This is clearly not feasible. The report says 124 million Nigerians are extremely poor and the programme is aimed at such class of people. Someone should help me calculate the monthly and yearly cost of this programme please. Government should rather channel the money to developmental programmes pls.
The government cannot pay that kind of money. Government dont have that huge amount of money. The country where governments cannot pay workers salary.

nigeria is a destroyed country.

Buhari should know that Nigerians will understand with him if he does not impliment that policy of paying for 5k to unemployed and poor nigerians. That's becuase its not sustainable. He should just concentrate in providing other more important things that will beter the economy than a policy that crumble the economy all in abid to fulfill campaign promises.

It's a question of sustainability, they want to start what they cannot finish. Secondly, it would be better if the plan were for poor widows, widowers and orphans. Any able bodied Nigerian who cannot find something to do is simply lazy. Why must everybody wait to be employed? There are two big problems with the unemployed 1) Laziness 2) pride. They all want executive jobs and nobody wants to start something small.

The Buhari Administration at the weekend declared that there are ongoing plans to implement one of its striking campaign promises that it will pay N5000 each to the poorest Nigerians across the country.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who gave the hint noted that government is “currently evaluating the best ways to collapse existing cash transfer and social welfare schemes to ensure consistency and alignment.

“Once this is completed, we will implement the first phase of this program, using recognized identification platforms and transparent payment solutions”, he added.
Nice..but this is not how it should take off.Grants for unemployed should come much much later.

First, Nigeria needs a SOLID National Identification system. I mean data capture for, e.g blood type, tribe,Parents names, etc, capturing who is a citizen (by birth,by Marriage and by Naturalization, from who is not.
Then grants be focused on the Aged (senior citizens )and the physically challenged.

It makes no sense paying grant to unemployed every month!!!. Examples from countries with such (my country host) have proven such youths would become totally dependent on government grants and would see no need for self actualization nor self development in entrepreneurial skills. In fact, they would protest to have an increase in grants thereafter.

Be easy on taxing the self employed citizens and entrepreneurs. There are many avenues from which past governments of various states have been taxing in multiple folds, indigenes and residents e.g, land use charge, municipal levy, radio and television, mobile advert,e.t.c apart from income tax.
Open doors for foreign investments, while policies to safe guard employees from exploitation of foreign investors should equally be in place. ( this also means investmenst into security and modern physical structures.
There are so many areas of investment that could drop the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria. Does Nigerians know that Mining and processing of mined resources is not effectively tapped into? we have cobalt, coal, gold, etc just to mention a few...And the chinese are vastly tapping into this.
Same goes with medical research and labs. Look at the huge amount of money Indian investors are making in Lagos alone.

Grants to unemployed youth, for me is wrongly timed.Rather teach them to fish, give them the opportunity to fish, than be giving them fish.

It is a good policy but I don't know how feasible it is when the number of unemployed is more than the employed. Some parastatals are owing their staff. Government complains on spending too much on re-recurrent expenditure. I can't actually match these.
Let's assume we have 20 million unemployed. Paying N5,000 to each person translates to N100bn every month and N1.2 trillion per annum.
Statisticians can help me out on the figures and compare it to the National Budget.
Instead, I believe this money can be invested on developmental project.
wise idea paying the unemployed at dis stage of our nation's development is a big setback. with no electricity, no good roads etc.this administration has to revisit the priority of nigerians.

HOPE BUHARI WILL NOT EQUALLY FORGET TO INCREASE WORKERS SALARIES THIS YEAR WHICH WILL MAKE AFTER 5YEARS? THIS IS IMPORTANT CONSTITUTIONAL MATTER AND CONSIDERING INFLATION IN THE MARKET. THE NLC SHOULD NOT BE DOCILE ON THIS ISSUE.

Welcome to the Country of Poorville. How on earth do they plan to achieve that? There are about 100 million persons in Nigeria that fit into the defined category. That means you are giving or plan to give N 500 billion every month or N 6 trillion yearly based on the existing estimate of the number of Poors. Now if you factor in the monthly influx of undocumented across the borders, you are fundamentally renaming Nigeria as Poorville. Nigerians have historically been deceived by their phantom resource blessing. This is simply not true.... Religious invocation that you must multiply and fill the earth is perhaps ill advised. Maybe the Vice President is cognizance of that fallacy when he alluded to increased fertility outdoing the available resources to sustain the resulting population increase. Mr. Vice President must visit his church and Mosques more often with a counter message that that section of Koran, Bible etc. will not fare well with the present economic realities. Rather than give out N 5000 to every poor Nigerian, institute a mandatory Birth Control to strict Border management (Immigration Control) to stem the geometry increase in population. Factually a limit of 2 children per family must be enforceable through sterilization. Next, massive infrastructure repairs and superhighways constructions to link all parts of Nigeria must be pursued. Instead of spending $2.5 billion monthly as handouts this money can help invigorate the planned project and further ensure full employment. Corruption is a dedicate dancing routine engaged by those who practised it. The reality is that it has been made a part of Nigerian culture and strongly rooted in it. Most of those who vow to fight it are paying only lip service to the cause and unfortunately they are ones who benefit most from it. Of those cited in Halliburton's Scandal, the two principals are in the Buhari's delegation to AU conference in South Africa. This is an indication of the nature of things to come and that is Fraud and Corruption are part of Nigeria.
