SA hawks have avionics that simulate those of gripens. It is a very easy task for pilots to cross floor to other platform like gripens and that's what they do from time to time.

Bwahahahahaa… what an impudence!!! an utter ignorance exhibited by my fellow Nigerian. You are such a black tire and next time you must make a concise research before you think of putting your dirty fingers on that keyboard.

SANDF received their first batch of gripens in 2010 and this year is 2015. So, tell me since when is 2015-2010=16 years, well perhaps that will be the answer in Nigerian mathematics.

Read this and stop fooling yourself around.

Fighterpilot how many people did you have to pay to get a job at the SAAF? You are an utter embarrassment to the service.

With peeps like you in the SAAF, the world would have to wait a century before we see the full compliment of SAAF Gripen pilots for it's entire fleet.

You are not a fellow Nigerian retarrd, you are a half-baked soweto dullard.

South-Africa signed the Gripen contract in 1999......... guess what, 16 years later you are still stuck with 9 Pilots for 26 Fighter, Shame!! Countries like the Czech republic who got theirs already have an overflow of Gripen Pilots and have started a Saab certified Pilot training school for the Gripen.

Why don't you read your own link, then tell us the number of pilots specified for the Gripen in that article?

Yes, you only have 9 Gripen Pilots. We aren't bothered, it is SAAF which has to deal with a severe pilot shortage.

Aha. We only had 6 according to you in 2012, yet 8 pilots flew in Sweden. Close that dustbin you call a mouth....it stinks.

RSA Hawk Lead-In Fighter Trainer (LIFT)

BAE Systems delivered 24 Hawk Mk120 Lead In Fighter Trainers to South Africa where they are operated by the South African Air Force’s 85 Combat Flying School at Air Force Base Makhado. South Africa’s Hawks are used for training Gripen pilots and weapons officers. The Hawk aircraft have been configured so that their cockpits and systems closely resemble those on the Gripen advanced fighter.

SO, HAWKS ARE ONLY USED AS A TRAINING PLATFORM FOR GRIPENS.

Your ATR42 is just a wasteful expenditure just take it as such and move on.

How can it not integrate with other platforms? The ATR-42 inbuilt data-link and radio comm sends messages to where? To itself?

Signing of the contract means nothing because the actual Gripens were not manufactured yet. It takes years to manufacture military hardwares, that's why Nigeria always opt for second hand materials

The number of 9 Gripen pilots ANYWHERE ON PLANET EARTH came from Nigerians on THIS forum. And they keep using that number as if it came from a credible source grin grin. If they are so clued up on the SAAF....i DARE any of them, show us how many Hawk pilots have moved onto the Gripen since 2012? How many have completed the conversion course since then? It was an absolute bare MININUM of 8 Gripen pilots in 2012, how many are there now? Or you'll keep saying "9....9...9" for the next 5 years to suite your argument?

In November 1998, the South African Air Force ordered 28 Gripen multi-role aircraft (19 single-seat and nine dual-seat). Denel Aviation of South Africa will produce part of the centre fuselage. The first flight was in November 2005 and deliveries began in April 2008 and will conclude in 2012. Four aircraft were officially handed over to the SAAF in September 2008. The fifth aircraft was delivered in November 2008.

So we have had the gripen for 7 years.

Only pilots who would do the training were trained beforehand, and there are a limited number of them and they can only train so many people per year, considering we had 18 in 2013/14 that suggests we train around 3 per year

What you fail to realize is that we are intergrating a completely new weapon which is unlike anything we have ever operated in terms of sophistication, we started with a cadre of 4 pilots and slowly but surley we train more and more ourselves.

We did sir and the manufacturers allowed only six to be trained on the platform and who will in turn train others. We don't know anything about their daily activities as many pilots have already tested the gripen. The hawks are only used as a training platform.

At present the SAAF can only muster six qualified Gripen pilots who only have 150 flying hours available across the whole Gripen squadron this year, according to Maynier. The annual target for fighter flying hours was 250 for the 2011/2012 period, according to the Department of Defence’s most recent Annual Report.

SAAF only has 6 qualified Gripen Pilots, and only 9 Gripen Pilots of a total Gripen crew of 18.

All of that was in 2010 and as in 2015 it was mandatory for all SANDF equipments to be integrated on the system including the army's ISTAR cytoons. The LINK- ZA continues to evolve beyond expectation.

Tactical data link is not a weapon that will need to be tested in a battle in order to convince prospective buyers. It is just a mere communication network. Your insinuation is tantamount of asking someone if a certain television will work during war or not. Well but that was only an example. Data link does not need to be battle tested because it is just purely a communication network that integrate all the military platforms to work as a unit.

Good, so you now realize data-link is NOT a weapon but a mere communication network. Cool....it's nothing big then.

Hey, before tactical data-link was developed in the year of service, do inbuilt datalinks for each quipment connect and work within their military or not ?

QUOTE : Multi-TDL Network (MTN) refers to the network of similar and dissimilar TDLs integrated through gateways, translators, and correlators to bring the air, land, and sea common tactical picture and/or common operational picture together.

Now the countries of the world who do not use tactical data-links but have data-links on their various individdual equipment, does their army, navy and air force communicate effectively or not ?

you signed the contract in 98. so definitelt had 10 years to train more than 9 pilots before the aircrafts are delivered.

now it's 17 years and you are stuck with just 9

Because a communication tool does not mean is not important. We all know that cellphone is not a weapon but it can facilitate criminal activities to run smooth and so is tactical data link. It is a system that helps all weapon platforms to interact with each other in coordination and achieve the objective perfectly.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has zero tactical data link.

8 SOUTH AFRICAN GRIPEN PILOTS TOOK PART IN EXERCISE LION EFFORT 2012 HELD IN SWEDEN

-We sent ALL our Gripen pilots to Sweden that year? Not one single Gripen pilot on South African soil for a number of weeks?

-OR we only left ONE Gripen pilot at home in 2 Squadron to operate and guard against any domestic/regional unforseen threat?

-How did 8 Gripen pilots go to Sweden in 2012 when f00ls on here were insisting we only had "6 Gripen pilots fact!" at that time?

-Your numbers then were wrong, what makes you think they are right now?

Let these M0RONS keep believing we only have 9 Gripen pilots. Infact let them think we only have 3. The more uninformed they are, the better.

Pilot qualification is done yearly. If 8 pilots are combat qualified in 2012, they can become disqualified in 2013 if they fly less than the required number of hours for 2013.

As at today 2015, NO single SAAF Gripen pilot has enough flying hours to qualify for combat, but we do agree you have 9 pilots even though they are NOT technically combat qualified
