the Nigeria Football Federation has reportedly opened talks with Sweden women’s national team coach Pia Sundhage to take over as coach of the Super Falcons. Sundhage was on the Swedish bench as the Falcons came back from 2-0 down to force the more-fancied Europeans to a 3-3 draw in their opening Group D game of the 2015 World Cup in Canada. “Top officials are keen to have the highly-rated coach take over the Falcons,” an NFF official was quoted as saying by AfricanFootball.com. “The Falcons have very talented players like (Asisat) Oshoala and (Desire) Oparanozie, but their problem is basically coaching and that is why they opened talks with Pia in Canada during the World Cup.” However, the fate of present coach of the women’s national team, Edwin Okon, is unknown, as officials of the federation did not disclose if he would be given the boot or made to work with the Swede if employed by the NFF. Okon has been criticised for lacking the technical quality to head the technical crew of the Falcons, despite winning the 2014 African Women Championship. After an outstanding performance in the thrilling 3-3 draw against the Swedes, the Falcons’ excesses were exposed in their second Group D game against Australia, which they lost 2-0. The African champions struggled to match the more creative Aussies and were dealt a huge blow, thus putting their qualification hopes to the knockout stage for the first time in 16 years, into jeopardy. “We don’t know yet, if Okon will play any role under Sundhage, if she agrees to manage the Falcons. That has not been decided yet. But the team needs a new coach to manage the new set of young players in the team, who are the future of women’s football in Nigeria,” an official said. If Sundhage gets the job, it will not be the first time the Falcons would be managed by an expatriate coach, though the team’s technical crew has largely been headed by local coaches. Former Super Eagles coach, Bonfrere Jo, a Dutchman, and German Thomas Obliers had previously managed the record African champions. Sundhage, the 2012 FIFA World Coach of the Year, won two Olympic gold medals with the United States women national team in 2008 and 2012. She was also in charge of the American women, when they lost the final of the 2011 Women’s World Cup to Japan. As a manager, she’s also won the Four Nations Tournament (2008 and 2011), the Algarve Cup (2008, 2010 and 2011), while she was named the 2003 WUSA Coach of the Year. The 55-year-old was handed the Sweden national team job in 2012 after agreeing a four-year deal with the Swedish FA. Her first major tournament with the Swedes was the 2013 European championship, which Sweden hosted, but Sundhage’s team lost 1-0 in the semi-final to eventual winners Germany. Copyright PUNCH.

Sorry Nigerians, we lost it.

I think we need more tactical and technical people in our technical crew. Most of these so-called coaches lack what it takes to lead a team to a great tournament as this, I even doubt if any of these guys attend any training or course to this effect.

I wish the Nigerian government can invest in sport, most especially football, by setting up schools of football/training schools. If we must be great at the International level, there is a need for proper coaching of our talents, I believe this would also help in the discovery of more and better talents that could be groomed into superstars.

Not just by inviting people into the team as a squad, just few weeks or months to a great tournament as this. We need proper teaching, lectures, grooming and training with no exception to our technical crew, in order to be able to catch up with the international standard and rub shoulders with counterparts from other nations.

I wish our girls safe flight back home. embarassed cry
The problem goes even beyond the national team coaches. It starts right from how this players develop before getting to the national team. The first thing we need to do is tell ourselves the honest truth. Talent is not enough.

We pride ourselves so much on the cliché that talents abound across the country. Yes, they do. But monkey post, neighbourhood field or under bridge talent won't win us senior world cups o. The most you will win is U-17 where raw talent reigns.

What kind of training do our players get between the ages of 11 and 18? Is there any informed technical input? Usually, the answer is no. The Messi we see today is not on the same level as the one we saw at U-20, neither is today's Ronaldo the same as the one that joined Man U years ago. You can point to specific areas where their game has improved.

For me, where we need foreign coaches or foreign technical assistance is not even our senior teams o. It is in our academies and age grade teams.

Another failed attempt to perform at the world stage.

Okon should be fired straight away. A better coach would have maximised d little talent at his disposal and performed better in dis group. Apart 4rm d fact dat he's tactically inept, his mentality is shallow.

When they levelled up against Sweden and began to waste time and eventually began to celebrate after d draw; d 1st question I asked those I watched d match with was 'did we miss their 1st two group matches'? Maybe they thought 1 pt was enough (Maybe they thought d result of d last friendly they won 9-0 will be added to dat one point)

RIO is another opportunity to get things right. I hope we get an easier group.

I hope we get a better coach.

Better preparation with grade A friendlies.

at least theres something to cheer:

Nkwocha become Nigeria’s first woman ‘Centurion’ (100 caps) when she came in for Oparanozie against Australia, in a surprise 2-0 defeat, she also became the oldest player in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, at 39 years and 19 days. The previous older of the record, Meg of Brazil, was 39 years 18 days when she featured at the 1995 finals in Sweden

On point. I hope the NFF fire Okon, and appoint either Peter Dedevbo and/or Ann Chiejine to lead the team through the Olympic qualifiers, the All Africa Games, and hopefully, the Olympics.

and u call this breaking record? while some will lift this world cup trophy at age 20 even less, that's what I call setting and breaking record.

For those of you that still want to use this avenue to bring to live the heart campaign on GMB a.k.a The People's General, I advise you to just have a rethink. When the Super Falcons won the African Women's Championship, the then President promised to give them a Presidential welcome but failed to do so. Our star studded team had a very poor preparation to this tournament. Was it GMB that refused to release funds for better preparations? I believe the bad results we are having is just an evidence of the corruption that the past government sowed. I congratulate our girls for giving a good account of themselves despite their inability to qualify to the next round. No body seems to be concerned about our poor preparation before this world cup started. Every body just feel so comfortable shifting the blame to the coach. Its high time NFF start arranging grade A friendlies for our girls to make them become world beaters. If turf matches had been organised for our girls before this tournament, I don't our girls would be coming home so soon. Am not defending the coach pls.

Perpetual Nkwocha should be over20 years older than the youngest member of the our team too (eg Dike).

A mother of 4 kids? Wow, dat's huge. And she's still got a decent stature?

Imagine what our very own mama Perpetual Nkwocha will look like after 3 kids. But I know mama should be around 45 now, so deep down, she knows she still owns d record. grin
