it's rather unfortunate n appalling dat an Oba culdnt have envisaged de ramifications of de words dat proceed frm his mouth, atleast by virtue of his occupation of dat exalted stool. the Yoruba nation hav no right watsoever to blame the Igbos for their reactions or to dictate to them how to react in de face of such unwarranted n witless threat! One wuld expect dat they atleast show their acclaimed enlightenment n civility by holding Oba Akiolu responsible for his careless utterance and duely punish him for such unbecoming behaviour n for bringing such infamy, shame n disgrace to the sanctity of de stool by unsitting him! BTW,wat bizness has an Oba with mingling so deep in politics?!!! nigerians shuld learn to hold ppl responsible for their actions! Oba or no Oba NONSENSE!!!!! RUBBISH!!!!! dat's wat i expected of dis Oodua of a ppl...nt coming here to reel out jaundiced history dat no one really cares abt |

ekiloui:And these insults, degradation and mockery is done by only one tribe? I am not a tribalist and if you can be patient and go through some of my posts you will know I'm not. However, if you just for a minute read the article all over with an open mind then you'll maybe see things a bit from my perspective. |

Terenceike:I am a student of history and history is very subjective depending on the chronicler. If your opinions about the Nigerian Civil War was formed by reading "There was a country" and "Half of a Yellow Sun" and listening to relatives of "Biafran" soldiers who fought in the war, you can't claim to know the entirety of what happened. Some people fought and died on the other side believing they were doing the right thing and defending their country. Believe it or not, history has two sides: what the chronicler has said, and what really happened (the truth). We really need to forgive and forget and move on in this country. It is almost 50 years since the war was over. I don't engage in abuse so I'll let the "stupidity" comment slide. |

Ymodulus:Are you serious? So if one's landlord threatened ones life I shouldn't take him or her to court? Secondly as a Nigerian everyone had a right to live any where!!! It's not a favour! the thing is the fact you think it's a favour to allow any tribe live in any state already shows your logic is flawed from inception!!!! I won't bother trading words with you because rather than make a single point you tried to show Chimanda as being biased without dispassionately looking at the points she raised |

BIAFRA 1- 1967-1970. The Northern region and the South-West combined to defeat the South-East. BIAFRA 2- March 2015 election. The North in collaboration with its junior partner, the South-West collaborated to defeat the South-South. The north and southwest always see elections as war and "do or die", therefore all is fair. I feel ashamed that a first class oba and and ex-DIG of a pan Nigerian institution (NPF) should make such an abominable remark in a republic and some elites want us to wish it away. Good luck to Nigeria. |

I just recently watched Chinamanda's film and was so moved that I researched the Biafran war. This finally took me to the origin of the matter - the first Nigeria coup. Chinamanda is obviously biased and may be prejudiced by her people's ordeal during the war but she did not fully represent the matter in its true light in her movie. Please feel free to research this. I feel the Oba said a prayer which I say regularly " the people who do not want me to succeed will not succeed". Any inconvenience is deeply regretted. |

But I can assure you this, if you, rilwan akiolu, your APC goons army, your APC loyal OPC faction or any other group do something funny in lagos, well, I dare you to try it. Some peeps talk Others walk the talk Am praying you in particular grow ballsy enough to take it to the streets instead of forming internet strongman. |

Ymodulus:Ur comment is nice, but u re looking @ it from only one angle. If igbos shld look inwards and find out y they re always attacked, don't u tink other tribes shld also look inwards nd find out y they attack igbos? For e.g in 2011, the north voted massively for GMB, I neva heard them criticized or mocked. And if Igbos are always trying to dominate, it shld not be a crime except they do it unlawfully. We hav seen d incidents in the north where dominance was shown violently, nd they re not even criticized half as much as I am seeing now. |

"l am yet to see a man that will keep quiet when his territory is been invaded with impunity. Oba Akinolu, the Oba of Lagos, AFONJA was a Yoruba man, and a General in the Oyo Army. He was made the Commanding Officer of Ilorin Outpost. He was an over ambitious man who wanted to be King at all cost and he knew there was no way he could defeat Alaafin of Oyo Army, so he gathered Fulani settlers under Mallam Alimi together to help fight Alaafin, yes the Fulanis helped him to defeat Alafin's Army but he was never made king. That was how the Yoruba people lost Ilorin a prominent Yoruba town to Fulani Emirate through this treacherous act, probably forever. TODAY, LAGOS IS THE NEW ILORIN. JIMI AGBAJE IS THE NEW AFONJA, WHILE THE IGBOS ARE THE NEW FULANI. Come Saturday, Lagosians should not allow history to repeat itself. Oloju ko ni la oju sile ki talubo o wo. Eko oni baje" |

oluamid:To answer your question. Yes, by 1 tribe...I won't mention, but u know who. I'm not a tribalist either...some of my best friends are Yorubas and Hausas. Infact I was born in lagos and live in Abuja now...I'm very exposed to those cultures even more than my own. But NL is gonna turn me into a tribalist if I continue to read the crap that people who are barbaric keep posting here. |
| Re: Chimamanda Adichie's Article On The Oba Of Lagos Saga by MaximalC: 5:08pm On Apr 11, 2015 |
Beautifully rendered Chimamanda. The Oba should have apologized instead of people trying to justify or diminish the intent behind his remarks. Traditional rulers are supposed to be fathers. A father is not supposed to make such utterances. Very childish and cruel indeed. |
| Re: Chimamanda Adichie's Article On The Oba Of Lagos Saga by oluamid(m): 5:12pm On Apr 11, 2015 |
ekiloui:Well it's easier to remember slights against one's tribe than slights coming from one's tribe against another, I can relate with that. But tribalism is not tribe specific and members of most Nigerian tribes esp Yoruba and Igbo are guilty of opening threads with the sole purpose of abusing another tribe. It will be wrong to ascribe this to only Yorubas (Yes, that's the tribe you meant). It's like playing the ostrich. My advice: you need to develop a thick skin for all the tribalism you'll come across on NL. Don't let a few people make you hate a tribe of millions. I'll leave you with this: there are only two types of people in the world. Good people and bad people. And both can come from any tribe, Yoruba or Igbo. |

ideykwum:Was almost lauding ur comment till I saw wat followed. Everything, socially constructed is always based on bias. I am sure you knw some igbos are obnoxious, particularly the illiterates and this is evident in all ethnic groups. Wat she wrote was not of much surprise for me. Wat should she have written if not an article to defend her people, she is an artist, a literary writer and not a scientist for crying out loud. If she had said otherwise, I am sure this same u would lambast her for being withdrawn from her tribe because of the money she has made. The igbo gal in her won't let her be objective. And talking about Nigerian history, she actually has the achebe version which can be faulted by others. The igbos keeps crying they were killed during the biafran war. Were westerners not killed? Were northerners not killed in the east? Agreed, you guys had the most casualty but it was a war, it was meant to end with a winner and a vanquished. Ojukwu was not ready for the war even those that were close to him attested to that fact. Those that warned him insistently were killed on charges of attempted treason, so what is the cry about? Ojukwu had his faults while Gowon did have his, to even think of it Gowon is a northern Christian. Before the secession, minority groups in the south were asking for help from the federal government claiming they were not igbo. If I may even ask, why did Ojukwu surrender via effiong? If he was fighting a just cause, he should have fought it to the death and become a martyr. Sentimental comments are allowed but that wouldn't stop an igbo gal being my very close friend. she has her tribal faults and I do have mine. When I tell her unreceptive treatments I receive from igbos, she doesn't defend them and when it comes to Yoruba folks, I am not left out but that is not to say I am blind to crass attitude from both sides. |
