Solomon111 please I beg you to allow Richiez to address the problems as they come.Especially as he was the one that opened the thread.
I have read your solutions and will not want to be an umpire here, but for you to call a subset of mathematics the real mathematicians makes me to wonder.
If you dread statistics,which is basically inference,probability,stochastic methods(probabilistic),quality control,operations research,non-parametric methods,decision theory, will you then be confident with serious analysis? Real analysis,topological spaces,math methods,ord and partial diff equations,linear and abstract algebra,set theory/logic,numerical analysis & optimization theory,measure theory(lebesgue measure & integration),metric spaces,elasticity,complex variables,vector and tensor analysis,etc.
You must be exceptional to find all those cheaper than statistics.
where I'm from, we pure and applied mathematicians run away from statistics.... We'd rather take computer courses if it were an elective course.... we often say... "statistics be like maths.. But no be maths"....

Hello Generals.

Please help me solve this:

A committee of five is to be chosen from five men and four women. How many different committees can be formed if
(a) anyone can be chosen?
(b) the number of men on the commitee is to be greater than number of women?

a. 9C5 = 126

b. If the number of men on the commitee is to be greater than number of women; the arrangement will be either 3men, 2women OR 4men, 1woman..
(5C3 x 4C2) + (5C4 x 4C1)
= 80

Depending on whether there must be at least a woman on the committee, we could also have a computation of 5C5(all men)=1, making the total =80+1=81ways.......
I think u ar right.. Thanks

This computation is invalid for the stated parameters in the question. "No. Of Men must be GREATER THAN the number of women"
With my Tin-tini knowledge of maths, I believe "greater than" is used to compare two quantities or values. In other words, the committee should have both men and women, but No. Of men must be more than that of women. . . so a computation for all men and no woman, bros e be Somehow for eye, how you see am? ;d

You make a cogent point....that's why I said it depends on the specifics of the question....I was thinking from the view point of part (a) of the question which asked for the number of ways if anyone could be chosen

Oh okay, I dig.
Buh I think questions (b) is on its own, since no reference was made to question (a)

Hello math generals in the house, we'll be needing your assistance with the 3rd edition of NMQC. fasten your seat belts, those who good reputation on this thread will be prefered. To this end, we ask all members of the house to nominate those who they believe would hand the task of a quiz master very well.

He has to be right. In maths, you don't think it half of the way. You must think it through. If there were no women in the committee, the number of men will still be greater than the number of women, i.e. 5>0. And that's a valid mathematical statement, except of course the question introduced the condition that "there must be at least 1 woman".

If 263 + 441 = 714, what number base has been used
If you had to do this fast, you can easily know from 6+4=11. Only base 9 yields that result
3+1=4 already tells you that the base is > 4
