I just read up on Edward written and I was amazed at how he got a PhD in physics without a degree or masters in it. According to wikipedia, [color=navy]Witten attended the Park School of Baltimore (class of '68), and received his Bachelor of Arts with a major in history and minor in linguistics from Brandeis University in 1971. He published articles in The New Republic and The Nation. In 1968, Witten published an article in The Nation arguing that the New Left had no strategy.[4] He worked briefly for George McGovern's presidential campaign. McGovern lost the 1972 election in a landslide to Richard Nixon. Witten attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison for one semester as an economics graduate student before dropping out.[4] He returned to academia, enrolling in applied mathematics at Princeton University in 1973, then shifting departments and receiving a Ph.D. in physics in 1976 under David Gross,[4] the 2004 Nobel laureate in Physics. [/color] According to the above, he got a degree in history and linguistics at 20. Then he applied for mathematics at 22. Then shifting departments, he received a PhD at 25!! In physics!! Can someone please explain how the hell he achieved that? Because I have similar goals in mind, at this rate, one can get as much as four PhDs in mathematics, engineering, physics . . . . in just twelve years Show me the way.  Cc. don't be surprised, even in Nigeria, you can get a Phd certificate with only secondary school education. |

US universities do not require masters as a prelim to PhD. All you need is either a BA or BS. |

Ibsgal:[color=navy]well, I do know that. But this man did not have a PhD in physics previously. Does this mean that PhDs are not tied to the courses which are undertaken at Bachelor's degree level? For instance, if one had a Bs in computer science, can that same person acquire a PhD in music using the above process? Without going for a BA in music? [/color] |
