That's done as part of the Black Heritage Festival (the carnival is just one aspect of the festival). It usually features masquerades from all over Nigeria, but the focus this year was on masquerades from Badagry.

I couldn't attend this year's event, but I can show you pictures from previous editions.

In the past, the groups that attracted the most attention at the carnival were the Campos Square, Lafiaji and Gelede (traditional masquerade) groups, but in recent years, in my opinion, they've been overshadowed by LOCOMOTION, which came second in 2013 and first in 2014 (I expect them to also win this year).

Locomotion is usually made up of four sections - the main drum section, the horn section, talking drummers, crazy dancers and regular dancers.

I've still got tons more pictures to post.

Virtually every district of Lagos had their own carnival group (eg, Ikoyi, Ikeja, Ogba, Ketu) and I got pictures of all of them. I also have pictures from within the Tafawa Balewa Square and pictures of the water regatta which was staged on Five Cowrie Creek (it had jet skis, colourful boats, etc). I'll post them tonight.


Unfortunately the children's carnival didn't hold this year (because of the elections) so those innovative floats like the moving bumble bee, the spider, the moving telephone, etc, were absent.
