, Why not try the US!

Writing from experience, I don't think it's wise to spend one pound here, when you are not sure of making that money back during and after your studies; neither will you get the needed career which you seek out to pursue in the first place.

As it stands now, the UK government no longer give the normal 2 years post study visa, which makes it almost impossible to make a meaning out of your life after your studies here!

Research the US or Canada, if not sure, invest your money into the Nigerian system, while you do your master's in one of the Nigerian Universities.

That is my candid advice!!

oludunamis:

Thought I'd add my few cents here, especially for those planning to study oil and gas related courses:

Imperial College remains the most recognised, however its tough to get into, very expensive as well, program very theorectical and very intense, if you dont have solid engr background, stay clear

Herriot Watt, in my opinion is as good as imperial, very reutable program, i place their program side by side with imperial

RGU, their course are very broad and not that intense in terms on theory, however they have close alignment with industry, dont be suprised that RGU has very employment rate, as high as the best univs in the UK (according to online stats) dont know why, all I know is most RGU grad get jobs

Stay clear of the following, Salford, London southbank, they are new programs and people dont quite trust them yet, beter not to waste your money

People study subsea engr at cranfield and Univ of Aberdeen, having been an ex subsea engr myself, i dont think the program is neccessary, maybe ok for people already practising in the industry, but certainly not for newbies

Dont focus on the UK only if you are looking into the oil sector, UK oil sector is fast dimisnishing, growth areas remain US, canada and Australia to name a few (ofcourse sensible countries where i think naija people may live to live and study)

Any questions regarding that industry, just hit me back

i agree that the uk oil industry is diminishing but i ask of you, where else can one go to study as in my case an llm in oil and gas law for £8544.

i have researched the us, did not find many schools with an llm in oil and gas/ energy law, and those i found are way more expensive than uk schools. As someone on a very very tight budget what do you advice i do.

The top schools are the Golden Triangle:

And maybe Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow.

As in getting between MPH or MBA, make up your mind what you want to do with your life.

i just finished chemical engineering from unilag with 3.35/5, and i want to go to a reputable school in the uk, usa, dubai or australia for my msc in chemical, process, or oil and gas(emphasis on petroleum and pipeline engineering). i know the grade is low, but i'd still like to go straight to masters since i dont want the extra cost of a pgd. i'd like anyone with any information to please lemme know what my best options are,cos i'd really like to go to a top school with good industry links, so i can get a good job there. all kinds of help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Everyone,
I am new to the forum and found it really useful. I am moving from India to Aberdeen on Tier 2 dependent visa. I have an experience of 3 years in McKinsey as an Analyst. Just wanted to know how is the job scenario in Aberdeen ? Are there good consulting firms/banks in Aberdeen or its just oil and gas? Is there any scope to get into business planning/research divisions of Oil companies with this experience ?

The fall back plan for me is to go for a 1 year course in University of Aberdeen and then apply for jobs after a year.

Just wanted to know which courses have overall best recognition in terms of good students intake and placement scenario in Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University ? Would be great to hear views from people working/studying in Aberdeen/UK.

Hi Sagamite,
I want your opinion on University of Liverpool. I intend going there for a PhD in Chemistry. What is the city like in general? And the rating of the school, especially for research output. It seems OK, with the research I've done online but I'll want the opinion of someone with hands-on related experience. Thanks

University of Liverpool is very good for research especially in STEM subjects like that. That is why it is in the Russell Group (the group of top research universities in the UK).

The quality of its research would be above average, maybe not premier.

https://www.nairaland.com/141689/rough-guide-best-most-reputable/9#19532067

That said, those are now old stats. We would find out the latest stats about research quality and power by the middle of 2015 when the latest assessment comes out.

As for the city, I have been there. It appears very good.

- it is cheap.

- it is modern and beautiful in the city centre (where I stayed).

- it is very close to Manchester (the UK's second city), so it is like if you are living in 2 cities.

- there are a lot of fine girls who are up for it.

- it has a high black population (even historically, considering that it was a port in the 1800s and many blacks settled there then and there generations are still there)

- it has the highest rate of mixed race couples I have ever seen in the UK, so your pool is not restricted and they are not racist.

Candid advise needed.
Between Structural Engineering in University of Leeds and Oil and Gas Engineering in Aberdeen, which would be better for a young and high flying Civil Engineering graduate with a little experience in the oil and gas sector.
I need to know which to prepare for come September.
Advise from competent persons would be highly appreciated

If you are doing anything with Oil and Gas or Petroleum there is no point wasting time going through any merits or demerits between the 2.
RGU wins hands down.

Hello everyone
Hello Sagamite
pls I need your advice. I m a recent graduate of elect/elect engineering with 4.26/5.00 cgpa. from a good Nigerian fed univ.
I have little knowledge about the industry and postgraduate studies abroad. I intend pursuing a career in the industry mainly oil and gas. The wide options i have in mind for masters now are :
Cranfield univ for process systems Engr.
Elect/elect Engr. @ univ of Leeds
Controls systems in any reputable university
Advanced control systems at Manchester
Oil n gas Engr/petroleum Engr. in Aberdeen.

pls which ones are better in terms of:
1. employment prospects (opportunities) after masters
2. The reputation of the university and their quality/standard
3. The value of my masters degree

Any other recommendation for studies in other countries would be appreciated

Thanks in anticipation
Concerned graduate.
