The Oshiomhole/El-Rufai Committee set up by President
Muhammadu Buhari to probe the administration of former
President Goodluck Jonathan is to hire two international
forensic auditors to determine how much the federal
government earned since January 2010 to the end of the
last administration and how the money was spent.
The decision was announced at the inaugural meeting of the
committee in Abuja, Thursday.
Already, some revenue generating agencies have been
invited to brief the committee which will take detailed
briefings from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies,
MDAs of the federal government that deal directly with
revenue.
The focus will be on the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation, NNPC, the Nigeria Customs Service, he Central
bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Extractive Industry
Transparency Initiative, NEITI, among others.

What becomes of the report done by Price Waters . Should it be thrown in the trash can while this new report is hailed as the best thing since the invention of paper. The fact is that this new audit report will be seen by many as Buhari's report and the previous one as Jonathan's report. In fact there will be grounds for challenging the findings of the report in Court, if the affected party is interested. Forensic or no forensic the result of the anti-jonathan campaign will still end in the desert

The procedures we performed did not constitute an examination or a review in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards or attestation standards,” the firm said.

“Accordingly, we provide no opinion, attestation or other form of assurance with respect to our work or the information upon which our work was based,” it added.

The auditors complained of a lack of support from the NNPC. They also complained of not having enough data which was either being withheld by the NNPC staff or was really not available. The fact I am trying to pass across is the issue of trust and sentiments . people will see it as a condemnation report rather than a pragmatic analysis of the accounts of the NNPC within a stipulated time. And also don't forget it was GEJ's idea to audit the accounts so as to promote transparency and clear any doubt of financial impropriety.
