Manu promises to beat Brazil in World Cup

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has promised his team will beat Brazil in their U20 World Cup clash in New Zealand.

The African champions have yet to beat the South Americans at this level with their best result achieved 10 years ago when they drew goalless on their way to reaching their second U20 World Cup final in Holland.

The Flying Eagles take on the Samba stars on June 1 in New Plymouth to kick start their 2015 campaign.

Manu said he will be going for broke against the five-time world champions.

“I respect all the teams who have qualified for this championship and that includes Brazil, who have been good at this level, but believe you me, Brazil is Brazil and Nigeria is Nigeria,” he began.

“Brazil have won the World Cup several times, but Nigeria have got silver twice and a bronze.

“At U17 level, we are rated No.1 in the world. And half of the team to New Zealand are from the last U17 team. We are a united team who have conquered the world at U17 level and we have now been joined by other players who are more technically balanced than some of them from the U17s. So, I believe we are ready to take on any team.

“But I also know that the first match in any tournament is the most important and so we will do all we can to pick up the maximum three points against Brazil, which will go a long way to motivate the team in subsequent matches.

He continued: “I could recall Mexico came to last U17 World Cup as defending champions and they had not lost a match for two years. But against a Nigerian side, who did not play a test game for a month, we defeated them 6-1.

“This is not to say we will be overconfident. We are confident in ourselves to beat Brazil in our opening game.”

Men of Excellence are known for their actions but before their actions they are known by their words.
How Manu Garba spoke in this brief interview is how True Champions talk. Champions speak with Absolute conviction and their confidence stems from Information they have that others dont know about or may knw about but dont have keen details of. But ultimately, the confidence of a Champion stems from total belief in Himself (and if he's a leader, in his team also).
Manu Garba, Nduka Ugbade and The Boys ooze these qualities... THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY THEY JUST CAN'T BE BEATEN...

Nwakali Flying Eagles Diary - May 24

Flying Eagles midfielder Chidiebere Nwakali will on a daily basis lead you through the team’s U20 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.

Nurnberg, Germany – Sunday, May 24

I am down for breakfast late in the morning, nothing really special, it was just like previous breakfasts here.

I settle for scrambled eggs and bread as usual.

And back in my room 320, I relax the punk of my hair to look more like one of my idols Pogba of Juventus.

I am all packed for the trip to the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand. I have two big bags and one carry-on luggage.

It has been three tough weeks of training here – running, gym and most times training twice daily. The U17 training camp was a lot more demanding, though.

I’m in the World Cup mood, I need to focus on the competition and nothing more.

Both my roommate Godwin Saviour and I talk about the long trip all the way to New Zealand. We are told we will be flying for over 25 hours before we reach our match venue New Plymouth.

It won’t be easy, but I have my laptop fully loaded with my favourite horror movies. I love Zombies and vampires. I like the combat between evil and good because in the end, good will triumph.

This will be my longest journey ever, my trips to China and the USA from England do not compare.

We will fly from Frankfurt to Dubai and from there we will stop over in Melbourne, Australia, before we land in Auckland, New Zealand. And from there we will connect a local flight to New Plymouth.

I cannot wait to meet up again with my best friend in football, Kelechi Iheanacho, who will fly into New Zealand from England. We played together at Taye Academy in Owerri.

Biko, these people should allow us relish in our excitement and stop reminding us of the failures of over-aged men of 1987 and 2005

When you send men to play with boys, do you expect to win the younger, faster kids? We are talking of pacy, dogged, insatiable BOYS and people want to place them side-by-side with slow, unserious, nonchallant men. Why?

These boys make their own destiny, can anyone tell us the preparation of the past teams? How many games did they play enroute the Championships? How many wins did they have? How many draws and losses? What were the stats of their best players? How many goals per match? What about clubs? What clubs bought them? What clubs did they play for? What were their records for those clubs? What about team work? How well did they work as a team?

The next person that wants to be smart and make comparisons better do so in totality. We don't want partial comparisons angry

Thirded!!! *yikes!!! (I know it's wrong english but since AIG07 'seconded' the motion... I, as the 3rd in line shud scream 'thirded' right? *smiles*).
But u're right Miss... That's why I responded "IT ISN'T DEJA VU" to that article comparing the 2005 team and this team. The difference is SO BIG AND WIDE. And nice analytical questions you threw up there Miss... I'm pretty sure if everyone can honestly answer the questions, WE'LL ALL ARRIVE AT JUST ONE ANSWER... This Class of 2015 is way different, way ahead and a very long way the most cohesive and most lethal of all teams to have represented Nigeria at this level. THEY ARE IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN. They are quick evolving into the World's Greatest Clinical, Most Cohesive, Highest Scoring and Most lethal Soccer Team or Machine ever known and seen. They hold the record for most goals scored at a single fifa u17 world cup tournament(26gls... The former record stood at 24 by Germany). THEY DELIVERED THE MOST EXQUISITE AND MOST BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL EVER SEEN OR KNOWN AT THE U-17 LEVEL. What stops them from doing even more at U-20 level? NOTHING!!! Only they can stop themselves.
In the words of Safari Girl, these boys "...are writing their own destinies" and I TOTALLY AGREE COZ THOUGH GOD OWN THEIR LIVES, HE'S GIVEN THEM THE PEN TO WRITE THEIR OWN STORIES AS INDIVIDUALS AND STORY AS A TEAM. GOD does this same thing to all of us on this forum and far beyond... He's given every1 a purpose but he's also made us the writer of our stories in line with His purpose. THESE BOYS ARE INCOMPARABLE TO ANY OTHER IN HISTORY... Like I said in anoda post, "They stand on the threshold of greater greatness"

Interesting interview from the boss of the Flying Eagles Coach Manu Garba.

