The most realistic way to fight BH is to make the Nigerian army by far the biggest army in Africa, with at least 500,000 men. Our army strength at present is about 60,000. Defending a country of 170 million? It's ludicrous. The country is too big for such a small-sized army. They will be spread too thin in any attempts to contain BH, who are able to strike at will, taking advantage of the vast size of the country, and its multitude of population centres. Right now they're spoilt for choice on where to send their suicide bombers.

To effectively monitor and patrol all population centres and checkmate BH, we need a HUGE army. We must find resources from wherever to maintain that force. In WW2, 15 million soldiers served in the German army. In Russia, the Red Army comprised 34 million soldiers. For a routine expedition, they would deploy like 4 million soldiers!

What are we doing parading 60,000 men and calling it an army? We have no army.

As a country, without security you can't do anything. You cannot grow economically. You cannot manufacture. You cannot expand education and industry. You can't develop tourism. You are at a standstill.

Buhari, give us a PROPER ARMY. 500,000 minimum, with modern equipment, and good pay - and BH will be history.

The highest unofficial figure that has been given for the army is 90,000 men, but official statistics from major agencies state 60,000. Either way, it is still far too small to serve the country's security requirements.

If we improved our tax regime, definitely. Just getting 50 million Nigerians to pay N2,000 per month will give you N100 billion per month.

This is very simple nauu; recruit 250,000 from Biafra lands + 250,000 from Ijaw lands, and by the time the Boko Haramists are vanquished, with about 499,000 casualties & fallen heros in the Nigeria Army; then we will now start recruiting from the North & the Southwest to fill the vacuum.

There is a difference between a war time and a peace time size of any military. the German and Russia examples are wrong. Germany had only 6 divisions during the peace time in the 30s and Russia had considerably less.

Nigeria technically maintains a peacetime size Armed forces. What I will agree with is for the fed to create a Military reserve of over 200k - 300k men/women. then they can be called up to serve 12 months during any crisis like BH. maintaining a large army during peace time however isn't cost effective and Nigeria traditionally has no external enemies to fight or territorial ambitions so what is the point of a large size army?

NA alone stands above 130k. And if you want to have a 500k strong army, you have to be a BIG spender on your Military like Egypt. Even NA is still contending with having BPVs for all its men/women. Nigeria doesn't spend on her military atall. During GEJ tenure, He borrowed $1bn to arm the military but Nigerian were shouting on what the Army wants to use it for.
If you want a robust Army, you must have a yearly budget of atleast $7bn allocated to them.
Go and ask how much billions of dollars Egypt is spending to keep its hardwares and over 500k soldiers in order, then you will understand what financing a big military portray.

At full strength each division is ten thousand men
(Modern divisions have less men but use equipment to achieve even greater firepower)

the 7th Div. Is over 10k since its creation. It may be over 20k considering the surge in the deployments during the Feb-april Anvil and Hammer Ops.

War and terrorism are now being fought with more of technologies than foot soldiers. That's the area Nigeria should improve on.

The Nigerian middle class can be taxed a bit further to raise this money and of course a lot of Nigerians can afford to pay 2000 Naira monthly without feeling the heat.

Bros numbers don't win battles but effective strategy will do the job. In this kind of assymetric warfare we are facing against bokoharam we don't need a huge army. What is required are well trained fast moving brigade size units that can be deployed quicky and have the ability to fight independently without support for long period's of time.
Huge Size and speed do not go together. The terrorist are using their ability to move quickly and attack several places at the same time due to their small size and the flexibility it affords them. We also need to beat them in their own game by doing away with our current rigid structures and embrace flexibility and speed as the back bone of our strategy.
In such away that our troops can quickly deploy to fend of a bokoharam attack and at thesame time go after fleeing terrorist to wipe them out.

The countries that sell you these fancy ideas have militaries numbering millions of men.

Do what they do, not what they say.

Small France alone has a military of 400,000. Why don't they have just 50,000 men since they have ''technology and strategy''? They even have defacto support from NATO forces numbering several millions, by way of treaty, so technically they don't really need an army!

In all of Nigeria's history, 98% of Nigerian deaths have been in the hands of other "Nigerians". Only about 2% was caused by a foreign enemy.

What Nigeria needs is to tell herself the truth. Y'know, ask herself some SERIOUS questions. For e.g. Is Nigeria ONE?
If the answer to that is affirmative, then I can assure you that even a 60,000 well trained army is enough to defend her because that army will fight with heart and soul.

BTW are you serious about confiscating my beer money to fund your army. You must be outta ya goddam mind.

Somebody up there said something about a ''peacetime army''. We are not in peacetime. 10,000+ dead by Boko Haram in 3 years is not ''peacetime''. Someone else said we have no external enemies. We do. They are the ones funding Boko Haram. We need to get this 'peacetime' mentality out of our heads. The country is at war with forces who are determined to destroy us, and we are still treating the situation with kid gloves.
