if f(y-4)=y²+2y+3, then find f(2)
y - 4 = 2,
y = 6,
then, f(2) = 6² + 2(6) + 3,
= 36 + 12 + 3,
= 51
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Nobody: 3:28pm On Jul 01, 2015
dejt4u:
y - 4 = 2, y = 6, then, f(2) = 6² + 2(6) + 3, = 36 + 6+ 3, = 45
you made a little mistake. 2(6)= 12

let a function f be defined by x^2-2x-3/x^2+2x+3 hence :determine the domain of f(x) , find the range of f(x) , find an expression for f(3x+1) and hence determine f(4)

Modified:
Domain is.....All real numbers Except ( - 1+i/2*sqrt 8 ) and ( - 1-i/2*sqrt8). The first (-i) entries in the solution is a mistake. Meant to write - 1.

A woman is four times old as her daughter. In four years time she will be three(3) times old as her daughter. What are their ages?

Let the woman's age be w and that of the daughter is d

equation1; w = 4d
equation 2; w+4 = 3(d+4),

putting eqn 1 in eqn 2,
4d+4=3(d+4),
4d+4=3d+12,
d=8

since w=4d,
w=32

the woman is 32years old and the daughter is 8years old..

Please help the first term of arithmetic progression is 3 and d fifth term is 9 calculate d number of term if d sum is 8
given a= 3 , a+4d=9

=> 3+4d=9

=>4d=6
d=6/4=3/2

now the series goes thus

first term. , a=3
second term, a+d=> 3 +3/2 =(6+3)/2 = 9/2
third term , a+2d , => 3 +2(3/2) = 3+3=6
fourth term , a+3d , =>3+3(3/2) =(6+9)/2 = 15/2
firth term , a+4d , => 3+4(3/2) =3+6 =9

Now.

though my boss above have done Justice so far.

but re-check the question from " if the sum is 8"

are you sure its 8?

the proofs are quite cheep sha , but kinda long (though I could summarize.)

Simpsons rule gives a better approximation over trapezoidal

we use S-1/3 ...for ....Even n

we use. S-3/8 . for n being multiple of 3

( n= data point )

we use trapezoidal rule for close step size

but they're cases where n is neither even nor multiple of 3 ( I.e prime n ) , for such case , we combine S -1/3 & S-3/8

(step size , s= (x-x0)/h

here

S-1/3. => h/3[ £wf*f(x)]

S-3/8 => 3h/8[£wt*f(x)]

T.R= h/2 [£wt.*f(x)]

£= sigma notation for summation

where h= interval ; wt.= wight factor ( for S-1/3 => 1 4 2 4 2 4 2 . . .1 ,

for S-3/8 => 1 3 3 2 3 3 2. . .1,

for T.R..=> 1 2 2 2 2 . . .1 )

f(x)= given function .

guess that's it.