What impresses me about this man is that he is one coach I can not find a fault to criticise. AsII read the interview and he pointed out the defense problem, my mind went to the players not working together to help the defense. Coach Manu Garba pointed it out. That shows that he is working on it.

When once he sorts this out, this team will become stronger. Which is frightening because the team is already very strong.

Much respect to the Coaching crew of this great Super Eagles.

What we need from these boys is for them to pay attention to their coaches and play strictly to instructions. Fear or confidence is not as important as them sticking to the plans of their coaches on the field of play. That is what will help them win the title. They are in good hands.

I have said many times that forget these players, the superstar(s) in this team is the coaching crew headed by Manu Garba. Isnt this the same country that Eguavoen, Keshi (many dont know that Keshi failed as an age-grade coach), John Obu and the likes have picked from to go to the age-grade tournaments? It takes tremendous efforts to scout players and achieve with them from the grassroots. I'm not just impressed with this, I'm impressed with his tactical awareness. he seems to know his own weaknesses even before outsiders find them out. What more can you ask for?

I hope he continues with this philosophy because it is the only one that can ensure that our age grade football produce stars that foreign clubs will fall all over for. Almost every member of this team is being offered a pre-tournament agreement. From Saviour to Bulbwa to Mustapha to Musa to Matthew to Sokari. Through this man, Nwakali, Iheanacho, Success, Ezeh, Alampasu have all gotten foreign clubs. Not just useless clubs. They have got top clubs. Iheanacho and Nwakali in Man City. Yahaya in Tothenham. Ndidi in Genk in Belgium. Success in Granada in the best league in the world, Ezeh with Porto, the Portoguese giants, Alampasu, a goalkeeper, in Estoril in portugese top flight. Even the great Enyeama had to first go to a Bnei Yehuda in the Israeli second division. When last did we see this happen to our boys? These are strides that haters will never see.

I just cant wait for the tournament to start

The Manu Garba Interview (Part 2)

The Manu Garba interview continues with the Flying Eagles coach talking about his team’s opening World Cup match against Brazil, the players who will shine in New Zealand as well as his future.

QUESTION: The Flying Eagles are drawn against five-time champions Brazil, North Korea and Hungary in the first round. What do you know about these teams?

MANU GARBA: Sincerely speaking, we know very little about them, but then everyone knows the Brazilian philosophy – they play the way we want by moving the ball from the rear, they don’t kick long balls. This style is good for our own pattern of play.

The Hungarians are from Europe, they will play a more direct game, while the Koreans are very, very fast and they like moving the ball.

But we are a team who do not want to be diverted from the way we play and so we want the opponents to play the way we want.

We have really worked very, very hard and I believe by the time we are in New Zealand, we will be ready for any team in the world.

Your opening match is against mighty Brazil, who have won this competition five times. How are you looking forward to that game and how crucial is it in your aspiration?

I respect all the teams who have qualified for this championship and that includes Brazil, who have been good at this level, but believe you me, Brazil is Brazil and Nigeria is Nigeria.

Brazil have won the World Cup several times, but Nigeria have got silver twice and a bronze.

At U17 level, we are rated no.1 in the world. And half of the team to New Zealand are from the last U17 team. We are a united team who have conquered the world at U17 level and we have now been joined by other players who are more technically balanced than some of them from the U17s. So, I believe we are ready to take on any team.

But I also know that the first match in any tournament is the most important and so we will do all we can to pick up the maximum three points against Brazil, which will go a long way to motivate the team in subsequent matches.

I could recall Mexico came to last U17 World Cup as defending champions and they had not lost a match for two years. But against a Nigerian side, who did not play a test game for a month, we defeated them 6-1.

This is not to say we will be overconfident. We are confident in ourselves to beat Brazil in our opening game.

We are very ready for the World Cup.

You said you will go to the World Cup as African champions and after that you said you wish to make history as the first Nigerian team to go all the way and win the U20 World Cup. Are we on track in this regard?

Yes, I said before the AYC that I wish to go to Dakar to qualify as African champions. I still believe we can go all the way to win this U20 World Cup for the first time for Nigeria.

Nigeria have reached the final twice and we got a bronze in Moscow (1985). This time we have a team who are very focused, determined and want to go out there and win the World Cup for Nigeria for the first time.

But we cannot do that by merely talking about it, we intend to take every match as it comes. So, the most important game now is the match against Brazil.

