That is the normal thing to do, most visitors to the palace sits on the Rug except on special occassion. Even at that they will first greet him bending down before sitting on the chair if they provide one for the visitor.

As a sign of respect in accordance with the tradition in that part of the country, we the Igbos can't try that.. Not that we lack respect but our tradition requires that all men are equal and the traditional rulers have just a little edge over his cabinet and then his subjects,

For instance the king of my town can't take what belongs to another man forcefully, why? Because he doesn't have that power.

The king of my town can't just wakeup and make a decree, without consulting not just the cabinet but the commoners, the day he tries it, his days on the throne are numbered.

Anytime I see Emir lamido Sanusi in the Royal Robe, all I can think of is a talented brain that has gone to waste. embarassed

He's an intelligent and very eloquent man. Heck! This man once called the shots at First Bank and CBN as well as many other firms.

Now, all he does is sit and expect people to pay homage to him at his palace. embarassed lipsrsealed
All his traditional roles must be very boring and not intellectually challenging. From high profile board meetings and formulating economic policies to this. . . . How does he cope undecided

Sad!

You are so right. So correct in fact. I'm sure if it was possible for Sanusi to wait till he way maybe 70 years old before ascending the throne, he would have done just that. But if he desired the throne, he had to become sieze the opportunity and become the Emir right after the demise of the former Emir. It's not the sort of position people can wait for you to be done with all earthly conquest before you now come and aswer their call.

Atiku has got humiity! But seriously, this tradition has got to stop in the North. Seat will be available, yet people wil be expected to sit on the ground. Even in their homes, only the Dad and important guests sit on the couch!

Hehehehehe! I used to think like this some months ago until someone explained the whole idea to me. You see the first bank, CBN, foreign exposure, everything that has made the Emir what he is today was done to prepare him for the throne, he was 'built' to lead and THINK for his people, that my brother is a great "intellectual" task.

But SLS life is more than seating in one place waitn for visitors to come then bow to you. For God sake this is an intellect wasting, a very learned Nigerian wasting. Respect to the throne anyway but SLS can do better.

I do not agree with you.

If that was the case, why wasn't the late Emir Ado Bayero and other prominent Northern Emirs given the same "exposure" before they ascended the throne?

While trying to remain modest and not say too much about myself, I have sat in a few board meetings with him, the most recent a few weeks before he was made the head of CBN, so I know the stuff he's made of. He is not just talk without substance. He's very grounded and intellectually sound upstairs.

I knew he was a Prince but I never thought he was a serious challenger to the throne.

It's just sad to see him "waste" this way. undecided

He hasn't been reduced to anything - he just left the limelight for the throne of his ancestors.

At the end of the day, he can still pull a few strings from behind the scene, like Ahmadu Bello.

Ahmadu Bello ruled Nigeria as an Emir, with Tafawa Balewa as the face of the government.

That's even far better than making everything too conspicuous.

Wrong! Wrong!!. The former Emir of Kano late Ado Bayero was sitting atop major multinational companies and investments as a silent but very influential board member one of which was Intels Gruop which is co owned by Atiku. Ado Bayero was present in serious Board meetings. You might not know this because everything musn't go to the press. In likewise manner Emir Sanusi would definately be towing that line too. The throne attracts even wider businesses and contacts instead of being restricted to only one place say only Banking. He would still be contributing his vast knowledge in the business world even though sitting on that throne.

My brother, you have no idea of how Northern Oligarchy works, the late Emir, was a banker, member of parliament, and also a diplomat (he was an ambassador). I know Sanusi is sound, in fact all Northern leaders since independence are very smart.

If you doubt my argument about exposure, look at the educational background of the most important Northern leaders we've had since independence. Better still why do you think there's a very high level of illiteracy there? It's a long story, don't let me derail this thread.

That he (Ado Bayero) sat on the board of different companies doesn't mean he brainstormed with other board members or argued or disagreed on certain decisions.

He could have been just an investor and maybe one of the beneficial owners or ultimate beneficial owner(s). That's if the shareholders' identity was not masked using bearer shares.

Some individuals are appointed as board members solely because of the credibility, prestige, money as well as business contacts such individual will bring to the company. Heck! There are directors of several companies that have not attended a single board meeting yet they get paid dividends, etc.

I don't see Emir Lamido Sanusi dropping his royal robe for his three piece suit ever again nor going through flip charts or slides and I'm sure the late Emir Ado Bayero never did that either. He will probably spend most of his time reading annual reports undecided

I wonder on the ignorance of people till date.

The average nigerian beleives as a northerner, you are not fully educated but just a waste and happen to be rich

Average nigerian is not exposed as far as am concerned and this is trully a pity.when they see or hear of an achiever that its a northerner, they look for excuse to undermine the person.
That's y its easy to schock them

However, am still of the opinion that northerners lead superficial lives, they are selfish, materialistic, arrogant, wicked and greedy
