Hello friends, please is it better to send CVs in
Pdf or word format when applying for jobs
online. Please which is better out the 2 formats? I
need urgent reply. Thanks for your response

Word format any day. Most Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) prefer this format as well as recruiters.

Big companies will often have a human resource (HR) department working for them with their own systems in place. They may be using an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), which can screen, sort, and handle all the resume data being submitted. Usually these work with databases that are key-word searchable, which might not take to the PDF format too easily.

So if you’ve sent in a PDF, “this means the chance of your resume being seen has been lost,” Toni Bowers of the Career Management blog pointed out in a post. “Newer applicant tracking systems are doing a much better job at reading PDF conversions, but you have no way of knowing if the company you’re applying to is using a new version.”

That being said, an MS Word document may be called for when dealing with bigger companies. Yet note that with smaller companies the situation may be different. It’s more than likely that resumes for small- to medium-sized businesses will be screened and reviewed by humans. In those cases, sending a PDF resume can be a safe bet.


The main issue is that word documents most times loses it's formatting , but that never happens with pdf....

I think Pdf is better as it keeps the format when opened by anyone anywhere unlike word which might change format or wrongly aligned when opened on another version of word which differs from the original one.

Offcourse I know what the question was, and what I put up there should narrow his decision... They both have their importance and one just can't be written off. I know ATS prefers word documents but newer models of ATS also supports PDF.... A friend of mine forwarded her cv to me for review and it came with a very bad format, I could hardly even comprehend something's in the cv. Imagine that cv being sent to recruiters, there would definitely be no reply. This won't happen with a pdf formatted cv....

My point now is if you are sure and very comfortable your Ms word formatted cv won't be scattered when sent to recruiters, go ahead with it, else use a more reliable pdf cv, better still , send your cv twice, one with pdf the other with doc.

thats it...pdf is the best...it take thesame format when opened by any device....

Word Format is Good

pdf is better so no one can ALTER it for any reason or agenda they may have.

Word format seems better because many HR use Applicant Tracking System to search for key words and may not have the new PDF version. But PDF is more secure to avoid alterations and keeps the formatting intact.
So word is better except if stated that other formats can be used such as PDF.