We will approach every game with caution, although the knockout stages are the most difficult, but we want to win every game and by so doing, we will be champions. This is our major objective at the World Cup.

All we need is for Nigerians to keep faith in this team, for them to pray for this team and on our part, we will do everything humanly possible to bring the cup back to Nigeria and Africa.

When, and not if, you win the World Cup, what will be the next step for you and the team?

I am a firm believer in destiny and I always put the country first.

The most important thing for me now is to make sure we go to the World Cup and accomplish our mission of winning the tournament. Whatever comes after that, God knows what I will be and when I will be.

Wherever he takes me to, I will remain grateful to God Almighty because he determines everything.

Right now, God knows the team who will win the World Cup – it is our hope and prayer that it will be Nigeria.

We have come a long way, we have worked very hard throughout the qualifiers, managing ourselves in all aspects, but our major focus has remained to win the World Cup.

With God on our side, we can do it.

Could you pick a particular player from this very talented team who will shine at the World Cup?

Right from the qualifiers, Taiwo Awoniyi has been very consistent and he has improved match after match. He is a player who gets into a scoring position better than any other player.

I believe if he stayed calm, he will be one player who will do very, very well at the World Cup.

There are some others like Kelechi Iheanacho, who was the best player at the last U17 World Cup. If he was free of injury, he will hit very big as well.

There is also Kingsley Sokari. If he listened very well and works very hard too, he will have a great World Cup.

You cannot forget a player like Moses Simon, who has been fantastic in Belgium, he will be great.

I believe the best player and highest scorer (of the World Cup) will come from my team.

With such a presentation of top quality players, won’t you have selection problems?

We have a way we choose our team here – the starting team will be the best players in the week of the match, the player who are injury free and who are in top shape and the right frame of mind to deliver the goods.

With these 21 players, you can close your eyes and say this 11 will start and they will do well.

At times, the bench will be stronger than the starting line-up. Sometimes you win your match from the bench.

There won’t be selection problems because we will pick players who understand each other more, so that the cohesion and the rhythm will go well. Team play comes first before any individual showmanship.

We will pick players who are free of injury, players who play together and who are committed to cover for each other throughout the game.

So, is it safe to say this is the best team you have ever worked with?

I believe the U17, who won the World Cup two years ago are the best because this team are yet to play in the World Cup.

With the U17s, we broke so many records – Best player, best goalkeeper, won the fair play trophy and so on.

But this team in terms of quality has improved a great deal. We cannot rate them because they have not played at the World Cup yet.

This team is the delight of any coach at this level.

We just hope these boys keep their cool, listen to what we teach them and with God on our side, we will win the trophy.

Finally, how confident are you Nigeria will be crowned world champions on June 20?

I am not overconfident, but right from when I was born I do not fear in whatever I do because God has a way for everybody in life.

I go into any challenge without fear but with good preparation, I pray very well and ensure the team is united. No matter how good a team is, when there is no unity between the officials and the players, it will affect the team on the pitch.

But this team has been very wonderful. The officials are a team and so in Senegal despite some few problems, we managed ourselves and at the end of the day we won the trophy with a half strength team.

The team have grown in confidence and unity. You could see that even we announced the 21-man squad, it was just like it had not been announced.

This goes to show that we have done a very good job to unite this set of players.

I believe this unity will be for a purpose and God will now crown all our efforts for us to create that history in winning the cup for the first time for Nigeria.

Good luck coach in New Zealand.

Thank you and good luck as well to all Nigerians.

I am surprised you remember coach Keshi's U17 outing. If I am correct, his team crashed out of the group stage of the African U17 championship and we did not win a game. That was a bad time. I actually watched Coach Keshi grow as a Coach.

You are right the coaching crew and Coach Manu Garba are the true stars of this team. We are reaping the dividends of their hard work and I feel they will achieve more with this boys.

Coach Manu Garba's answer on Brazil was flawless. His remark on fighting fear of failure with good preparation is a lesson for us all beyond the scope of football. The Unity of the players is aa testamentof the fatherly role the coaches play in the lives of these players when they are away from home.

Nice comparative analysis there Sir btw Awoniyi and Anelka. They do luk similar in a lot of ways but Awoniyi is still one unique talent. His build and finishing( he's still improving here and has d potential to be more clinical than anelka) are similar to anelka. But when it comes to work rate, Awoniyi is miles ahead wen anelka was his age.
Abt Nacho, You hv a point with the Henry left foot comparison but remember as a whole Nacho is more like a Messi but still unique coz he cud be more.

LeeCodeman is absolutely correct about the Manu Garba-led Technical crew being THE TRUE STARS of the team. They hv done things meticulously and with near perfect Sincerity and honesty. I can go on and on abt this crew but much words need not be said here... LET'S GO GET THAT CUP AND BRING IT HOME!

And uhm, Sir GoodJoe... I'm sure you know this but just mixed it up a little... Keshi coached the u-20 class (not u-17) of 2001 at the Ayc held in Ethiopia. Angola emerged champions and went on to finish in the 2nd round at the wyc. Ghana were runners-up and went on to take silver at the wyc inspired by michael essien and co. They lost to a javier saviola-inspired argentina
