Senegal Gets Rid Of Its Senate To Save Money by Nobody: 7:54am On Jun 19, 2015
Senegalese lawmakers, who are divided between a 150-seat National Assembly and a 100-seat Senate, voted to do away with the Senate, passing a law, which dissolves the institution in order to save an estimated $15 million.

Minister of Justice Aminata Toure explained that the suppression on Tuesday of the Senate is intended to curb government spending, and would provide the cash needed to help the victims of the yearly rains, which have left thousands homeless and killed at least 13 people.

Unlike the National Assembly, the senate is a relatively recent institution, and has become a symbol of government waste.

It’s been frequently pilloried and described as an instrument of cronyism, a way to reward loyal party workers who did not get elected to the larger National Assembly. Around half the senators are directly appointed by the president.

Congress also voted to abolish the Office of the Vice-President, established in 2009 by then President Abdoulaye Wade, the BBC reports. It has never been occupied.

Too many selfish interests will stand in the way of implementing this in Nigeria. In this matter you will find that all parties including the APC and PDP will unite in fighting against it.

Re: Senegal Gets Rid Of Its Senate To Save Money by lokito: 8:03am On Jun 19, 2015
The problem with the Nigerian counterpart is cumbersome. Based on numerical statistics, 109 senators have at least 1 PA and 1 SA. The PAs and SAs have at least 1 PA each.

Thus, 109 + 436 = 545. Meaning that, at least 545 strong men squanders this money in the senate.
Yet we don't have working refineries; Ajaokuta Steel industry is redundant etc.

Case in point the wardrobe allowance.

They would rather a war break out than lose their labourless largesse..

These lawmakers will hire mercenaries from anywhere they can get them if pushed!!!

I think nigeria should tow this line of action. This would surely go well with the Nigerian people, who would see politicians as less greedy persons who are dedicated to the resuscitation of the Nigerian economy against the back drop of plethora of problems ( fall in international crude oil prices, financial leakages in government spending and revenue generation at both federal, state and local government teirs)

Senate is an integral part of democracy so I suggest a drastic pay cut. For them.. they should earn nothing more than a directorship level in the federal ministries !
It is a call to serve and not a call to loot!

Hahahahaha. Extreme measures! If you try this in Nigeria, they ll say you want to weaken the north, decimate the igbos or cheat the yoruba people.

On the altar of ethnicity, all common sense shall bow

Bros i understand you buh you see, it is not about the crowd of over 170 million protesters it Also involves MINDSET.

when the protesters are hungry and the 500 has MONEY AND FOOD, the united MINORITY (500) will still overpower the DIVIDED majority (over 170million protesters)

good point raised above, but I believe it should be scrapped because its a duplication of function. 360 members at the lower chamber is as good enough represenatative we need. 109 members at the upper chamber ahhh a waste of resources.
Remember the oronsaye report on rationalisation of federal government MDAs. We need to cut cost of running government in Nigeria. Government provides money for constituency projects for all federal law makers yet we still have large infrastructural deficit at the three teirs of government.

I would prefer the House of Representatives be scrapped while retaining the Senate which is just 109 members as against the larger number in the House of Representatives. Each Senator represents one-third of a State in the National Assembly and that is representative enough. While Local governments representative should be for the State Houses of Assembly.

Why do we have bicameral parliament? a monumental waste of resources.

Let us go back to Regional Governments with the House of Reps being the Regional Parliament of each region and Senate at Federal level alone.
