10. Life jackets were one of the leading causes of death on the Titanic. If a person jumped overboard from 10 feet up or higher, their necks would be broken upon impact with the water. (They may have been the lucky ones). This life jacket was cut from a body after being in the ocean for many days. Recovery workers did not want to touch the bodies, so the life jackets were removed by cutting the straps. The bodies were then weighted and the unidentifiable were returned to the sea.

15, 1912.

18. "Rigel" A Big Black Newfoundland Dog belonging to first officer Murdoch saved the passengers in life boat 4. They were Drifting In front of the "Carpathia", too weak to call out. The dog had swam in the icy water for three hours, probably looking for his master . He was swimming in front of the lifeboat and alerted the "Carpathia" crew by barking. The lifeboat might not have been rescued if not for the sharp barking of rigel.

There were survivors and more people would have survived if the launched lifeboats were filled to the capacity.

20. Sailor David Blair forgot to leave a key as the Titanic set off on its maiden voyage. His shipmates were unable to open a locker containing the binoculars that were to lookout. Lookout Fred Fleet, who survived the disaster later told an official inquiry that if they had binoculars,
they would have seen the iceberg sooner.
