The Northern States Governors Forum has said it is the responsiblity of Northern leaders to find opportunities for the people of the North.

This statement was made by Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima, the Chairman of the Forum whilst speaking on the issue of poverty during the 50th anniversary of the death of the late Premier of the north, Sir Ahmadu Bello.
Shettima said, “Unemployment in the north is extremely high. Nigeria is a country of two nations, the South is much more stable and prosperous, the north on the other hand is in a poverty trap. In Nigeria, poverty wears a northern cap, if you are looking for a poor man, get somebody wearing a northern cap.”

“Sardauna was a leader of his own generation and every generation come up with its own style of leader. Sardauna did remarkably well for the North and for the nation, our duty, especially for those of us in the North is in our interest to invest in the people.

“Nigeria’s population will double in the next 23 years. By 2020, Nigeria’s population will be around 210 million. By 2030, there will be about 270million Nigerians and by 2050, when old men like me might not be around, the population will be around 440million.

“By then, we will be the third most populous nation on earth and most importantly, 70% of the population will be living in Northern Nigeria. Deforestation, desertification, joblessness, hopelessness, illetracy, unemployment, low access to health facilities are all recepies for disaster.

“It is in our enlightened self interest as northern leaders to invest in the people, to invest in agriculture, to create jobs because, there is a direct correlation with endemic poverty and most of the crisis threatening the north,” he added.

Stop having so many children. Nigeria's unity is shaky. Become a liability as a result of overpopulation and OYO. Every region will look out for their interests first! Introduce family planning for your own benefit.

The north is a poverty - trapped region today because the leaders have refused to do the right thing. Agriculture used to be at its peak in Northern Nigeria in time past. Today every díck and harry is waiting for FG monthly allocation. We are now so lazy that we can't even work on our farmlands anymore. Just waiting for federal allocations to survive. Rubbish system of government in Nigeria!!!

Did GEJ end poverty in the ND and SE? or could him clear the oil spillage that has turn their farm land to a dud land or their water that is now a dead trap to aquatic animal? or was he able to accomplish a single meaningful project in SE?

Am an igbo boy... But looking at the Nigerian map I can't see any region as blessed as the north..
... Only the leaders know why they don't want to tap from this obviously abundant resources I see.... or is it that they are blind to it.. .
... For me I can't get it
From sokoto to kano.... Kebbi to Niger to taraba all I see are poor people in the midst of riches
.. North should allow education it will do them a lot of good
Please ooh any Northern state that is ready to lease some land to me and my company. .. I am interested ooh

These people. They are funny!
Dear Northern Governors you know the north is a poverty trap what have you done about it and most importantly what are you doing about it apart from robbing it on their faces.
I know the people like been given leftover fishes instead of know how to fish.
Wise up people and take your destiny in your hands.

There is no difference between people in Niger Republic and to some extent Chadians in religion, culture etc, so said Kwankwaso the former Governor of Kano State.

The question then becomes, how is this acclaimed increase in population of Northern Nigeria in ratio so disproportionate to that of their neighbours in Chad and Niger Republic?

How true is the assertion by Gov. Shettima that 70% of Nigerians is (will be) living in the North as forecast?

The population stat is unimaginable and ridiculous.

There is no way we would reach that population by 2050 with our low life expectancy and high mortality rate.

It is only northerners that see begging has an occupation.....imagine

Ofcourse, the north should be a poverty trap. In d north we have d northern oligarchy who are very few and d slaves which comprises of d bigger population. The slaves are meant to serve d rich and even surrender their lives for them. If the former refuses to emancipate itself from slavery, the north will continue to be a poverty trap.

Taraaba state is bigger than Holland in land mass, yet Holland exports Agric produce more than ANY COUNTRY in the world. Your start wondering why the poverty rate in north is amazing.

Mr Gov, your people in the past (even now) have placed religion(Islam) above anything in their society, including their lives, welfare and development. Thanks to their wicked leaders.

The northen Nigeria is a center of learning for every preventable disease in africa. Call it Polio, VVF Meningitis etc. These damn diseases are preventable. Religion made your people reject polio vaccine until it started hitting u people bad. Child marriage which is approved by your religion, has been linked to Obstetric Fistula also known as VVF. Mehnn, thats blantant wickedness.

Until the root of the problems, which is blind followership among your on the doctrines of Islam, then these problems can NEVER be solved in near future.

Our gateman here in lagos, mr Garba is paid 15k a month. He also has a small shop where he sells provisions. But the amazing thing is that he has 3wives and 12 children all in Jigawa. Try abd discuss with him, he will tell u that their local govt chairman in jigawa didbt go to school. So he doesnt see needs to train his 12 children. Garba is one out of many northerners who live their lives based on this mentality.

If this is the price your people will have to pay angry for ruling Nigeria for almost 40yrs, I would suggest Igboland remains behind the scene in nigeria politics. Atleast 99% of our youths would be able to read or/and write.

The North caused their region to be poor. With the huge solid minerals in the north and its Agricultural potential, the North should not be poor. But because of their inordinate ambition to have power, they forgot that it is those who control the economy that have the real power. Today, no international investor is willing to step foot in the North to help them develop their resources due to incessant sectarian strife. All the political power in the world will not help the north catch up with the southern economy.

The solution is to emancipate the northern youths from mental slavery.
Prior to the Presidential election, all of them were sheepishly shouting "sai buhari" as if "sai-ing" buhari will automatically better their lots. Ask them the reason why they supported buhari against Jonathan who was trying hard to change their lives for the better with the establishment of almajiri schools and so on, a majority of them don't even know, while the rest supported buhari for the simple reason that he is a northerner and a Muslim.

Now they expect buhari to throw crumbs of bread to them every morning, while they lazy about looking for underaged girls to inflict with vvf.

The mentality of an average northern youth is very poor! Ask yourself why they have the highest population in the armed forces. It is because of that same lazy mentality which causes them to shy away from taking up more mentally demanding jobs, but prefer the lazy lifestyles of military barracks.

Yes, I know them because I spent 4years of my life doing my 1st degree in the north. I remember that the few northern guys in my class then all looked forward to only one job upon graduation, and that is joining the army! While those of us from the south were planning on how to go for a second degree or a higher degree so as to get better jobs and become more useful to the society and to our families.

To cut it all short, northern leaders should rise up to the challenge of educating their youths and liberating them from the shackles of mental incapacitation. They should be made to start seeing themselves as free-minded individuals who have the key to their own success and do not need any "ranka da de" to fend for them in exchange for being practically worshipped!
