A freelance programmer working directly from the internet net can earn several times more than that, especially if he has experience and ability.

It is not uncommon to come across a programmer who can charge $15,000+ per project or more - but like I said you need to know your stuff to be able to command such money.

my boss knows am on Nairaland , however mentioning pay scale is a tricky and touchy topic. it cost me nothing to tell you, you can personally i'd tell you not on a public forum. even of my staff had an article written on him on techcabal a very touching topic, and the company we worked for was mentioned, it was a serious issue. 120/130k hmmmm that's not bad it depends on your experience and relevance to the company. but then again you would get better in Konga/Andela but i never take jobs because of how much i can earn but what type of experience i can gain from the company. If not i'd be working for Andela. Experience with hardcore tools matter to me, you can never have enough money anyway.

funny enough, i asked a similar question on a thread recently and got only one reply, i was curious cos then i was looking for a job (in strictly programming) (since everybody no fit be co-founder ), but only one person replied on the thread, i had to go out to search for d answers myself.
I did about 4 interviews in some core tech coys(mostly some of our super-startups) and the average salary they offered me was 120 to 130k. Although i consider myself an intermediate programmer and i do mostly web programming (php, JS stack, and small python and java).

I personally don't know why people like hiding their salary or where they work(it's not a must u state it exactly) cos if u visit sites like glassdoor, payscale, indeed and co, u will see d average salary someone with your skill-set earns, but here in 9ja, everyone behaves as if they are working for EFCC or CIA when asked about their salary or work details online! smh

Don't mention where you work just state what you do, yrs of experience and your pay. I see no harm in that. I'm a .NET Developer also do front end work using Angular, jQuery, D3. After all deductions my take home is 102,000 monthly. I'm a fresher though this is my first job started about a month ago.

Modified: I also have some PP. A contract sort of with a coy, it doesn't pay every month though but every 3 months. Currently it pays me a little above 240,000 every 3 months. I don't do much here once I setup the app, all I do is to click a few buttons every 3 months.

Was a miracle... My regular pay was 60k per month because I was employed as a web developer... But I topped my skills I started developing apps and softwares & was promoted .senior software developer... But I still want to leave by May, n focus on my startup.... They sometimes pay half....
If you feel you are being underpaid but you still gain more from your company I think you should stay, but still apply for other job positions with higher pay.

Widen your reach, think whole of the internet, and the exchange rate makes working outside for people outside Nigeria more lucrative. If you are a programmer with ability and creativity you can canvass people abroad. USA or Europe. Obviously the name of the game is customer services plus a decent portfolio.

If you don't believe that kind of money is possible go to sites like Guru.com and freelancer.com speak to some of the programmers who are canvassing for clients their and people who are looking for programmers to handle projects for them then get back to me.

Remember this is freelance not a monthly salary paying job. each client you receive will be different, you are self employed. Just have a look around the net to see what I am talking about. Then if you doubt you have what it takes to make that kind of money, simply upgrade your skills with a pro online course. The money you spend will be well worth the investment if you are a programmer at heart and the certificate providers are reputable and accredited.

You're absolutely right tho, but then again the topic is about Nigerian tech industry I haven't seen anyone earn that much in Nigeria

My brother the world is our oyster.

Why can foreign companies and business come to Nigeria on and offline make huge money from us, and we cannot do the same. That is a lopsided arrangement. If you feel we can offer a top quality services to people (or you are willing to train), I don't see why Nigerians cannot benefit from the world wide web in its entirety.

There is 2 main areas to consider in my humble opinion:

1. Continuous training and upgrading of your skills and your businesses abilities
2. Be obsessed with top notch customer satisfaction

Since this is programming and we know that programming is intrinsically tied to the internet, we defeat our selves by just focusing on one geographic location when we can focus on a customer base of almost 3.5 billion people.

If you focus on building a good reputation online mainly by doing great jobs and not taking on 'dog projects' that have no real market value. You will be perceived as a go to man by foreign and Nigerian clients.

Dont mind me o jare, I was just teasing. I am an entrepreneur and I have partner companies. Due to the salary scale of programmers in Nigeria, I will rather not work for any company on employment level (and have never done so till date).

I am freelancing so I can't provide any information but what I have seen so far, the salary for a programmer / developer in Nigeria is in the range of 100,000 - 200,000 Naira

This amount depends on your skill sets and experience.

With other sectors like government ministries, government agencies and organisations paying less than or equal amount, one can draw a conclusion that developers / programmers are not underpaid like that in Nigeria.

I do know that when compare with other international software companies like Google, this amount might be smaller than what they pay.

Please we need more information on this topic.

Enterprise apps are more profitable..
But you should already have a foundation in web development

well as for me i'll prefer he moves to java(enterprise or whatever it's called) straight, cos there's no time my brother. Even me, up till today i'm still regretting why i didn't take my java serious(even though i had all d opportunity to learn it) and rather chose web.(my candid opinion sha.)

Likewise note that u can achieve with java what u'ld achieve with php(or web as it's being called) and after u've learnt java(very well) it'll be easy to 'cross-over' to php since they both belong to d same c-like language family.

i swear me-sef dey envy dem oh, i tried to lay my hands on some of kudaisi's Qs but it was then i realised that i really need to sit up and learn d 'hard' languages, cos my brother, there's no short-cut to success oh. I also realized that with d current stream, one just has to upgrade and differentiate himself from d crowd cos very soon all these web-development will be so easy(of cos to some extent), especially wit d help of all these CMSes, plugins, libraries n co, that there won't be much value attached to someone who parades himself as a web dev(as we have it in 9ja here).
