its being reported that alshabaab may have overrun a AMISON base, death toll more than 30

At least 30 people have been killed after gunmen attacked an African Union military base in southern Somalia, witnesses say.
A suicide car bomber drove into the main gates of the base in Leego, along the main road connecting the capital, Mogadishu and the city of Baidoa.
The militant Islamist group al-Shabab says its fighters have taken control of the base but this is not confirmed.
Al-Shabab is battling Somalia's government for control of the country.
The base is manned by Burundian soldiers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), which has more than 20,000 troops in the country.

Islamist militant group al-Shabab killed more than 70 African Union soldiers and seized control of their peacekeeping base in southern Somalia early Friday.

Witnesses say attackers rammed a car filled with explosives into the main gate of the base in the town of Leego, about 130 kilometers south of the capital Mogadishu, then opened fire on troops.

The AMISOM contingent stationed at the base came mostly from Burundi, and Somali officials tell VOA more than 70 Burundian troops were killed in the early morning assault.

Another 20 Burundian soldiers and 40 Somali civilians are missing, and there are fears they have been kidnapped.

i have seen alshabaab attacks supported with landcruiser technicals mounted with ZU-23-2,ZPU-4 anti-aircraft gun,dSHk and even a truck mounted with dual 30mm anti-aircraft .now imagined being told to face such an attack composed of even suicide bombers and an enemy that out number you.

It is a Training exercise. Bulletproof vests would be worn just under the webbing.

It's to far and to expensive, if the UN payed for our Gripens like they payed for our Rooivalk in the DRC then we might have done so.

looks like a CAPDAT derivative

Also, Valcro is a bad idea

Is this the end of the line for Velcro? According to USA Today, the US army has decided to ditch that once most fashionable and space-age of fasteners from the pockets of trousers issued to soldiers in Afghanistan, and replace it with the humble button. The Velcro fasteners have, apparently, been failing to cope with bulging pockets – as well as collecting dirt and sand and even, with that unmistakable, fingers-on-blackboard ripping sound, betraying soldiers' positions to the enemy. US sergeant Kenny Hatten wrote on an army website, "Buttons are silent, work just fine in the mud, do not clog up with dirt and do not fray and disintegrate with repeated laundering."

No, we do not. What we need are Helicopters (attack & Transport), multi-role fighter jets and adequate Armour.

How is a single asset or two of C27J Gunships going to turn the tide against terrorist groups?

.......but why is this so difficult to achieve?

I see western troops carrying proper plate carrier/webbing combo. It seems like the only logical thing to do.

if you only knew,i was just watch one of their propaganda video which included a couple of seen's I.E.D's attacks.it left me wondering how many PUMA MRAP's we still have left even thou i just saw only 1 completely burned which alshabaab were assessing.the media will never tell you every thing ,what AMISON is going through is no different with what the americans were experiencing in afganistan in form of attacks.they are dealing with a determined and capable foe. even worse they dont have AIRMEDIVAC,Airsupport e.t.c excerpt for us kenyan's those MD500's are god sent, just imagine if they had FLIR pod's

you made me smile, dont get me wrong.let me just tell you what i know, during america involvement in afganistan the most feared aircraft by taliban was the AC 130 GUNSHIP,they said fast jets could just buzz away but a AC 130 could loiter around until it killed every one of you.during the vietnam war where its inception start where it used to carry out it missions on the ho chi minh trail.north vietnam used to chain their drivers driving trucks on the steering,so that they can't escape when they saw it

they have the range, weapon load, endurance, efficiency e.t.c than any aircraft i know when it comes to counter insugency

Very true some thing like that is very hard to defend against, that's why I believe that heavily armoured Personnel Carriers and IFVs are needed against insurgents.

Use the turret to take out the Technicals and those AA Guns or they can be used to provide sufficient cover for ground soldiers while they take out enemy troops.

If my memory recalls correctly, I think the AH-64D is the CAS of choice of all NATO forces, followed by the A-10.

How many AORs can a C-27J cover, how many AOs can a single or 2 C-27J Gunships be used in? What's the cost of putting a Single C-27J in an AO when compared to putting 5 Helicopter gunships in a AOR? How is it's maintenance cycle, availability of spares, cost of spares cost of running, and availability of aircraft?

By the time you are done running all possibilities and related cost associated with putting a single C-27J when compared to putting 5 Attack Helos in an AOR, you'll come to the realisation of un-realistic and un-economical it is to have a C-27J.

its has better speed performance ,it can aerial refuel and isn't fuel thirsty like those gunships thus can loiter in a given area for a long time

dont forget IED's even an anti-tank mine will completely destroy a technical.somali army has suffer alot due to the vulnerability of technicals
