That is arrant nonsense, and a reason why many Nigerian programmers are poor and remain poor. I once had that thinking, therefore I became extra good - in fact too good for my own liking (I am a web-developer that can use multiple technologies - all the way from asp, perl, php, asp.net, MEAN STACK, at the same time a software developer (whether windows/mac osx), and also with a very strong foot in native mobile application development) - all that one na just tales by moonlight, yeah, it did not help me due to that arrant nonsense thinking of - if you are good.

Yeah, even if you are good - the naija companies will offer you nonsense salary. The last company that tried to employ me wanted to pay me 100k / month.

Well, na so we see am o.

The summary of all this is that - the programmers that make money the most in Nigeria ARE NOT EMPLOYED ON A MONTHLY SALARY.

Dude is confused.
Nigeria is not yet riped for what u are thinking.
You can only get a fat pay as a salary in the developed world. Those getting good pay in.Nigeria are those working in IT dept of multi nationals, banks, paralstatals etc.
Guy ,If you are self employed and good, jobs will get to you if you know your way..What's in vogue now which you can make pay.Is designing a web portal payment links for schools, organizations and institutions and where students etc get registered and pay there fees or forms fee....If you are good and mobile.app...u make money from app sales, ads etc.

I'm guessing this Q is aimed at Naija based programmers? I'm curious too.

Are you dismissing the fact that he doesn't need a certificate to be a good programmer, and earn more ?

someone also pointed out that he would need the cert so the company can give him chance to showcase his skills of which he will be paid monthly salary, in your last post you also said the programmers that earn money most in Nigeria are not employed on a monthly salary, which I think its true.
On the issue of certification do you think it's absolutely necessary even for freelancer or an entrepreneur

***I had to drop out from my university twice cause my computer lab was like a secrete spiritual room covered in dust* Naija style

You guys all have your point sha. But seriously, it is the freelance people that make money the most out of programming in Nigeria. Freelancers that are good, and know what they are doing. Whether school apps, or bank applications or whatever. . . .and certification has nothing to do with this. I aint got any cert in programming, but I pull considerable weight (know what I am saying?).

Dear Programmers & Other Techies,

Please state the kind of company you work for and where it's located, the kind of work you do there, and how much you're paid.

This information will help programmers like you and employers like me a lot during salary negotiations. Thanks!

Hello Seun,

To get better response from programmers challenge them dont be too direct. Just write out different job responsibilities and roles and ask how much they will accept as minimum salary. Also ask for their experience level to justify the salary requested.

Am sure u ll get better output.

Cheers

thewebcraft, for some reasons best known by nairaland bot, my reply got deleted, Sir I'm really interested in Php and Python, but my preference would be whatever language you're proficient in. I just want to be under the tutelage of a professional. Thanks a great deal!

we shouldn't reveal such informations for security purposes... sorry seun but you pay a programmer by his worth.
I beg to disagree, rather you pay a programmer by YOUR worth. No one can pay people for what they truly worth and that's why Seun is asking for assistance, to help in negotiation.

Hello Seun, I want to report the injustice of one of your moderators in the Auto section who banned me arbitrarily and unjustly for no good reason under the pretext that it is a scam. Do check my post and go through it, I am a legal law abiding citizen and I will not accept such witchhunting for simply making an advert just like every other registered lawful user of your forum. I want you to urgently look into this matter. The SUV is very much available for verification and inspection, I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear. I suspect the moderator that banned me has a sinister motive and probably has a stake in a similar car posted somewhere on the site but my price is more competitive than theirs or for some other vile reason, hence the reckless unjust ban. Address this matter speedily for the sake of the fairness and integrity of Nairaland.

There is no such thing as average salary. It all depends on your skillset. Someone like me would command as much as 1 million in some companies and other companies may offer 300-400k so it depends on your skillset and the company hiring you.
