Gud afternoon fellow nairalanders. Occasioned by the dwindling oil revenues many states can't pay salaries, many companies are reducing their staff strength so as 2 enable them pay their workers, as a result many men(lucky 2 have bn married b4 the financial crisis) can't provide the basic needs 4 their families again. With the ongoing constitutional amendment by the 7th NASS(to be continued by the 8th NASS) I was opportuned 2 be given the task 2 knw what pple think on 'the payment of bride price' as a prerequisite 2 marrying a wife. Should bride price & other ceremonial activities be retained or scrapped? The arguement 4 scrapping is that it would enable young men of marriageable age 2 be able 2 take a wife thereby reducing the level of sexual immoralities, while the arguement 4 retaining is that it would enrich the families(xpecially the fathers) & also give the women some values in the eyes of their husbands & their ppl. What is ur take wit reasons pls? I have limited time 2 submit my findings. |

If bride price is scrapped, den d whole traditional marriage will be scrapped also.. D bride price payment is d main traditional marriage itself.. Or rather, the nucleus of the traditional marriage, without it, there is no traditional marriage |

It should be retained, otherwise men won't give the female folks their respect and dignity. They will render them valueless . |

You haven't given any good reason as to why it should be scrapped. If a young man cannot afford to pay bride price, how would he be able to provide for the family he wants to raise? The only reasonable objection might be that it reduces femalefolk to the status of mere commodity to be bought and sold, but then, isn't it common knowledge that EVERYONE has a price? |

Bride price is not actually the problem here. Bride price in most tribes is cheap and affordable. What shd be scrapped if anything is to be scrapped is the marriage ceremony cuz that's what actually consume all the money. One of d reasons i'v not married yet, all my far and near relations are patiently waiting for my marriage ceremony. At the last calculation, i'l need close to a million naira for the ceremony that befits my status both in the family and in the environment. am willing to pay the bride price if there's any girl who's willing to forgo the ceremony. |
