In an exclusive interview with Sahara Reporters, Islamic scholar and renowned leader, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, provided his perspective on how Nigerians should fight Boko Haram. He was critical of the way Nigerians have thought about the issue.

“The North is not ready to hear the truth.”

Gumi suggested that Muslims in Nigeria aren’t aware of who their enemy really is. He believes that if Northerners can correctly identify the ones who are killing them. They can successfully defeat Boko Haram.

“We Muslims need to face the fact that some of us are killing some of us. Being a military man, he will stand up to see that he defeats Boko Haram. The fundamentalists may now feel more invigorated to fight till the end. There’s a chance that there may be more violence than before.” said Gumi

Sheikh Gumi also showed appreciation for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s conduct during the elections.

“President has showed a lot of statesmanship by conducting one of the fairest elections in the country, and then peacefully seceding to the winner.

“We are happy that things turned out peacefully.”

He also gave us his opinion on what he thinks about President Buhari’s new administration.

“We hope that President Buhari will conduct himself in the most amicable manner to drive this nation to safety.”

Gumi also had significant insight on what kind of leadership he believes is necessary to lead Nigeria out of its recent troubles.

“Leadership entails a lot of things, it’s not just about being honest, you need flexibility and other qualities, sometimes you have to be a fool to be a leader. Even the support Buhari got from the south is because they want him to do something drastic, drastic moves always backfire. Nigeria can’t take a drastic move, it needs a gradual process of getting there.”

Gumi suggested that Muslims in Nigeria aren’t aware of who their enemy really is. He believes that if Northerners can correctly identify the ones who are killing them. They can successfully defeat Boko Haram.

No my friend. The north may have lost the top spot but they have never exercised more controll over the affairs of govt than they do now.

Since moving the capital to Abuja the north has claimed dominace over the civi service.

While southerners with very good degrees look for well paid jobs in multi national companies the north has infused children of the elite in prime positions within the civil service. In a few years down the road they will be eligible to occupy political appointments regulating whatever sector you think you control. Ask Sanusi.

The north's control of the military and security outfits is not debatable. Obasanjo thought by breaking their hegenomy in the officer cadre by promotong national representation into the NDA will solve this imbalance but he failed to see that the NCOs are over 70% northerner.

You may not know this but,, several southern junior and mid ranking officers have been killed in battle not by Boko Haram but by their own troops under their command.

How do you think the counter coup of 1966 was possible by junior northern officers? This was because the NCOs were mainly northerners.

The northerners are very disciplined and smart when pushing their collective cause.
When Jonathan said that Boko Haram has infiltrated his govt, this is what he was talking about.

The northern oligarch has a lot to answer for Boko Haram.

Take for example the case of Abdullmutallab who is a child from a very privileged and influential family.

Abdul was mentored by no other than the current Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Sanusi, on his own part was found to be one of the architects and instigators of a sectarian riot in Kano during the Abacha regime. Sanusi was later imprisoned in Sokoto for 2 years before being exiled.

Sanusi then proceeded to Khartoom, Sudan where he mixed freely with radical elements like Osama bin Laden.

Sanusi also has another terror link with Ogueche, the mastermind behind the Maraba motor park bombings in Abuja. Ogueche fled to the same Sudan before his extradition was completed.
