ata Motors Limited has invested over $8 million US dollars as part of its preparations to roll out its first batch of Nigerian assembled cars and the subsequent exportation of automobiles to other parts of Africa.

This disclosure was made by the company’s Regional Manager Kshitij Verma during a meeting between the company and the management of National Automotive Council (NAC) in Abuja.

According to Kshitij the target of the company was not just to start assembling of automobiles in Nigeria but also to establish a sub-regional Centre here where vehicles will be manufactured for exportation.

He said already the company has employed over 240 Nigerians many of whom are currently undergoing training in India, adding that they have already installed a factory, which is sited on a large expanse of land measuring about 130 hectares at Ijebu Ode.

In his speech, Director General, NAC, Aminu Jalal disclosed that the coming of TATA and other foreign Auto companies is an expression of the confidence of global investors in the potentials of Nigeria’s Auto industry.

Jalal expressed worry that the demand of whole sale vehicle import in trillions of naira annually is not sustainable; adding that Automotive demand in foreign exchange is the second largest on Nigeria’s reserves and that there is an urgent need to reduce it.

The DG stated that “unlike in the previous attempts in automotive development in Nigeria which was undermined by badly managed trade liberalization policy, the present attempt is characterised by the involvement of local entrepreneurs with experience in the motor industries.”

He promised that “NAC has the competence to ensure that Nigeria is not short-changed in this strategy to diversify the Nigerian economy adding that sustenance of the automotive industry is critical in this regard.”
“We would invest more than $8 million into TATA’s business, as we came to the country to brief the authorities on our progress concerning the assembly plant. Also we would make use of some local materials like paints but will guide producers to meet up our standard ,” he said

Shelter Afrique partners Ogun housing corporation on N2bn housing units

Shelter Afrique, a Pan-African Finance institution has partnered Ogun State Housing Corporation (OGSHC) to support the construction of housing units for hundreds of Ogun State’s civil and public servants with N2 billion.

Shelter Afrique, which finances affordable housing for Africa, collaborates with Ogun State Housing Corporation (OGSHC) on the provision of low-cost housing scheme for civil and public servants who are contributors to the National Housing Scheme, BusinessDay reports.

Speaking at an official meeting held in Abeokuta with Jumoke Akinwunmi, general manager, Ogun State Housing Corporation, Oumar Diop, resident regional representative of Shelter Afrique, said that Shelter Afrique was willing and committed to making available the sum of N2 billion for the construction of housing units to be located at Kemta, Idi-Aba in Abeokuta.

Diop noted that the low-cost housing units were to be provided for workers who had not benefited from the previous housing schemes in the state, adding that the project would avail workers the opportunity to have their own houses since the project was meant to promote home building and ownership and, in return, boost workers’ productivity.

Responding, Akinwunmi appreciated Shelter Afrique for the partnership on housing development in the state, assuring Shelter Afrique of state government’s cooperation on the project.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC) has completed 9.4 kilometres of residential and industrial roads in Agbara Estates aimed at developing industries in the axis; easing haulage of raw-materials and finished goods to and fro scores of manufacturing industries.

Speaking on the construction of roads in the estates, Taiwo Aridegbe, OPIC’s general manager, said that government had constructed 5.8 kilometers industrial graded roads in Area 1 & 5; 3.6 kilometers residential road in Area 4 and graded/opened road in Area 1 & 8.

According to him, the first phase of work focused on the areas densely populated by OPIC allottees, these were area 4 and 1 industrial area and the cost of these roads was primarily borne by government through the corporation, adding that water channelization was equally provided to reduce flooding.

“In addition, efforts to maintain security were enhanced by upgrading the police station which was refurbished and renovated by OPIC in October 2014,” he added.

Aridegbe said the state government, through OPIC, would remain committed to upgrading OPIC Agbara, but regretted that the Federal Government’s outright neglect of the Badagry/ Sokoto Expressway did not complement the efforts of the state government on roads infrastructure.

“The abandonment had resulted to traffic detours through our estate and to mitigate damage caused by these detours, OPIC has opened up Road 411, measuring over 1.6 kilometres, rolled and compacted it with laterite in readiness for completion during the second phase.”

He however, said despite the financial challenges, OPIC would resume work on the second phase in a short while, saying that would cover most of Area 8, the remaining arterial roads, Area 5 and Igbesa axis just as he added that government would commence the reconstruction of access roads soon to relieve the pressure on the recently developed road networks.

Sungbo's Eredo has also been connected with the legend of the Queen of Sheba which is recounted in both the Bible and Koran. In the Old Testament, she is described as having sent a caravan of gold, ivory and other goods from her kingdom to King Solomon. In the Koran she is an Ethiopian sun worshiper named Bilqis involved in the incense trade who converts to Islam. Legends of the contemporary Ijebu clan link the Eredo to this fabled woman, a wealthy, childless widow who they know as Bilikisu Sungbo. According to them, the monument was built as her personal memorial. In addition to this, her grave is believed to be located in Oke-Eiri, a town in a Muslim area just north of the Eredo. Pilgrims of Christian, Muslim and traditional African religions annually trek to this holy site in tribute to her.

Mojisola Dosunmu, director, industrial promotion, Ogun State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has disclosed that seven factories, in addition to about 68 companies that have already opened shops across the state in the last four years, are ready for commissioning.

She spoke against the backdrop of the state government’s commitment to the promotion and development of industrial activities, which have provided economic platforms for the industrial extension services and training of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises. Dosunmu, who revealed that necessary infrastructure had been put in place at the three technical incubation centres across the state, said adequate information on basic raw materials available within the state were being exhibited at the State Raw Material’s Display Centre at Oke-Mosan, State Government Secretariat in Abeokuta, for the benefits of would-be investors.

“Presently, seven factories are ready for commissioning and this will further boost the state economy. I can also tell you that all our efforts have begun to yield great results as the state can boast of 68 companies facilitated by this administration in the last four years,” she said.
Meanwhile, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said that a total of N534 million had been disbursed as loans in collaboration with Bank of Industry (BoI) to about 108 qualified societies in the agricultural, non-agricultural and small-scale businesses across the state.
The governor, who was represented by Modupe Adekunle, state sead of service, at the 2015 International Co-operative Day celebration held recently in Abeokuta, also said government had approved the release of N500,000 as annual subvention for the State Co-operative Federation Limited (OGSCOFED).

While explaining that government took the steps to fight poverty, promote industrialisation and food security, the governor said “this administration embraces co-operative business model as a weapon to fight poverty, promote industrialisation and food security.
“Hence, the partnership of this state with the BoI has provided loans worth N534 million to about 108 qualified societies, both agricultural and non-agricultural productive cooperatives as well as small businesses. Even the N500,000 year 2015 annual subvention has been approved for release to the OGSCOFED Limited.”
