I have 2 questions:

1.I have been wondering and would like to know how it happened that we have such names like; Spiff,Lawson,Jack,Mighty,Clarke,Clinton etc.

2.Why do they have some Igbo sounding names but they are not Igbos.E.g. Amaechi,Ikenna,Nwanne,Chibuike, etc

What happened?

Our early encounter with Europeans made it so. And that's why u we bear such names. My people bear good English names unlike the Igbos who still bear old English names that no longer exist in the white man's dictionary like Romanus, Polycarp, Longinus, Cletus, Calistus etc.
Those names are Latin in origin and as you know Igbos are mainly Catholic.. so its normal we bear them
Am sorry for your people that claim to be more English than the English tongue

Nnaa this Heineken must have come from the beer cheesy

Magnus, Cletus e.t.c are Catholic/Latin baptismal names given to a lot of Igbo catholics, but only as a first or second name. Never as a surname.
Mind you I was told that Celestine Babayaro and Justice Christopher are Igbos. I don't know how reliable this information is, but even if it is accurate, I will be interested to know how they came about their surnames
babayaro is from nkwerre but he went to a training football camp in jos as a boy and the owner of that camp was a man called babayaro..all the people that graduated in that camp took up the babayaro surname..that is what I heard

During the colonial and slave trade eras, most of the slaves merchants did make some part of the Niger-Delta their port of business. Also, the white imperialist brought some part of ND under the Queen's rulership. That was how most people from that part bear such names.

If u look at the north, they have a tradition when it comes to names. There names are mostly ingrained into their religion and the primodial right to land. An Hausa man that has attained certain rank changes his name to the community he hailed from. That's where u hear names like, Jega, Wuruno, Daura, Buratai, Tambuwa etc.

A Yoruba man answers different name becos of the diversity in religion and in their cultural beliefs. So do some parts of Nigeria.

Lokpoibiri is Izon. As for Heineken... Thanks to early contact with the Europeans.
I think everyone should answer their indigenous names. Starting with Mr Heineken lokpoibiri.

Why didn't his parents name him..

Ogogoro Lokpoibiri ?
Kaikai lokpoibiri ?
Burukutu lokpoibiri?

Or can't he get baptised and change his name to Orijin lokpoibiri ?

Exactly. That's why I said earlier that these names ,presently may have nothing to do with the white man but maybe direct translation of local names into English or simply arbitrary choice of whatever appeals to the parents of those folks.

Gentleman Indeed grin grin
