I am not advocating for Subsidy. That's a last option for countries that can't refine or their refineries are not meeting local demand.
Why Subsidy? We have four refineries, why cant they work? If govt can't run them, then sell controlling shares to the organised private sector and let them run the refineries. If my memory serves me right, OBJ did sell the refineries but NASS incited Yaradua's govt to reverse it. DIezeani promised Nigerians that the "original manufactures" will carry out TAM and put them back in shape. We spent $Billions, yet we are still at ground zero.

Look at the Nigerian budget and the frivolous expenses of the state/ presidency, Different MDG's, the NASS etc. We can do better than these and channel these billions to tangible things that will benefit the common man.
Subsidy is the last option for countries that can't refine or meet local demand? huh Oga that's not why subsidy was put in place o.

Even if government curbs the excesses in its spending selling petrol at N40/l will still be unachievable, for that to even happen it means there will even be a larger subsidy than what we have in place now.

Any talk about reducing petrol to N40 now is unrealistic at best.

If he can get our refineries to start producing at even half of their capacity, will be a good start. 75-100% capacity equals and exceeds our local demand. Dangote's refinery will come on in 2018, and triple our local demand. We can then be exporting the excess to our neighbors and be generating income for the country.

We are talking about reducing fuel to N40/l in 2015 or the near future. I say that is unrealistic. Even with 142 refineries in the USA they don't buy petrol for the equivalent of N40/l.

If this happens, I will hero worship him. I currently spend N30,000-N45,000 on fuel per month and I don't find it funny. Imagine that been reduced to N8,000 per month for me.

It better be true oo. David-west you have risen my hope. Buhari will forever become an hero if he reduces pump prices and fix our electricity.

Fix these two and others will auto fix themselves. Inflation will reduce, companies will make more money meaning their workers will automatically make more money too thereby reducing the proverty level. Reduce the property level and people will have more money to eat healthy thereby increasing our life span.

This will also lead to the growth of small and medical scale enterprises which will also lead to more empployment.

GOD, it be better be true.
wao... i like the trend of the ripple effect.

God should bless any leader that blesses Nigeria and Makes life better for us.

In figuring out whether the cost of a product can come down, you look at the cost components. According to PPPRA the breakdown of the price of fuel based on average Platts’ data for December 29, 2014 showed the following:

Landing Cost - $644.92 per metric ton or N82.41 per litre (cost and freight (N72.40K), traders’ margin (N1.28K), lightering expenses (N3.91K), Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA charge (N0.67K), financing (N0.35K), jetty/depot thru’ put charge (N0.80K) and storage charge (N3.00K)).

Distribution margin - $121.22 per ton, or N15.49 per litre (retailers (N4.60K), transporters (N2.99K), dealers (N1.75K), bridging fund (N5.85K), marine transport average (N0.15) and administrative charge (N0.15K))

Total cost to about $766.14 per ton, or N97.90.

Therefore, price of fuel can be reduced if we refine enough for our local demand because aside from the cost of the product, some of the components especially charges by middlemen and agencies and businesses can be removed or reduced.

Am not an expert, just trying to analyze this in simple terms. I don't expect it to get to N40 immediately, but once you reduce the price by stopping importation of fuel, you can now go further to closely analyze the actual cost of producing fuel in Nigeria, and it could possibly go down some more.

If you are in a vehicle and the driver is driving like someone possessed, shout "Change!" #ChangeNigeria.

When somebody is trying to jump a queue at either the bank or the fuel station or the ATM stand shout "Change". #change Nigeria#

When an Electricity official cuts your light unjustly shout "Change". # Change Nigeria#

If someone is answering a phone and lies about his/her location, shout "Change"#

If you are a friend to a man/woman who goes to meet another woman/man and deceives his/her wife/husband that he/she is traveling on an official duty, whisper "CHANGE!"

When a fuel attendant tries to short-dispense fuel into your car remind him about "Change " #Change Nigeria#

Change is here. #changenigeria4better.

Change starts when you like & share this.
Thanks. The one that interests me most is the use of loud speakers by mosques and churches. Government and the people must act against noise pollution as quickly as possible.

barcanista:
oga you don't just wake up to cut down or increase the pump price of pms. This has to do with increasing or decreasing the % of government for the subsidy(as the case may be). In the petroleum sector, we have the problem of cabals that import the product and charges the government. These cabals work in tandem with civil servants and other public servants that are in their payroll to ensure that they get their way. If government is to cut the pump price, it means it has to increase %earnings of the cabals to make up for the citizens. Now considering the fall in global oil price and how it affected our revenue, and the effect it will have on our relative scarce resources, do you think increament in the subsidy is feasible?

The only solution is total removal BUT you have to put paliatives in place to reduce the resultant pains(whicj will be temporary) and then build refineries to be run by private firms or jointly wt government(considering how we poorly manage our own). The problem here is that the same cabals will do all within their powers to sabotage the effort to build refineries. Also, the public income may not be able to service it, the option left will be loan-which comes with its resultant effect. What happens "if" the money is mismanaged or diverted?

Akiika!

Importantly, how feasible will this be considering the numerous "unrealistic" social programs/proposals of the Buhari incoming administration?

Re: Buhari Will Reduce Fuel Price To N40 Per Litre — David-West by ogb5(m): 1:34pm On Apr 14, 2015
These janjanweeds and their stupid promises.

At 50 dollars per bbl crude oil comes to 10,000 naira per bbl. This is equivalent to about 63 naira per litre of crude oil.

So the Janjanweeds will take a litre of crude oil at 63 naira, refine it and sell it at 40 naira ?

Who will pay for the difference in cost between the cost of the raw material and finished product. Who bears the cost of the refining cost and distribution costs, what about profits for all the people along the value chain from the crude oil stage to the point where the fuel is sold at the pumps.

Interesting submission however when matters of the cost of petrol come up I usually look around to see if/where other nations are experiencing the same thing because crude oil which is the source of petrol is an internationally traded commodity, it is subject to an international trend in a manner of speaking. How come in other countries without any form of subsidy in place and where they have fully functional local refineries they are not able to buy petrol for $0.02/litre (~N40)?

Even with the drop in world crude prices I think that figure is very unrealistic.

People should disabuse their minds from these unrealistic expectations. Even if Buhari magically repaired all our refineries in a fortnight there is no way he will achieve this feat.

I total agree with you that N40/litre is unrealistic, talkless of anytime soon, unless GMB plans to continue the subsidy program, and pay more than the present administration is paying...

My comments are just suggesting actions and policies that can help in reducing the cost first.
