Did Jesus abolish the Law or not?

Matthew 5:17 and Ephesians 2:14-15

No:

"Think not that I am come to destroy the Law or the prophets; I did not come to destroy, but to fulfil" (Matthew 5:17).

Yes:

"For He is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the Law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace" (Ephesians 2:14-15).

After his creation, Adam received Life not Laws. When the Last Adam came, He did not set aside the Laws given by God but fulfilled it and met its righteous demands that through faith in Him they that believe in Him will receive His Life by the operation of the Law of the Spirit of Life, and have the righteous demands of the law fulfilled through them too (while they walk in the Spirit)

The Law has been fulfilled, Life has been restored, the Veil has been rent, the way into the Holy of Holies is now open. We do not need the shadows and the types anymore; the Substance is come. We have direct access to God through Christ by the Spirit.

In the context of Matt. 5:17-19, DESTROY means BREAK , not ABOLISH. It is FULFIL that means ABOLISH. First he said he did not come to destroy , but to fulfil the Law, and until such fulfilment is done, not one jot or title shall pass from the Law. Until such fulfilment is done, no one should break (destroy) or encourage others to break the Law. The question then is: did Jesus fulfil the Law as he said he would? If yes , then the Law stands abolished, and I will go with the writers Rom. 10:4; Gal. 3:19, 23-25; Heb. 7:11, 12, 18, 19.

How body naw? Long time.

Abeg no start this thing wey you no go fit finish o. We already know your stand as regards issue of Law vs Grace except you don change anyway.... grin grin grin. The only reason why Christians argue so much regarding keeping Law vs living under the Grace of God is we read into scriptures like Matthew 5:17 and interpret blindly after our traditions of men. Other than that, it is clear from scriptures that Christians are not given the Mosaic law in its entirety, including the 10 commandments.

If i gets you right, did you say the laws have been abolish even the ten commandment? thats must be ridiculous.
The first commandment; am the lord your God you must not worship other gods apart from me. And the number 5 of it says thou shall not kill followed by thou shall not comit adultery. so you are saying that all this laws are irrelevant? pls read ur bible again.

That's not what he or we're saying. Romans 7 included the 10 commandments of the law that was abolished. Does that say, we should commit adultery? Absolutely no. We're obeying the law of the Spirit, not the mosaic...if we walk IN THE SPIRIT, we shall not fulfill the last of the flesh.

Olaas baba!!! my sunday school teacher grin

make i put interesting twist for this kweshion and then run to romance or politics section

TWIST 1
If using the English version of the bible
Jesus said he has not come to destroy the law or the prophets.
He didn't say "I am not going to destroy the law"
.....Context is everything

Its like this
Imagine Buhari says "My goal for coming to power is not for the prosecution of GEJ, Obasanjo and IBB "
"I have only come to cleanse Nigeria of corruption both past and present"

...Do we get it? someone say uhn uhn

TWIST 2
I recently realised (or gleaned) that if a British person runs to Syria to kill someone and runs back
the British government will not charge him for murder, whereas, the Syrian government will surely hang him if they catch him
Juxtaposing this,
the Law, even if it is still standing like Iroko, is only applicable to people under its jurisdiction

..but someone might scream, Noooo, its the law of God, so its universal
so I thought, until I noticed new testament writers absolving God of it and instead calling it the law of Moses given by angels shocked

Ok, but are you not an israelite anymore? someone might ask
Nope, I always remembered being a Nigerian
and besides, the law was only applicable after Moses instituted it, In order words, no Israelite before Moses generation was under the law
As a christian I might argue that I am of Abraham, but definetly not of Jacob, so my lineage is not within the confines of the law whether by grace or hard Nigerian flesh

TWIST 3
A comb is mean to straighten your hair
the emphasis is not on the comb, but on the hair

The comb might be made of exquisite imperishable material ...no problem, but its a comb
the power of the comb is only because you use it on your hair

You can decide that you want a new comb, or that want to start having skin cut
you are not bound to the comb

...he who the son of man as set free, is free indeed

The law has been abolished, including the ten commandment.
Jesus said so, Apostle Paul said so.

All the laws hanged on the love of God and love of Neighbor.

let's start with this:

Matt 22:37-40.

He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovaha your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’s 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 The second, like it, is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets".

John 13:34,35

I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you,e you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are my disciples—if you have love among yourselves„.

So, if Christ gave his followers a new commandment that all the laws hanged, it tells a lot what happend to the laws that hanged on this current two.

I will give more evidence as time permits me.

Example 2. showing that the Ten commandment has been abolished inclusive:

Please, read the below scriptures carefully.

