Hello Car Gurus, kindly help me out here. I do quite a distance to and fro work everyday-I live in the outskirts of Lag. Got other cars but using AC in the intense heat these days in Lagos recharged traffic gridlock of nowadays is no joke fuel wise. Am considering getting a very small car-Golf 3- with the mindset of switching on the AC on all through the traffic at least for a little comfort. I'd like to know you guys experience with Golf 3 fuel economy with AC. Lots of people have told me the car is rugged to the teeth;but almost all the guys opened up that they cannot make same comment if one uses the AC. Does GOLF 3 have impressive fuel economy with the AC on? Thanks for your kind response. Am hoping Ikenna and Siena and other car experts would avail me with their ever reliable response here. |

The effects of the aircon compressor on fuel economy are negligible. The extra load the compressor will place on the engine when the aircon is switched on will be very small. The greatest load is when you first switch the aircon on, for a split second, whereby inertia plays a role. Once inertia's overcome, the extra load won't even tell on the engine. 2 Likes 1 Share |

lol. if you are looking for fuel economy on AC with the VW GOlf3, that wont work..i use one aside and i can say its not as economical as you think it is when it comes to AC and fuel consumption. |

JessK: I think it normal with every car.. i dont know if its my engine that's big. I remember putting in fuel of 5k about two weeks ago (3/4 of the tank's capacity) and the next day i took it out on an hr's journey (in total) and i was surprised to find out the fuel needle went down (not drastically) but about two bars down. I really cannot compare it with other cars i drive because i do not buy the fuel in those cars so i don't look at the way the engine consumes gas while the AC is on. But i am sure with a full tank and AC 24/7 it should last about a 5-7days for you. |

Better still, do also kindly recommend on the choice of small/small budget and rugged cars that have wonderful fuel economy on AC usage so to speak. |

i just got a golf 3 with engine capacity of 1.6,without A/C.but i am considering fixing an AC. but some pple says,it will damage my engine since it didnt come with AC. pls i need your advice on this.expecially dos that have installed AC on their car before. is there really any effect. |

I think I read somewhere that the average increase in fuel consumption when you run your car AC is around 15%. It may vary with climate & car type though. I think you should check VW forums where you can get more technical & reliable data. Personally though, the AC is a must for me even as my car is a V6, an SUV actually. I'd rather park the car than drive without the AC. I don't compromise my comfort at all. I guess that's why one works so hard. 1 Like |

So, it's not advisable to switch off the AC intermittently to save fuel? What effect does the compressor switching itself off when it is cool and on later have on fuel consumption? CORDROSS: Redcliff ke? I am not an auto expert but i have used a golf3 before. I would buy that car over and over again. I bought mine at 128k km and it was very fresh and clean. engine was on point. What i advise you to akways do is it to make sure you adhere to manufacturers requirements and dont remove the theromstat. If you are witty enough you can fix normal issues in the car yourself. 3 Likes |
