President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari was one of the military men who masterminded a military coup in December 1983. Democratically elected President Shehu Shagari was overthrown in the coup.It should be recalled that Gen. Buhari was the General Officer Commanding (GOC),Third Armored Division of Jos at the time of the coup. Following the coup, General Tunde Idiagbon was made the Chief of General Staff.Buhari at his first press conference in 1984 as Head of State said a the coup was carried out because of total negligence of 1979 Constitution by the then civilian government and its corrupt practices. Gen. Buhari ruled Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985.

Ironically, the system of government he helped demolished, is now the system of government that have brought him to limelight once again. Hopefully this time, he'll turn things around and make this country great again. |
