, could berate President Jonathan for his failure to curtail corruption and insurgency   while turning a blind eye on Chief Obasanjo’s misdemeanors when he served as president. In fact, Dr Kolade undertook a mission so undiplomatic from the U.K to Nigeria to chair the fundraising for the Obasanjo Presidential Library. Deploying coercion and undue influence, about N4billion was squeezed out from public companies and government agencies in a single day for the project. Chief Obasanjo had since appropriated the library to himself.
Dr. Kolade also overlooked the sacking of Odi and Zaki Biam towns ordered by his tribesman, Chief Obasanjo.   An act which is one of the worst inhumanity of man to man since Cain slew Abel.  Many Yoruba had discountenanced the alleged corrupt dealings of Asiwaju Tinubu aired by the Africa Independent Television. They exonerated Tinubu of complicity and asked his traducers to go to court. a served the Yoruba more than any other tribe.
What the stereotypes should know is that the states of Ondo and Ekiti are now standing alone. The people in these states believe they have played second fiddle for too long.

That sounds like what a chest beating Igbo would write, not an intellectual Yoruba. I noticed how the author smuggled in OBJ "deceiving" the north to get power, but conveniently left out why Illorin is ruled by an Emir, not an Oba. The author should leave empty chestbeating to the Igbos, it is not typical of a bright mind.

We are proud to beat our chest because everybody thought we would be put to extinction by giving every Igbo man 20£. Everybody, hates us yet they can't resist having us as tenants because we actually gave them the money used in completing the house. We beat our chest so hard, because we have a brave heart, hustle very hard for our women not the other way round. We beat out chest and we will keep beating it because they thought that we would remain servitudes after the war but today we live in the best of houses.
In my next twenty generation, I will come as an Igbo man. Igbo Kwenu! kwenu!! Kwezuo nu ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Young man go and keep quiet and don't follow that half baked Kayode speech. Yorubas are NOT the most sophisticated in education. At least history and our present generation proves so.

Always try to apply sense before you talk, when it comes to dirtiness after the Hausas you are the next unless there is another meaning to it,maybe Godliness.
The clean thing your clan knows how to do is spewing hatred, fraud,Production of counterfeit goods and leaving your Enugu slums to swarm to yorubaland.for your daily bread.
