Buhari Should Re-introduce WAI –ex-general by cccxxiii: 3:38am On Aug 09, 2015
A retired general and former director at the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier-General Ayodele Ojo, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-introduce “War Against Indiscipline,” a programme he launched as a military Head of State.

President Buhari, who had earlier ruled the country from 1984 to August 1985, is remembered for the period when there was strict campaign against indiscipline and corruption.

Ojo said this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH.

He said, “There is no better time than now to go after the people who have contributed, through corruption, to the rot in the country. We need to realise that four years is too short to make any meaningful impact in the war against corruption.

“Buhari, therefore, needs to start now. He cannot afford to tarry or delay. I will like to go further by suggesting that the President should re-launch the War Against Indiscipline and corruption, which was aborted in 1985 (when he was overthrown in a military coup).

“During the presidential campaign, President Muhammadu Buhari promised to fight corruption. He once said that if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us. We must therefore not be under any illusion that the war against corruption is going to be easy.

“It is very difficult for me to understand why some Nigerians are being sentimental about the current attempt to fight corruption. I want to plead with Nigerians to support and encourage this administration in its fight against corruption.”

According to him, due to corruption in the polity, Nigerian security forces have become politicised.

“For example, some of the roles they played in the last general elections are questionable. The problem, to me, has to do with the politicians who always attempt to drag the security forces into partisan politics.

“The way out is for the security forces to resist the politicians, remain focussed and apolitical. The politicians must also leave the security forces alone to perform their constitutional roles devoid of external influence,” the former DHQ director added.

During the implementation of WAI, the Buhari-led military regime had ordered Nigerians to form queues at bus stops, under the stern watchful eyes of horsewhip-wielding soldiers. During the period, civil servants were also punished for not being punctual at work, as those who arrived late for work were forced to do frog jumps.

I think it'll be a good innovation

But for WAI to work effectively and to ensure that people don't turn on Buhari

Those Governors who owe salaries and arrears should be helped to pay it all

Made sense then because Idiagbon who was incharge went for every criminal in sight. So we had Nwobodo, Ajasin, Rimi, Lar, Akinloye, Alli etc in prison. Majority of Nigerians were in suppourt because they beleived in the campaign and bought into it. Nobody looked at it as a political/tribal or religious witch-hunt. Moreover, Idiagbon was ruthlessly unwavering in his pursuit of criminals who stole government funds or messed up the land. . . Fast-forwsard to this day, what do we have? A buhari swearing he won't probe Mr A and Mr B, nomatter how corrupt they are but will probe Mr C and Mr D simply because the later look weak and vulnerable. A buhari that will gleefully dine with Tinubu and Danjuma while castigating Jonathan and gang. . Tunde Idiagbon must be spinning in his grave. .

Nice suggestion if the law is properly invoked to protect human right and military/police excesses.

Good question. Reminds you of the "no movement" order every last sartuday of the month. Yet some government departments are paid for refuse collection. .

Hope you understood the scale of the WAI?

Does change means flogging people on the street, the military are already manhandling civilians not to talk of when you give the full order officially, hope you wont come back here to cry.

In sane countries, there are recycle bins on every street and each is just few mins away from the other, the department incharge of taking of the wastes are also doing their job.

Nigerians are not mumu, provide same facility in Nigeria and nobody will drop dirty along the road.

What happened to all the waste bin/even public toilets(lagos as xample)?Despite public toilet in place like oshodi, pipu prefered to release their human waste around the bush than paying a token to use the rest room.it is indiscipline to see pipu sit on top of moving train(abi u don see such in UK/US too?).U over speed in US/drink driving,U'll pay(nor bi so?)

Truth is,it cannot be successfully implemented. If such a bill is ever proposed,i don't think it would scale the first reading in the National Assembly.