Romans 7:6,7

But now we have been released from the Law, because we have died to that which restrained us, in order that we might be slaves in a new sense by the spirit and not in the old sense by the written code.
7 What, then, are we to say? Is the Law sin? Certainly not! Really, I would not have come to know sin had it not been for the Law. For example, I would not have known covetousness if the Law had not said: “You must not covet".

please, still cool down a while.

did you notice Apostle Paul argument for the usefulness of the law that we have been set free from ?

He said: "I would not have come to know covetousness if not for the law".

So, according to Paul, the ten commandment was not a sin since the law taught him what covetousness was.

Now, from his comment, we can deduce which laws he was referring to. was it the ten commandment that he was talking about that we have been released from ? certainly yes. because, his example of the goodness of this law that we have been released from is one of the ten commandment, since the law, "thou shall not covet" is the number ten of the ten commandment.

Hence, the ten commandment is affected.

So, he said that this law that we have been released from includes the ten commandment since he used it as an example of the law we have been freed from.
Re: Did Jesus Destroy The Law Or Not? by truthislight: 6:25pm On Jun 20, 2015
Number 3 Example showing the ten commandment was also abolished:

Also, again, read with patience.

Romans 3:7-11

"Now if the code that administers death and that was engraved in letters on stones came with such glory that the sons of Israel could not gaze at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, a glory that was to be done away with, 8 why should the administering of the spirit not be with even greater glory? 9 For if the code administering condemnation was glorious, o how much more glorious would be the administering of righteousness! 10 In fact, even what had once been made glorious has been stripped of glory because of the glory that excels it. 11 For if what was to be done away with was brought in with glory, how much greater would be the glory of what remains!"

Please, take note of the above references.

What came in layers of stones or tablet of stones ?

Which glory is there talking about ?

what happened then ?

Does the above scripture has anything to do with the ten commandment being abolished ?

Was the ten commandments not given in tablets of stones ?

Well then, let the word of God answer:

Exodus 34:1. 28-30

1."Then Jehovah said to Moses: “Carve out for yourself two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that appeared on the first tablets,b which you shattered".

28-30:

"And he remained there with Jehovah 40 days and 40 nights. He ate no bread and drank no water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
29 Moses then came down from Mount Siʹnai, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand, When he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face was emitting rays because he had been speaking with God. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, they noticed that the skin of his face emitted rays and they were afraid to go near him".

So, from the above scripture, it is clearly evident that the commandment that apostle Paul said has been done away with is the ten commandment.

Clearly, the scriptures shows the law has been abolished and that we are not under law, including the ten commandments.

However, Followers of Christ are to love Yahweh and their Neighbors> keep the law of the Christ. Two of those. in those two, the whole laws stands fulfilled.

Peace.

The Law is not abolished, but it's written in our heart. That's why wen u break one of them, ur heart condemns u immediately. U are judged instantly and u realize u have sinned. This is what happens to every man no matter how hard u may be. The law itself is ur ability to tell good from bad, love from hate, like from dislike etc.
The law is inside of u, it's never abolished.

Yeah! that means the gentiles have the law all along and the Jews, Abraham had the "law" before moses.

I Dont really think you quite get what and on the context we are discussing.

The bible says the law was given to moses from God. that does not mean humans had no conscience before then.

Even the new law of God that is to be written in the heart of men is different from the law of moses.

I understand quite alright.
The law has always been from the creation of man.
Rmb when God told Adam "...but of that tree in the middle of the Garden, thou shall not eat, for if thou eat, thou shall surely die". Now that's a law.
When Adam and Eve eventually ate d fruit, their eyes became open n they new for d first tym dat dey were naked. And dey knew good and evil, and dey realized dey hv sinned.
Man's conscience have always judged their every activity.
When Cain killed Abel, he knew he had done evil. He ran away, his heart condemned him.

Now every organization have rules and regulations that guides her people.
The Israelite have forgotten God,dey were born in Egypt n only knows d Egyptian god. Moses led them out, but they needed a guide on how best to serve the God of their forefathers, dats why God gave them d ten commandments.
At a point they rejected d ten commandments which promote love among brethren, then God in anger commanded Moses to write his own law which is d law of ordinance ie do me I do u law.

Now when Jesus came, He simply preached love, forgiveness, grace. He sensed d pple misunderstood Him, dats y He quickly clarified dat till heaven and earth pass away the law shall not pass until it is fulfilled.

Now the question is when is the law fulfilled?
Simple, when a man dies, he faces judgement. He will be judged by the same law. If found guilty, he shall b condemn for eternity n vise versa. At dis point the law has been fulfilled.

If ur a Christian, u ll understand all I've written even without bible quotations. Dnt hv tym to start digging now. But if need b I ll do dat later to back dis up.
